About Me, About PhotoPoems

i’ve been painting and taking photographs, off and on, since the late 60s, early 70s; and writing since the late 70s

music, dance, words, and images – plus the arts in general, have been lifelong interests of mine

photopoems, have become an opportunity, in the digital age, of more completely merging, complimenting, two of those interests, prose-verse and images

they offer a unique entry of choice, where either the words or the picture, can be what holds meaning for the reader/observer -

or where a merging and feedback between the two might occur…

it is my hope i accomplish the latter ;-)

dVerse Poets Pub Prompt : Patterns Pictures and Poems

hosted by james rainsford

combining words and images, two of my most enduring art loves (two others being dance and music) is one of my favorite creative outlets

james, from the uk, and an elder it appears (from his site) presents just what i needed, an excuse uh, opportunity ;-) to 1) do a photopoem, and 2) use an image i really like, but was probably not gonna use in any of my upcoming photopoem books

i’ve link-marked “photopoem books” for those reading, as a heads up that my newest photopoem book from my “everyday inspirations” is free starting tomorrow, mon-fri, march 26-30, for five days ;-) sneaky huh? ;-)

anyway, james’ intro essay into dversepoets’ prompt, is really interesting

plus, he is a photographer himself

what’s interesting to me, and kinda substantiates what i’ve felt about much of the arts for a long time, is there’s many ways to approach an art, and still “get it right” – since the thing to get right is getting in touch with one self’s own creative mode

james himself likes to create a poem, then search for an image he can capture or use to compliment it :

“I don’t work to a set pattern to create a poem or photo. Mostly the poem comes first, and then I either select an image from my photo library, or occasionally venture out with my camera to try and capture a relevant moment.”

while i like to identify an image, tinker with it to my liking, then let it prompt me for the right words for that moment in me

either works, or both alternately ;-)

like james, i don’t think there’s a set pattern

the patterns are in us, are organic, and like the templates that i think yoga poses are, alter and adjust day to day, as we do, as the poem the image the pose and ourselves, are one piece

a google search continues to bring up interesting ideas about photopoems

here then is my own image and verse

i should add that james does supply some fabulous images that a poet is welcome to use if they don’t have or want to use one of their own

the setting for my image is the waterfront park area in burlington, along lake champlain vermont

thanks ya’ll ;-)

dVersepoets Prompt – Open Link Night ~ Week 36

hosted by Claudia Schoenfeld

one of the founders of dversepoets, with brian miller, claudia welcomes us to open link night with a prose-poem of a welcome-prompt :

“I let you in on a little secret.. my fav OLN times are when the doors just open and you have to be careful not to get run over, when poets with ink-smeared hands and sheets of paper wrapped around them spill into the door, try to find a chair, hug, chatter and laugh,  say hello to old friends, welcome newcomers and order their first poetic pint…ahhhh…what a pleasure….”

reading the rest is alone worth the visit to this fine poetry site -

and who knows, you may catch the madness of words that mean more than meant, that flip readers minds into visions within themselves, that conjure up feelings felt once, and now remembered twice…

like sports, you can always come back and try again ;-)

obviously, i am taking poetic license, when i say only our own choice can stop us, i don’t mean we could still return to ice skating or other demanding activity, in the same way or right away, if we broke our leg or suffered a stroke

what i do mean though, is we can choose to return if physically able

or we can return to a level of activity within what we are able

if we choose to, because we can choose to do so

should we?

well, for me, that begins to be the inner realm of individual preferences

there are as many sports as people can come up with

even playing with words or images is sport-like

and yoga?

again, for me

there’s a reason, in yoga, it’s called,

dVersepoets Prompt – Meeting the Bar: Filling in the Gaps

hosted by charles miller

my originating poem for this poem, is “march madness” written a few days ago

charles posits that (my bolding),

“More modern poets make up for this disjunction between life and poetry by filling their poems with more and more personal, historical, social, or other details. Many poems try to fill in the gaps left by the disjunction between the moment of poetry and real life by providing enough detail to let you know what gave rise to the poem. No doubt, we aren’t talking about causal events like a chemical producing a reaction but cause defined in terms of meaning, not always directly discernible by observers or instruments.”

he gives examples of “more” meaning using work from ts eliot and dante

of the latter, he says,

“You’ll notice that I haven’t used the term commentary for what Dante does in this work. This is because I don’t think he’s doing literary criticism or dissecting his work like a literary critic does. Instead, he’s trying to show us how all the pieces fit together….”

the prompt intro is a richly written piece of interest to most any poet, and the prompt itself is challenging yet intriguing

this then, is my poem about my previous poem about sports and team work and individualism, why i relished celebrating all that is something that’s sometimes thought of as “just playing sports” ;-)

dVersepoets Prompt – Open Link Night ~ Week 35

hosted by brian miller

one of the founders of dversepoets, with claudia schoenfeld, brian says this about open link night,

“Welcome to OpenLinkNight!

“What’s that?

“Great question, and if you are just stumbling upon us you are in for a treat. Not because of anything we do but because of you. OpenLinkNight is the poets willing to lay their hearts to the pen, the wind that blows through the doors every week at 3 pm EST and whips into a whirlwind of verse for 33 hours.”

this is, from my experience, a great place to try out your verses, in a community of other poets whose intent is to support, critique, and be respectful – the latter something not always easy to be found ;-)

brian goes on to add,

“OpenLinkNight is all about you. It is about the poets that make this a special place by talking back in the comments, by visiting each other. By interacting.

Interaction is where the magic happens….”

this is often, i’ve found, an active diverse creative group that’s gonna look at your work; i encourage you to give them a try, it’s free ;-)

below is my creative effort of the day for the open link prompt

sports is on my mind, in a large work of poems i recently posted, “101 sports poems,” in a newer sports work in-progress, in the opening of baseball season, the upcoming olympics this summer, and so much more

starting now, of course, is the college playoff mania that stretches to early april

so with that in mind ;-) i give you, my march madness ;-)

my collection of sports poems “101 Sports Poems” is being featured by “the indie spotlight” whose motto is :

The Indie Spotlight – Where the Independent Author Shines

indie spotlight 125x125

what the indie spotlight offers, is a chance to have one’s independent self-published work more widely presented, especially to the growing number of people with ereaders, such as the kindle and nook among others

101 Sports Poems - The Poems

a variety of in-depth questions were presented to help the reader know the writer and the work presented a bit better

with baseball season upon us, “101 sports poems” seems the right pitch to make ;-)

indie spotlight’s submission page provides a downloadable questionnaire, and that can be submitted to one of the founders, gregory bernard banks, a published writer and graphic artist

if you are an “indie” writer, i’d highly recommend this opportunity; it is free, easy, makes one think about one’s work a little more broadly, and is of course potentially good pr

the questions are fairly comprehensive, but easy to follow, and my first submission, for “poems for lovers loving & being loved” was presented in a way that showed my work to very nice light

as in my first submission, i also featured two poems as samples for “101 sports poems”

lastly, but also very importantly, the entire submission process and resultant “spotlight” on one’s work, is free – that always helps us new (to the world) writers and artists ;-)

thanks so much, i hope you get to stop by, sincerely,

adan

dVersepoets Prompt – Poetics – Poetics 1999

hosted by shawna from rosemarymint

inspired by “a book called The Best American Poetry, edited by David Lehman and Robert Bly” shawna explains that she hadn’t noticed the “1999″ on the book’s cover, in the upper right hand side

understandable, i think ;-)

shawna goes on to ask, what were we doing and thinking and loving or anything ;-) in 1999?

and adds a nice quote of concern from robert bly, this being a short excerpt of that quote, which easily merits a full reading,

“When the irreplaceable flavor of a given decade disappears, our language loses its vigor and becomes merely useful.…”

i won’t try and measure any vigor or descent into “merely useful” my work may have or not have now, but…

thinking back, watching the form and style i used from the early 90s on in my poems, i feel i’ve kept some of both of how i felt and how i expressed it, back then, before i became a young senior ;-)

what has changed, is how and what i’m more aware of, which really makes me wonder what the heck is still on the road ahead!

i’m just gonna go ahead, and assume it’s good ;-)

dVersepoets Prompt – Open Link Night ~ Week 34

hosted by

open link night is a favorite, cause one can write anything, topic wise, within reason i assume ;-)

tonight’s essay by the host at dversepoets pub does talk about the loneliness of a writer’s life, the interior-ness of it, and has some great quotes from hemingway and henry louis mencken

the latter says,

while we are conversing and laughing with ourselves, we manage to shed our loneliness . . . to scatter it as we go along”

while the old man of the sea, adds,

he does his work alone and if he is a good enough writer he must face eternity, or the lack of it, each day.”

so i of course have decided to play both devil’s advocate and confound’er ;-) meaning i meander ’round what “alone” might mean, and if it’s ever really avoidable, even when among everyone else…

it’s a tough question

yoga says we’re all one, yet many schools of yoga say the ego must be dropped behind, along with emotions and thoughts – not too appealing, i thought we were all one ;-)

maybe, we’re meant to transform what we come in contact with, best we can anyways ;-)

so my challenge, was to create something entertaining, spark some interesting imagery, roll some pleasing word-rhythms, and yet intrigue the question of do we really create our best work when most alone, or are we alone anyway, and aloneness is just an excuse…except when we really are alone and must cope with that -

it all confuses me

which is probably as clear as i can be about it!

poetry, at least, can entertain and provide diversions of form and sound and pace and image – we can at least feel good about leaning towards knowing, all along knowing, even sometimes proudly acknowledging, we really don’t know…

but we know we’d be cowards if we didn’t at least try ;-)

so here’s my go -

***

We Write Alone, We Speak Together…

great literature, like
all things moving and
pounding our hearts, like
the rounded moon striking
our earth, changes everything
*
is it truly only possible to create
such impact, alone?
*
are we not alone when we
breathe our own air
among a stadium
of screaming
fellow fans or
among a dance floor of
studied looks from glances
shrouded as distance checks
on tiny turns around the
floor?
*
or
is it degree-of-aloneness like
the size of the moon that
strikes the oceans
making macro-
looks of drops of milk
drops
making crowns when splashed?
*
but what of the Iliad or spoken centuries of
korans and bibles and testaments of
moons striking whole peoples’
dreams of survival
*
were not those words whispered ’round
campfires sized like buildings
warming thousands
not
alone?
*
did the utterances in public minimize
the force on civilizations germinating freedom
in ancient greece or royal rome?
*
or can it be argued, posited, positioned,
speculated, post hoc, someone, a
man, a woman, a child,
first
wrote the words
into the air
alone
*
to be spoken on the ancient widescreen
of burliness and wild hair spun to
whip the air with callings
unconcerned with
aloneness…
*
can we ever not be alone
yet be with one
with
everyone?
*
or
do we really speak in most
aloneness
when we hope
to be with that
someone
always with us when we’re alone…

dVersepoets Prompt – Poetics – Awareness of the Experience

hosted by sheila and walter w smith

i had already told folk i was just too busy to post,  though i did visit and experience some great responses to the prompt on dversepoets today

yet i was able to finish my projects for the coming week, some big chunks of stuff needing getting done in prep -

and though i still have some personal projects that need getting started (much less being getting done ;-) ) i’ve just kept returning to the prompt, one i like so much, becoming aware of one’s personal response to the moment, and in this case particularly, to images

the sets of images i’ll use here, to create a photopoem as i like to call it ;-) are provided by walter, a digital artist who’s variety of texture color tone and degrees of layering-restructuring, is really a delight

i’ve rarely ever used anyone else’s images for my photopoem work, mostly because i feel i won’t have the internal emotional impact of using images i’ve chosen with my own seeing, my own eye, my own desire -

but i felt this was worth the exception, and risk, of just plain falling flat as a dry leaf run over by a semi ;-)

here goes -

***

They Weren’t My Images, I Thought

i didn’t draw my eye to this and capture it like

ice cream melting off a summer cone in texas

hurriedly hungrily reckless to its usefulness or arty-

ness

though once i stopped and sat my mind on it

which is how my heart likes for me to

co-ordinate, behave, myself

and found i agreed to disagree with myself

not wanting to remove pain that taught

me what pain is, learning me to

teach myself the value of

my uncertain future

even if

uncertain mostly to me

anyways

and

gazing on the rolling golden round disrupting

- playfully i decided -

the ruffled purpled oceans flower shells dancing dolphin like

betrayed the first site’s thoughts – confirming my own pit-nicky

bias -

pain remembered is pain honored not forgotten

even winter’s harshest stripes of white whipping cold-welts

passes -

the floral layering leafed with greens carrying scents of seeds

birds gladly drop to earth, the patterned

look -

a washing-machine’s gentle rinse of the tillings the

soul

took uninvited

but accepted under the oval rainbow of the light

wind fluttering waves and spray and wisps

of cotton breathing in the salted air

saving us our moisture

in the needy heat

not forgetting the primal

pain

*

but setting it back wet

into its ocean

i cross the bridge of colors set upon the

the darkness where

in light

all color comes

and

in pigment

all

color

returns

the spectrum playing itself upon the retina’s

of someone else’s eyes

i thought

but i saw them too

the else’s images

they asked me

if i did

really did

remember the pain twisted moments set in muscle

and i said, yes, but more the release and remembrance

of the ocean waters i’d seen before

and more

the ruffled layers with rolling

lavendars

and

more the sign of caution

asking us

if we really truly can remove ourselves from ourselves

no -

i said

and the images were mine….

dVersepoets Prompt – Translucent Poetics: Writing Spoken Words

hosted by claudia schoenfeld and ami mattison

ami, a spoken word poet artist, describes how spoken word poetry differs from traditionally expected written poetry :

excerpt,

“Spoken word is intended for a listening audience. Thus, it must somehow manage to speak itself in a way that makes its various images and metaphors easily apparent, or accessible, to any listener and not necessarily to someone “schooled” in poetry or even spoken word…

“translucency, or poetic transparency is a key element of spoken word poetry….”

ami goes on to of course acknowledge similarities, but then progresses to describe the use of first person narrative to achieve success, ie, communication, with a live audience

as a person who has done a touch of community theatre, and a few years of summer outdoor amphitheater work in galveston, i can relate to how much it must mean to ami to do this type of poetry

maybe one day i’ll merge that old interest of mine with this old interest of mine ;-)

I Spoke My Mind, Kinda

“you told me you loved her, you

i do i did i told her again, again each

time she said “you told me you

loved her!”

how could i tell her her cat and my

Open Link Night

Open Link Night, Week 33 ~ from dVersepoets, hosted by joy ann jones (hedgewitch) is a more than usually welcome prompt for me this week

i’d been debating, whether to, “jump in” with an article on the latest twist of yoga headlines, these from another scorcher from the nytimes, “yoga and sex scandals: no surprise here,” or to instead, do a poem via one of dversepoets’ many fine prompts

open link night, and the recycling of one of my yoga poems, “evolution of a pose,” gave me a chance to merge the two, save some time, and let me go out dinner with my wife for a beautiful sunset here in burlington vermont ;-)

Yoga and Sex

my intent, if i’d done a “pure” yoga article reviewing the hubbub, was to link to the more interesting and comprehensive folk, such as :

yogadork’s “William J Broad on John Friend Scandal: Yoga is a Sex Cult and We’re All Ignorant Minions” -

and carol horton’s “Back to Basics: Yoga as I know it, 101” -

and an article i first saw from nancy alder, and is also linked to by yogadork, “Christopher Wallis addresses “Factual Errors” in NY Times Article: Yoga and Sex Scandals

My Take

my own take is, depending on your view, either too simplistic, or too involved ;-) or maybe just right ;-)

for what it’s worth, this is where i stand regarding yoga

1) my understanding of yoga is, like most things in my life, except for a few constants, an evolving understanding – so i’m open to change, have changed (some), and expect i’ll have a few adjustments still along the way

2) my favorite (short) quote about yoga i’ve seen several times, and saw again today on the mindbodygreen site :

it’s from the dalai lama,

“There is no need for temples, no need for complicated philosophies. My brain and my heart are my temples; my philosophy is kindness.”

3) many of the ideas feelings and precepts in yoga, i learned and heard growing up, so yoga is not a sole depository of human wisdom

4) people argue constantly about something with a big “Y” yoga and a little “y” yoga; i default to dalai’s quote above if you need an authority, i’d still think it’s a needless debate if you don’t ;-)

5) getting rabid about sex not being part of yoga is as wrong as being rabid that it is

sex is part of and responsive to eating breathing sports art dance music literature gazing into your lovers eyes and eating a delicious meal, oops, i’m back to eating, now that’s where there’s no real surprise ;-)

6) arguing about the history of yoga, in detail, is like pointless – we don’t even know if JFK was killed by a lone gunman, or in cahoots with others – generalities is the best we can do

i currently write a daily morning poem, and a later-in-the-day gratitude poem, and when i re-read them, i’m shocked at what i remembered vaguely, and what i didn’t remember in detail at all! – though i know whatever it is that happened, i absorbed

7) my physical and, by unavoidable natural connection, emotional mental health is enhanced by physical activity -

as my emotional and mental health enhances my physical health -

yoga does this, as does dance and music and writing and good company and, oh, yes, eating ;-) eating well anyways ;-)

there’s more, i’m sure, but it’s close to time for my wife and i to go eat, with a great coupon of course ;-) from living social - they don’t pay me to say that, i say it because i am grateful for a decent deal from a company i’ve had fair dealings with several times

just like the yoga ladies i mention above as reference probably don’t always agree with my take on things, but i admire them and what they offer for discourse and pondering

and that’s how i feel about yoga, it doesn’t agree with all of me -

i can’t do headstands, hold myself afloat with one hand, or twist the same both directions, but i admire what it does for me, in my breathing, in my stretching, in its (usual) compassion toward self and others, and its advocation of awareness

with that in mind, i offer you a poem that deeply fit me as it creatively came out, ala dalai’s words, of brain and heart – renamed only slightly to clarify it’s a “yoga” pose i’m writing about ;-)

my thanks to dVersepoets for offering a poet’s-option open mike prompt

it’s like offering an open-pose session of yoga -

the yoga of poetry ;-)

Evolution of a Pose

As a tiny child

(I am told)

I

liked to lift

my chest

off

the floor

and peek about

and smile at those around me.

*

As a quietly raucous teen

(i’ve been reminded)

i’d lift my chest

from the

hot

beach sands

that are galveston

to peer around

at my peers.

*

As a young man intent

on learning asanas

i’d lift prone from

the mat

to

the third chakra

i knew must be in there

…somewhere.

A

cobra

i was, i was told.

Maybe, with smiling fangs?

i wondered…

*

In the service

i’d lift my chest

with my breath as

i pressed my finger

on the trigger.

I was a

cobra

now

i thought.

*

As a dad

i’d lift

my head

as my children

learned to lift their head

then their chest,

core muscles moving

them

to the crawling mobile stage -

and i recall

(i would tell them)

they’d lift their chest

off

the floor

and peek about

and smile..at all those around them.

*

The cobra pose is but

a stage of skin

between

the playful peeking child

and the grateful mom and dad.

The pose

is the peeking child

within.

Nothing more.  And never nothing less.

The Prompt, “Sculpting a Poem“ from dVersepoets

victoria c slotto, hosts dversepoets’ prompt, “sculpting a poem” and gives a brief overview of sculpture’s uses and forms, with many nice links to both 3D and 2D artists known for their work in sculpture

i also happened to pick up a new word, when victoria asked for an “ekphrastic poem” -

ie, a poem that comments upon another art form

*

Tips

among the several tips victoria suggests, i centered on two :

• Create a poem that is multi-dimensional, that is, one that can be read on more than one level.

• Choose one of the above “tools” such as texture or shape and allow it to shine in your poem.

*

dVersepoets

from a few months exposure and experience, i can say that as a group, and individually, the quality of interactions with other poets, both in the content of commentary and in the tone of those critiques, this is a supportive imaginative entertaining group with a lot of creative talent

if you’ve had a hankering to be involved with other writers, esp poetry, i feel i can say this has worked for me ;-)

***

The Shape of Gratitude

the form, the shape, is

inside the stone

i’ve heard, a famous sculptor

once said -

if gratitude is in

the stone of life

how is it found, discovered

in the mix of crumbly and diamond

hard

molecules packed like stone?

does gratitude find the fissure and

split what needs shedding revealing

the expectant-waiting, now

let loose to

breathe?

does

gratitude

softly cloth-scrub the knobby grains and

accept the wave and weave of daily

living

set in stone?

will gratitude

learn

it may be

the real mix is the mesh

of what’s desired and what’s available?

can even angels claim soul’s rights

into any birth?

or is sculpted stone

simply

fluid grace set to rest?

the shape of gratitude is

both

the question, and the answer…

The Prompt, “FormForAll – Writing Visual“ from dVersepoets

gay reiser cannon, hosts dversepoets’ prompt, “formforall – writing visual” and gets into quite some detail about form in poetry via an article by a poet called blue flute, “comparing Japanese and Chinese poetic forms and discussing how these can be adapted into English….”

she posts some of his work, including this excerpt,

“While the written form and rhythm is certainly important, equally important is the visual nature of the poetry and lack of abstract language when compared to Western poetic tradition….”

a history of japan’s written language, as influenced by china is part of this exceptional essay

haiku and tanka are discussed, with some interesting samples included

the prompt itself reads,

“Not worrying about the written form too much, try to write a poem using mainly tangible images to convey your thoughts, using as little abstract vocabulary as possible.”

it’s nice to have some sway, some polite compassion for creativity, and i thank dversepoets for that ;-)

as the essay on dversepoets indicates, forms evolve…

the image language of china gets merged and individualized in its usage and adaptation to the sounds people spoke in japan -

it’s no surprise the same happens here, and inversely there, i would assume

and even dialog, i realized as i was finishing my poem, being the sound itself that language came to imprint as a record on a surface, whether as an idea, an image, an abstraction, or a sound of a voice we recognize, even more so dialog i think, when done well, conveys all of that…

The Prompt, “OpenLinkNight ~ Week 32“ from dVersepoets

natasha head, hosting dversepoets’ openlinknight has some wonderful commentary about why those who write, well, write -

it’s inspiring to read, as a writer or a reader…

she mentions writers who write “daring to post their hearts” -

she writes of how “Through this community, and on through the ether of cyberspace, brave spirits venture forth, hear my words, and encourage me to keep at it….” -

and she quotes walt whitman’s words, “To have great poets…there must be great audiences” then proceeds to tell us we are that great audience, and how much it means to her…

it is, as i’ve mentioned, inspiring…

i don’t know what the title of this work will be, it’s topic, or tone, but, here goes ;-)

***

What Would Walt Whittle

tired

in the way the wind wears stones down

naturally

confident

in the way a bird rests upon thin limbs

whistles, and knows there’s food

for the spotting

angry

that i get so angry

sometimes

glad

i know this is

so

refreshed

when i breathe reminders of the good

things i can feel, the colors i can see, the

touch of my wife’s hand tapping

my thin remaining hair in

place

i feel i’m always finding rocks

i like to turn over, just to see

what crawled under

always finding croppings in the wide open

spaces

i can use for photo-poems, art, word

prompts

there’s so much land

we love crawl-walking over

bike paths, trails, patches of clearing

roadsides and byways with rails

cause they know we know

we’re gonna walk them

anyways

i found my poem’s title tilling time with words

i must’ve absorbed the poem prompt

and grew a new beard of thought

from pondering walt’s wise

words about my

audience

are there really still holiday lights in trees

downtown a week past valentines?

i like that lopey optimism

that assumes there’s

folk who’ll fawn

over every tree

lit like

firefly nests

walt whitman lives

where living’s lived

whether paper ether music or cries of voices

the living…is always felt…

Cover for "Poems for Lovers Loving & Being Loved" by Felipe Adan LermaIntro

below are several places with additional information about “poems for lovers loving & being loved” – including in-depth information, press release, and samples

featured by the indie spotlight recently, this in an in-depth question/answer format in regard to not only the contents of this ebook, but also it’s making and purpose

two sample poems are included in this feature, “heart beats” and “my evil twin” – the latter being one of my more favorite humorous poems (for friendship) from the 90s

the former, “heart beats,” is also featured as one of my earliest posts, for valentine’s day last year! close to when i started yoga-adan ;-)

*

More Samples, On Yoga-Adan

other samples from this large collection of love poems, for lovers and friends and family, are on my site, including “wild music” and “i heard you sing” – both new

undercurrents,” which was written just a few weeks ago, isn’t in the ebook collection; it’s written in response to a prompt from dversepoets, a poet site, and involves kitty cats, but is still a love poem you might enjoy ;-)

another category of love in “poems for lovers loving & being loved” is for occasions, and “a wedding blessing,” also published early in the beginnings of yoga-adan, is included

*

Press Release

a recent press release for “poems for lovers loving & being loved” is also available

separately, “12 stages of loving” has also been released, as a sense of how we are all lovers, at all ages of our lives, examined in a small separate ebook of prose-poetry

*

Related

and related by intent, is my small ebook series, “Everyday Gratitude” – my most downloaded series to-date, with Vol 2, releasing free for five days, beginning wednesday february 15th

these are all perfect small gifts for valentines, and any time one is thinking of how love is in our lives
*

New Sample

below, i’ve posted “grandma” as an example of “other loves” in this extended ebook, “poems for lovers loving & being loved” about love

this will be this poem’s first appearance on yoga-adan

*

 Grandma

Grandmas go way back.

So far I can hardly see

my own shadow.

I’d like to think she lived

in a real deep cool green forest,

probably was friends with

all the animals I’d seen

in the movies as I’d grown up.

Maybe she lived on a high mountain

where the snows always melted

right on time with the first flowers.

She just had a kinda magic,

a sweet magic about her.

And it seems her eyes were always

twinkling, amused by me, saying, yes,

yes I could do that little project

that little idea.  That yes, I can

do it, and it would come out

alright…and that,

that’s my grandma.

© 1994-2011 adam light creations / adan lerma

*

Summary

all in all, over six dozen poems are included in “poems for lovers loving & being loved”

it is available through amazon books, barnes & noble, google books, and smashwords

though these poems are targeted for valentine’s day, they are also an excellent gift for mother’s day, birthdays, and christmas

i hope you enjoy them, and let your friends know about them too ;-)

sincerely,

adan

***

Yoga

i think my ending “yoga” segment in my writings is now replacing my previous featured “final thoughts” section

yoga is about oneness and awareness of the various ways we experience that oneness

oneness is said to be infinite, and i believe the nuances we each bring to our lives and to those around us, is, by definition, also infinite

thus love, in its reach, it variety of expression, and its enduringness, is equally infinite

i have to add, that these are my beliefs, i don’t know them to be true beyond a shadow of a doubt, or in a scientifically proven way, but are what i sincerely believe at this time…

actually probably have believed, for a very long time ;-)

The Prompt, “Poetics: Poetry & Philosophy,” from dVersepoets

charles miller, the host for this particular prompt at dversepoets, writes, in my view, a super interesting essay-intro into the how and why of poetry and philosophy

included, are these two tidbits,

“Since Plato, poets have used philosophy for both inspiration as well as a greater and deeper awareness of reality. From  Lucretius (Democritus) and Dante (Aquinas) to Borges (Schopenhauer), Stevens (Bergson), and Eliot (Hegel), poets have sought and found inspiration in the rational explanation of reality provided by philosophy.”

and

“Poets express the reality of the world in its emotional grip of the soul; thought in the form of an ecstatic awareness of ourselves in the world, so to speak.”

*

so i in turn wrote the rambler fun poem below ;-)

and feel i’ve paraphrased the last sentence into, “thought in the form of an ecstatic awareness of ourselves within ourselves within ‘a’ world, and so must speak….”

couldn’t have said it without charles’ essay prompt!

and spirals that smile when called by their maiden

name, galaxy…

just to one day unseen it’s too far we’re too small

re-contract into the primal black hole of a new

unscheduled big bang breathe

are we but a breathe in time’s wheezy ways

of wishing walls were wet with tiny

spring time buds that birds

in bands break into the

seeds we think are

thoughts

but feel

do we really stop

when we are

buried

or

merely wake to choose

again

if to join the dance of tag

called

a priori…

my collection of love poems “poems for lovers loving & being loved” is being featured by “the indie spotlight” whose motto is :

The Indie Spotlight – Where the Independent Author Shines

what the indie spotlight offers, is a chance to have one’s independent self-published work more widely presented, especially to the growing number of people with ereaders, such as the kindle and nook among others

Cover for "Poems for Lovers Loving & Being Loved" by Felipe Adan Lermaa variety of in-depth questions were presented to help the reader know the writer and the work presented a bit better

i figured with valentines day coming up, “poems for lovers loving & being loved,” among more than a dozen i’ve epublished so far, was the perfect choice

indie spotlight’s submission page provides a downloadable questionnaire, and that can be submitted to one of the founders, gregory bernard banks, a published writer and graphic artist

if you are an “indie” writer, i’d highly recommend this opportunity; it is free, easy, makes one think about one’s work a little more broadly, and is potentially good pr

Yoga

i think my ending “yoga” segment in my writings is replacing my previous “final thoughts” section

change is about adapting and enhancing, at least for us, people ;-)

even if the universe is random, which i lean toward doubting it is, maybe it’s our job, as people, to invest it with some purpose!

and if love is the driving force of our universe, as many believe, maybe our awareness of it, and infusion of that love, into our daily lives, is that purpose -

if nothing else, it sounds and feels good ;-)

the object is… : original poetry

if the words endure, they do so because they link the links -

***

The Prompt, “The Object is Poetics,” from dVersepoets

prompt introduced by mark kerstetter

“This week’s task is to focus on an object in your environment, preferably an object from the natural world, to really examine it, to try and see it with utmost clarity, and to wait for the word, that first word or phrase that seems to capture, for you, the essence, in language, of that object. Then use that word or phrase to construct a poem that gives a voice to that thing.”

the article has several pen and ink like illustrations visualizing the idea

plus prose poetry examples are nicely provided, including excerpts and links for more by the french writer francis ponce

it’s very much like what i try to do in “parts” of my little series writings on waking and my daily gratitude musings

my own slant, thinking about this because of the prompt, is i see that idea, yes, i really like doing this sort of thing, finding the words to “voice” an object, but i also wish to then float that voice and see what else it calls from me, what connections of any kind, feelings, thoughts, memories -

sometimes there’s much, sometimes just a tidbit…

but that’s how everyday life is anyways ;-)

The Object Is…

not shaving for a day or two too

long

isn’t in my best interests,

when i’m interested -

thick white hairs are rapidly

crowding their younger darker heirs

at times one thick bright stump out alone

along the olive skin waiting like crop rotation

nearby three thin wires each a differing shade of

unshaven, cluster inside a pore patiently paring bets

to see

who will survive -

tilling the hairs with thin steel blades

in the direction they tend to grow

means more hairs escape

the cut

but so does a skin beginning to burn

less pimpled now at sixty

more skimpy in

willingness

to heal

i’d think the bristly beard hairs

and

my prissy aging ancient skin

would compromise

they don’t, so

i do it for them

shave only when i have to, once

every few days, morphing me

from satin saint to prickly

pear bear man every

few days -

my man’s face is a seasons of its own

it seems

in just the time it takes to view a few looks

in the morning mirror

Yoga

so much is said in yoga of the objects in our lives, including our thoughts and emotions, as being something to just let slide by, unvalued as “lasting” -

though it certainly wouldn’t be prudent to remain obsessed with a thought or feeling to the point of incapacity, i’ve never thought it was possible we would only be on this earth to simply endure being here…

it makes more sense to me that, whatever we can infuse with consciousness, much like the poetry prompt exercise from dversepoets, gains from our existence -

and we in turn, absorbing an objects own inherent essence, allows us to likewise be infused…

my guess is :

our connectedness is, and our awareness is becoming ;-)

undercurrents : original love poetry

The Prompt, “Undercurrents,” from dVersepoets

prompt introduced by karin gustafson

“For today’s prompt, I urge you to consider the different layers (or faces) of an experience, moment, relationship, person, object.  You may wish to very directly write about these differing layers, or just to allow them to form your words from underneath.”

the intro is a fascinating descriptive account, including an excerpt from a work by Rainer Maria Rilke, of the forms and ideas of “undercurrents”

i highly recommend it

that said, i’m not sure what “undercurrents” really-exactly-to-me means

i have an idea, i think i often allude to its use within even my shorter pieces, like my morning series of “awakening” poems, but i’m not sure, exactly…

so, below, is my shot at it ;-)

Undercurrents

kitty cats, are like people, so much

i told her, smiling, then looking away

they paw the ground pretending to be looking

at something, they seem captivated, by…something

i add, glancing at the edges of a limb of leaves near by

finding a lone flutter-leaf reflecting varying rays of light

my boy kitty, i told her, kept stepping closer to your girl kitty

i whispered, trailing away my voice, seeking a shadow to focus on,

by sniffing the worn wooden steps leading up to where she sat

watching him, i explained, shifting to sit beside her now,

when he got to where she sat, on the warm step set in sun, he

paused, sniffed the air, and sat beside her – can you believe that

i asked

he sure took his time, she said, smiling, then looking up toward a new

cloud

summer-crawling

back to sea

Yoga

undercurrents exist everywhere, i believe

it’s what we’re always telling ourselves, in yoga, that we’re looking for

but i’m beginning to also believe, we’re what we’re looking for, and we’re the undercurrent, hidden from ourselves

certainly it seems our pets already seem to know these things about us ;-)

yoga is the process of becoming more aware, of what we’re already often aware of, and didn’t know it

like one of those paintings with images embedded in it, and we don’t know it, til someone says they’re there…
