A Consistent Routine is Best, Except When It’s Not (Flexibility of Self Is…)

**

Why “Except”

perseverance, and persistence, are vital to our very survival -

it’s sometimes hard to recall, as darwin is reported to have said, “adaptability” is the key

and, for me, adaptability, isn’t possible, without flexibility of mind and spirit

yoga, of course, is notoriously known for flexibility of body ;-)

meant to induce and promote flexibility of spirit, and…

back to darwin, “adaptability to change”

How Key?

how key is the ability to adapt to change?

well, considering that many feel change is the only constant -

and that the theory of relativity is said to rest on a fixed standard, the speed of light -

and change is thus comparable to the speed of light in regard to our experience of what is constant -

then the ability to adapt to change is essential…

ie, pretty darn key ;-)

So What’s the Point?

for me, it’s to look then at all the ways flexibility to change, adaptability, can occur in people…us!

since my previous post had to do with playfulness and seniors and fitness exercise, for me right now, i would say that the ability to recognize (awareness) and respond to (exercise) routine, with creative playful adaptability, is probably one of the most important things i personally need to re-learn from childhood, and re-apply as an adult

vary my routine with intensity

vary my routine with time

vary my routine with movement variation

vary my exercise and creative and mundane routines with minute variances -

like tiny dabs of paint speckling the greater canvas, or word on word building a joined feeling and thought -

and give myself compassionate credit for trying and accomplishing what i do each day…

Teaching Seniors is Like Teaching the (almost) Whole Population

**

Why “Almost”

the most straightforward answer to that i currently know, is simply the difference between bones still growing and mature bones

other important differences exist of course, such as emotional maturity, experience, hormonal factors, but for purposes of exercise fitness or wellness, that’s what comes most to mind

according to afaa, the still developing bones of children and adolescents, differ on the type and amount of stress they can experience safely, from those of a person whose bones have reached their mature sizes and shapes

granted, the elderly (in particular) are prone to diminished bone density, but are not typically concerned with continued bone-length growth

but i’m getting side-tracked

my point is simply this is why i would consider the teaching of seniors, almost like teaching the whole population

seniors embody everything all the bone-matured age groups can have; plus, a few people would say, more than a number of features more prevalent in those that are old(er) ;-)

though i contend there’s some nice things ’bout getting old(er) ;-)

*

What Seniors (sometimes) Forget to Keep From Being Young

ironically, i believe, what can be included from those who are younger, into exercise routines for seniors, is our originally innate love for play ;-)

silversneakers even includes the word “fun” into their idea of exercise -

Get fit, have fun, make friends!”

smiling, laughter, and being happy, are often, as one of my favorite sites indicates, something one must work for, yet receive as a by-product

*

“Curvy Voices”

an excellent free ebook that just came out, as is available in pdf format, on anna guest-jelley’s curvyyoga site

thirty-six interesting  (including my small input ;-) ) articles on accepting oneself as a means to becoming more of what you want to be are included

as anna posts on her recent feedback page about the book,

“this book is about so much more than the physical practice of asana”

and

“It’s really about coming home to ourselves”

there’s a lot of compassion, caring, and expertise available on this site

*

Final Thoughts

Adan Lermagetting fit and staying fit are more closely aligned than most people think i believe -

i know that was true for me ;-)

my manner of getting fit, especially as i’ve gotten old(er) is much more doable, and sustainable, the more closely it is aligned with how i want to stay fit

sheila and i try to teach this in our classes -

and fitness knowledge, as i conclude in “10 sports lessons i can smile at now” is critical

fortunately, the abundance of access to and information about fitness, and wellness, is as available as one is willing to search for and obtain

the Y where sheila and i are currently teaching classes, has many varied programs available

i should of course, that they are not affiliated or endorsing my site, this is just my stuff ;-)

*

as most people who’ve read my posts know, i feel awareness is yoga’s greatest gift to me -

and this awareness then, of the need for playfulness, is something i can very much credit my practice of yoga for ;-)

take care everyone, blessings ;-)

Excerpt

people from all areas and walks of life have contributed to this free resource

this is an excerpt from the curvy yoga page linked to above, posted by anna,

“When I began practicing yoga, I didn’t have a community.

“I primarily practiced on my own at home. And when I did venture out to class, I tried not to make much eye contact with people. I didn’t want to see the judgment I assumed would be in their eyes when they saw my curvy body getting on my mat

“That time in my life was really hard. There’s just no other way to say it. I had this little thought in the back of my mind that things could be different — that I didn’t always have to struggle with food. That I didn’t have to constantly be on a diet or hate myself…”

Anna goes on to explain how things developed for me, and says this,

“And this is why Curvy Voices was born. I wanted to share a book that would inspire all of us, especially those of us who may be new(er) to this journey. As I read through the 36 stories in this incredible book, I was struck time and again by the depth and breadth of their beauty.

“Our thoughtful and courageous writers cover topics from body lovin’ to childbirth, loss to illness, the thrill of yoga to the fear of stepping on the mat. The incredible quotes shared throughout this post are representative of the inspiring messages shared within these pages….”

today is anna’s birthday, so i suggest giving her, and yourself, the gift of this inspiring book ;-)

Intro

Opps, Again

this is the second time i’ve let a post go out before putting in my finished post

so for those who came to a template, or the removed-from-view page, my sincere apologies

not that i don’t have lots and lots of excuses, and even some explanations! but none are life threatening nor permanently disrupting, so, i’ll get back to the intended post ;-)

*

Curvy Yoga Intro

i came across anna’s call for articles for a new ebook a few weeks ago, and the deadline is now approaching : february 14th, valentines, and my wife’s birthday!

so even the deadline-details practically demand i share this info ;-)

anna guest-jelley has the well-regarded site, curvyyoga, and has been posting relevant important posts on yoga, self-image, and gentle self-acceptance for a good while

*

Curvy Yoga Site

anna’s site says, the curvy yoga site is “for people who want to live the lives they imagine, today. Who don’t want to wait until they’re flexible, skinny, have enough money, etc. to start treating themselves well…”

her site includes an impressive and welcome list of resources, such as video, podcasts, and written instructions for poses, including information on modifications

also included on her resource page, is a list of teachers for curvy bodies

so what does a curvy yoga look like?

take a look -

impressive huh?

*

afaa, in the studies my valentine-wife-baby and i both did, brought us issues to be aware of that sound simple enough, but that without pausing, i had just not thought of

a large mass is slower to get going, and gathers more power and speed once in motion, and therefore, needs awareness and caution regarding range of motion and in coming to rest or reversing directions

there are modifications available for movements that allow a more comfortable and productive reaching and lunging and bending

many of these modifications are also valid for almost anyone who is not in top shape, hasn’t warmed up properly, isn’t limber, has had an injury or illness, is elderly, or simply de-conditioned – i know i’ve been the latter more times than i wanna be again ;-)

and beyond the physical, there is of course so much more -

anna’s site addresses these also…

***

The Invitation from Curvy Yoga

from anna’s site :

AN INVITATION

So here’s my proposal, and I really (really, really!) hope you’re in: I’m going to curate a book of curvy yogi stories from around the world, and I want you to be part of it! I will accept submissions for six weeks and then will put it together in a beautiful, downloadable, free(!) eBook to share far and wide.

there’s much more details on her page about the new ebook, and a way to contact curvy yoga if you have more questions

*

so, if you’ve been wanting to get in on the ebook revolution, have something to say (who doesn’t ;-) ), need to share, and wanna stay in the loop for a free ebook, you gotta consider this ;-)

as mentioned before, the deadline is valentines!

***

Great Sample Article on Curvy Yoga Site

i should add that one of my favorite meaningful articles about yoga, is from anna’s site, from last summer, “Shame-Free Yoga: Yoga for Your Body

i still think about this article, and part of anna’s response to my own comment at the time, the “inclusiveness” of the article

the issues that affect a curvy person are similar to that affecting anyone wanting to regain their health and self-esteem

yes, there are differences, distinctions, things that won’t apply -

yet the similarities, i believe, are worth being aware of…

***

Conclusion

even from way back, as i would struggle from being fairly fit, to falling off the health-wagon, to working my way back again, sometimes with more mental and emotional weight than physical weight, i couldn’t understand why some people made fun of those who were actually out on the track or jogging trail, and now-a-days on the mat, trying

“most” of why, it seems, is lack of understanding -

this call for contributions for people to submit to what will be a free downloadable ebook, is a chance to not only share, but fill in and replace some of the normal mis-understanding and fear we all sometimes have, towards others, and ourselves…

Yoga Injuries – An Article Recap Pointer, via YogaDork

***

Intro

Pros & Cons

i won’t rehash all the various pros and cons of : what kinds of injuries can happen during yoga, why they might happen, when they might happen, if being injured during yoga means it is or isn’t yoga

but i will say i’m really glad people are talking and debating and thinking about it

i’ve had friends and students from texas to vermont, ok, well, from texas and vermont ;-) contact me or tell me they’ve been “in discussion” with their teacher or class about injuries during yoga

so i think that’s great!

The Article

what this article is for, is to point the reader to the best most comprehensive article listing i’ve come across so far

i’ve read “some” of these, and know “some” of the folk involved, digitally anyways ;-)

so yogadork in nyc does a pretty good online job of poking fun of yoga yet providing pretty dependable information to chew on

her article, appropriately named, after a series of like articles from her helped stir the pot the ny times lit a fire under (meaning this issue was always here, just needed heating up), is :

“Complete and Exhaustive Guide: Yoga Community Responds to NYT ‘How Yoga Can Wreck Your Body’”

from this article you can reach a very very wide gamut of opinions and thoughts

folk i’m familiar with and can recommend from my perspective, include jill miller and nancy alder

sites i’m familiar with i’d trust to listen to with an open ear include yoga journal, the kripalu center, recovering yogi, and yoga tune up (the latter also run by jill miller)

***

Listening to Yourself for Guidance

Intro

easily the best and most reachable thing for any one of us to do regarding what to do or not do during yoga to prevent injuries and maximize our experience

ok, now, have said that…

i’m gonna say the following, with it meant mostly for seniors like myself, but also anyone of any age who finds things in what i’ll say that appeals to them – not “too” unlikely, we oldsters were youngsters once ;-)

*

The Problem With “Listening” to Ourselves

i know that i have “listened” to the wisdom in my body many a time in the past, and got hurt

I know that many people my age have the same lingering doubt about fully trusting themselves, i hear it often in class, over coffee, at the check-out line :

“i figured i could do blah-blah-blah, but i guess (hahaha) i really couldn’t (oohhh, that hurts)”

fully trusting the wisdom in our bodies presumes we know what and how to hear what’s being said, and translate it properly through over half a dozen decades of mis-steps, warnings from others, injuries, and just plain natural accidents

we know we don’t know what condition our condition is in, to paraphrase an old song from “the day” -

how strong or what weak points our spine has -

which joints have lost more mass than we’d realized -

how our muscles has slowed their response time -

how knowing we know more and yet don’t know enough means we’re gonna take longer making decisions which might mean not moving that mis-aligned knee back in place quick enough

there’s some of the above i didn’t even know i needed to know before i got my fitness certifications

*

Learning What to Listen For

so i’m not saying not to listen to oneself, one’s personal wisdom, the wisdom nature has ingrained in each of our bodies, or, that it’s not possible to have that kind of wisdom available to us

it is, it’s there, we do have it in us, from birth and before

i truly believe that

but it’s not a turnkey listening experience

we get a lot of static and variant messages as we grow up, as we raise our children, as we continue to age

the trick is to learn what to listen for

and for me, if i’m gonna listen to my body, i need more information about my body

how does it talk to me? when is it serious and when is it playing with me, teasing me to see if i’ve got some gumption?

how do i do this without breaking the message machine, my body?

the trick then becomes how to learn to know what to listen for

folks, things like the article above from yoga-dork, with avenues of offered wisdom, is one route

finding teachers that’ll answer questions in a way you trust that your experience then validates as right for you

doing your own research: reading, dvds, classes – there’s tons of stuff

i’ll tell you right now, i’m not a real dumb person, and i’m interested in my health, and like the idea of developing myself into a better person (that’s the spiritual part ;-) ) – and it’s been a tough go

i’m fortunate i have a wife who’s also interested in all this (actually she got me started on learning more through fitness workshops etc)

you can do it alone, but you don’t have to…

*

Nice Thing ‘Bout Getting Old(er)

this is an ebook i put together organizing some of the article i’ve written on this site about fitness, yoga, aging, and creativity

it’s meant to be a nibble-at-it, reference, enjoy-the-poems collection that hopefully leads you to other learnings, your own things to learn, about you

there’s no affiliate links in it, i won’t know you got it unless you tell me, and i don’t offer it on my website

***

Final Thoughts

Adan Lerma

i’m enjoying doing fitness and yoga classes with my wife, mostly for seniors -

but also for most anyone who’s de-conditioned, i know what that’s like ;-)

and we’ve surprised a few fairly fit classes we subbed at with what we brought to their fitness class they hadn’t expected, especially in terms of awareness and fitness information

i’m also enjoying doing my photography, and writing my poetry

find what you like to do to be and stay more fit

discover things you like to do

and you’ll be a long way toward listening to your own wisdom, from your body and your soul ;-)

namaste´ – con dios – god be with you

YOGA-ADAN PRESS RELEASES

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

November 21, 2011, Burlington, Vermont

A Short Look at Yoga Fitness & Creativity in Aging

Articles – Reviews – Creativity

Over 25,000 words and 30 plus color images.

Culling articles, reviews, and a special section on creativity in aging from his website, yoga-adan.com, Adan Lerma presents a short beginner’s look at his adventure into, as Adan puts it, “aging fit and gracefully as a young senior.”

Nice Thing 'Bout Getting Old(er) - Cover

Material is organized into three sections: article, reviews, and creativity in aging.

Articles on fitness, muscle memory, and realizing limitations teach awareness, are followed by a series of DVD reviews for seniors.

Additionally, a review of a senior yoga instructor class both Adan and his wife Sheila attended is included, as is a review of an article entitled “Aging Gracefully.

“The point of staying fit and being creative, is to better enjoy our lives,” says Adan.

With that optimism in mind, “Nice Thing ‘Bout Getting Old(er)” concludes with six featured articles and poems.  One article details how Adan and his wife Sheila created a music dance video for submission to a contest, while another outlines Adan’s writing history since the 70s.

Poetry selections include, “Aging Gracefully,” titled after the article reviewed earlier, plus, “Evolution of a Pose.”  Both poems express the perspective of many years.

A small resource section with links to sites of interest is included near the end of the book.

As with Adan’s previous ebooks, like ”Photography Plus,” a mixture of Adan’s original work from the past 30 is blended with newer creative projects.

More information about Adan, including his studies and degrees, can be found on his website’s About page.

Adan next resumes his collection of “100 Sports Poems” with Vol 5 on Inspiration.  Volumes 6-9 feature sports poems on football, basketball, and volleyball, among many other activities.

Adan’s eBooks page on his website lists all currently available ebooks, with links to available Amazon Books and Google Books listings, plus press releases.

Happy Birthday to Me! ;-)

*

Adan at Table with Light from Window

Adan at Table with Light from Window

*

sheila captured this image with the light coming through the window at skinny pancake here in burlington

the decorative bottle must’ve brought us good light ;-)

*

it might seem silly to have an article with a title that includes both balance and yoga, and yet be a “tidbit” post ;-)

but this is my tidbit birthday gift to myself ;-)

today i crack into the 60′s!

i’m 61! today!! yay!!!

*

Being a Libra

i’ve always told myself my astrological sign didn’t “really” mean anything, and i long ago quit buying libra calendars and reading my daily horoscope in the paper

but the idea of libra, of balance, weighing pros and cons, desires and aversions -

that has remained with me, and lately, i’ve come to embrace it -

though, to tell the truth, more like an icky thick sweat shirt hug with hands not pressing anything to tightly ;-)

*

Balance, Then

ok, here’s the main course

since i can remember, before i’d heard about astrological signs, or even spoke english, and thought “libre” meant “free” rather than balance, i was always searching for the counter-weight to ideas -

this led to a running raucous dialog with my dad, who i realize now, entertained my endless questioning and back & forth arguments with a patience i just didn’t understand (but now quietly thank him for)

equality was a driving force in my feelings and thinking, i even searched out and read the constitution of the united states when i was about 12, but that immediately led to my literal application of my inherent right to happiness, and that didn’t sit too well, with either of my parents ;-)

*

Balance, Now

oh, i still like to argue sides, many a patient blogger has given me patient leeway in my thoughts -

but rather than feeling that “balance” is the equal positioning of the wheel in all directions, forward & backward plus side to side, so that it may roll without wobble, i now (recently) view balance differently

balance is now the counter effort thought activity feeling intent movement that allows me to maintain the “leaning” i’m more favoring at any given time

notice i’ve given myself lots of wiggle room to change my “leaning” and thus what and how i’d need to balance ;-)

*

Examples

Physical

if i’m gonna enjoy dancer’s pose, playfully, i still first have to find that day’s – “today’s” balance, which may mean i need to wear shoes, or use a chair, or hold a lower center of gravity, or stay stretched upward and leg-curled longer

so, if i’m using a chair with a one-hand balance at the back of the chair with one hand, and my free hand holding my free-hand-side foot, if i need to feel gravity, my weight, or a grounding, i’m not so much concerned with pulled my lifted left up or outward -

my “balance” that day is a sort of hunkering down, probably to regain or reset my physical balance (and maybe my mental or emotional balances too, depending what’s been going on)

then say i’m feeling playful, kinda light hearted anyways, and wanna play ;-) -

ok, now my balance is staying “hunkered” yet allowing myself to still be playful in this less stretched less reaching posture -

my emotional playful-need balancing has to counter-weight my gravity-grounding-need balancing

*

Balance is a Living Act

balance then is not simply a set ratio of extended and curled limbs, unresponsive to heart and mind urges for creative expression of being alive, and yet centered -

balance is the counter-weighting of multiple concerns that can vary day-to-day, morning to evening, year to year even

core and back may need more tensile input into the length and duration of the pose’s dance

mind and heart may have other needs – as may a child or significant other

balance is a living act -

in essence i must find, or discover, or allow to appear, that which will balance my intent -

did i want to stretch in dual directions and feel the sky touch the soil?

or did i want to feel my core fine tune my limbs like time touching a sunset?

so much is possible in dancer’s pose just balancing interests!

Yogic Balance, Out in the World

much has come up recently about what essentially is a question of how does one balance one’s life between personal and social good

yoga modern, via an intriguing article from carol horton, just this week, asked just, “has yoga created a culture of escape?” with a subtitle on the site’s opening page, of, “refuge and renewal vs. escape and denial.”

it’s especially intriguing to me, because i remember standing at the front doorway of the esoteric philosophy center in houston at the beginning of the 70s with the director, bill dimitri, the two of us watching a large group of hari krishnas chant on the large long front lawn (that i’d mow occasionally in exchange for being to attend meditation classes there) -

and i remember distinctly saying how those kids (folk my own age then of course ;-) ) were just escaping from having to think!

and bill smiled, waited a bit, and said, “they’re still just innocent…”

*

another look, but at those at the occupied zones helping bring up conversation about the balance of individual and social action, is nicely written by caryn mirriam-goldberg, poet laureate of kansas, in her article, “What Democracy Looks Like Today at Occupy Wall Street: Everyday Magic, Day 426“.

images and vignettes are given and the sense of the innocence and well-meaning of the people there seems authentic and real

my comment posted there is as i’ve voiced regularly recently, that some media attention to the historical perspective to the 60s and earlier movements, would help people see this is a continuing effort stretching back way before my time ;-)

and hopefully provide some buffer to probable inevitable backlash, which is natural, since nothing moves in a straight line, even light evidently ;-)

*

this is the same concern, i’d been voicing “back in the day”

and anyone with some historical and media grit, could probably point out the countless recurring times just since the last 1800s, that it was questioned as to whether yoga was inducing escapism

the split among the new world colonies in the 1600s, between those who were stringent believers in hard work and no play, vs those who thought a little time in the new world sun might do a body good, probably ended up in a similar “face off”

and didn’t the greeks sport a similar divide among themselves?  apollo and dionysus?

*

my point, regarding yogic balance, isn’t that the whole question of which type of potential escapism, social involvement or self involvement is “the” escapism, but rather that neither is -

yogic balance, for me, as i mentioned in the beginning, is the tilting of the scales of one’s activities, so as to maintain balanced enough to continue the main activity one wants to do

so, maybe, wanting quiet time to write or paint or sing or simply sit and watch the sun and clouds, alone or with a significant other, might require some approving of the tweaking of the tax code or how our elected representative “represent” us -

and yet, wanting to be intimately and intricately involved in the day to day operations of how people can get along, the law, might just as well in turn require reflection and a responsiveness to one’s internal needs

*

yogic balance, it seems, is as much a spiritual-mental-emotional act, as it is standing on one foot with the other curled behind and held by the hand not stretched out reaching for the not-so-low-hanging-fruit of inspiration

it’s hard to express, and maybe caryn’s ending words in her article noted above says it best,

“The rest of the world, just as I had left it, wasn’t configured the way of the occupation, so no wonder that the main criticism everyone has about this movement has to do with how little of it translates into clear soundbites. But then, that’s why there is an occupation in the first place: to be the change so many of us seek.”

and of course, being the change, can, and must be doable, well, anywhere…

eventually ;-)

My Favorite Moment of Balance

my mom had gone to the museum of fine arts in houston with sheila, my middle sister, and myself, to see an art show and give her a chance walk somewhere’s different

mom’s quite a walker

anyway, we’d seen the impressionist exhibit traveling through town, and were meandering among the renaissance work where i knew there’d be religious art she’s always enjoying standing in front of

we were in a particularly long room, the west side of an upper floor of the newer wing of the museum, and i noticed mom had stopped wandering from painting to painting, and settled herself, arms crossed, feet planted, in front of what looked like a last supper rendition

the painting was sebastiano ricci’s 1720 “last supper”

*

[ image not currently accessible to show, but may be seen on the mfa houston site ]

*

one by one, the three of us “younger folk” ;-) made our way to my mom’s side and peered to see what she saw so differently she was magnetized there

“you like that one, mom?”

“si”

sheila chimed in, “it’s beautiful isn’t it?”

then my sister, “a lot like the famous one”

“mira,” says my mom, “la mujer tiene ropa para limpiar”

i looked and looked and saw it, the woman to the left from our view, holding a laundry basket of wash, watching the goings on of the last supper

then my mom pointed to the plates of food, and added, in english, grinning and chuckling, “somebody has to do the cleaning”

*

we all have a part to play in making / creating / being creative change in our world

my quote from the end of my article i posted about this, “my mom at the museum,” shortly after her 84th birthday, still holds for me today,

“if yoga is, partially at least, the development of a balanced sense of the importance of all facets of our life, then my mom, devoutly catholic, has made that attribute her own

yoga, it seems, like oneness, as part of oneness, is like the air -

no one owns it, we all need it….”

Final Thoughts

Adan Lerma

Prioritizing Balances

i was intending to make a short video about dancers pose, to add to my just budding youtube channel of, for now, “playing around” videos

but have come up across several self-imposed deadlines :

finishing this article for my birthday -

finishing my 1st epublishing project, also for my birthday

creating a video would jeopardize one or both of the “finishings” ;-)

the video can wait, and be a looked-forward-to project for me, hopefully in the near future

choices have to be made -

and we do what we can that best balances what is needed, for us and for others

my mom knew this ;-)

*

Back to Innocence

and maybe the psychological point of balance, mine anyways, is when, somehow, through the balancing of the tilts and sways and seesaws, the “the effort to entertain our personal tilt without falling” as i put it at the beginning of this post, is finding and keeping a point of innocence

much as i concluded in my post on baseball and yoga

much as i saw in my child in “angel baby

much as i hope we retain each day

balanced-ly of course ;-)

Getting There

College Street East to University of Vermont

College Street East to University of Vermont

a gorgeous almost fall like weather day that’d threatened rain all day for the evening, ended clearing to a lightly brisk dusk, perfect for walking to the university from our apartment

the short walk up the hill to the front of university of vermont‘s main campus is saluted by old century old mansions converted into frat houses (it looked like), university offices, and possibly one grand still functioning family residence

from there, we’d seen an online map through a maze of buildings to the location of the lecture

unfortunately, the simple schematic proved too much for the actuality of the buildings, and most the students were of the “gee, i’m not sure” mode

but fortunately, following the “probable” path of the online map, we came to two buildings to choose from, and finally found the lecture hall

the beauty of the evening and the campus, though, made the search-journey worthwhile ;-)

*

Why We Went

two reasons really – the lecture, and a chance to walk sheila’s college campus

the lecture, though, was the main draw this evening, and we were much looking forward to it

connective tissue, catchy title, yoga, wife’s old alma mater, good weather – yea!

*

Deciding to Review

typically, the decision to review is an expression of why and what i liked about something, a dvd, a course, a festival

but here, i literally don’t have the expertise to do the lecture justice

yet, maybe, i can give some of the gist of the lecture, some resources, and still provide some of the sense of valuable-ness sheila and i both felt we received attending that evening

Dr Helene Langevin, M.D., Bio

in this instance i’ll quote the info from one of many handouts (plus nice carrying bag) we got as we checked into the auditorium

Dr Langevin’s name was bolded in the flyer; i added all additional bolding in this bio

Helene Langevin, M.D., is a professor of neurology at the University of Vermont.  Dr. Langevin received her medical degree from McGill University in Montreal.  She completed a residency in internal medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital and a fellowship in endocrinology and metabolism at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.  She joined the UVM faculty in 1996, where she also serves as the director of the College’s Program in Integrative Health.  A licensed acupuncturist, Dr. Langevin’s research focuses on the molecular mechanisms responsible for the therapeutic effects of acupuncture and massage, which manipulate the connective tissue, as well as movement-based therapies such as yoga.  She has lectured on the subject of the biomechanical effect of acupuncture needling locally and internationally.

my apologies i felt the need to bold so much ;-)

***

The Review

Intro

typically, this is the easiest portion of my post to lay out; i go to a festival, or write a poem, or experience an asana, describe it, then try to figure out what it is i saw or wrote or practiced

in this case, i’m out of qualified level of comfortably or reliably expressing what i heard

my solution in this case was two-fold :

1) to write everything i possibly could surrounding the presentation – the resources guide, any brochure or flyer descriptions i wanted to use, even the lead-up walk to and within the campus

2) then present in outline form, what i heard or thought i understood, and how it was presented

3) and end with my personal take-away of that evening’s lecture

*

Presentation

Reviews: Clear Sailing?

Review

1)

dr langevin introduced herself and began her presentation with some stills of animals in various stages of stretching projected on a large screen

this was followed by remarkably similar stretch poses by infants and very young children

i’ve always felt most our ideas of what poses are, are ideas based on patterns already within us, movements we must stay in a range within-of based on being human, ideas based on if not remembered then sensed postures we each “went through” in becoming more adult bodies

my poem this week, “evolution of a pose“, based on ideas like this i’ve had for a very long time, triggered into being by dr langevin’s talk, is an internal memory exploration of how the so-called cobra pose, is, to my thinking, the peeking child pose most of us have experienced

one of my first posts, “Asanas (Poses) – do I HAVE to do the pose this way? part 1: no…,” speaks directly to the idea that poses are already in us :

“i imagined a non-tv watching no-phone non-guru person in india, sitting, watching a gaggle of playing children, maybe ages 6 mths to 3-4 years, all stretching and running and bent over and crawling, and, laying prone, their hands flat to the floor by their sides, heads lightly raised to peek out at a playmate or parent, smiling, their hearts out to the world ;-) …”

and i was quoting from a comment i’d left on kara-leah’s yoga lunchbox ;-)

*

what was particularly interesting to me at the time of the lecture was dr langevin’s explanation that a child in cobra pose, or even a mini-superman (feet also off floor), is that this “pose” is a significant indicator of a child developing enough core strength that, soon, they’re gonna be mobile! crawling!

the child-peeking pose isn’t merely (as if it were really only “merely”) attempting to view his or her surroundings, make contact with these wondrous bigger folk hanging around and peeking back ;-) -

but is a developmental stage of huge meaning for future mobility!

isn’t that we do, as adults, when we practice cobra or superman or some flying or other?

we’re “re”-strengthening our core, our ability to move about in our world – as from day way-back! wow

*

2)

dr langevin then also showed images of the layers immediately under our skin, talked about how connective tissue is everywhere in our bodies, in everything we are, from the tip of our heads to the tips of our toes -

and, how damage to our connective tissue layer (of the various degrees of connective tissue, this is thicker yet still very elastic) between our skin and muscles, decreases mobility

damage can apparently occur from illness, injury, and even surgery

the damage to this connective tissue layer is like scar tissue

scar tissue is the body’s attempt to heal a wound

scar tissue restrictiveness can be lessened -

with stretching!

*

lab rats are the source of most of dr langevin’s research, and she was very clear that there is not a 1:1 correlation between what she’s observed in a lab setting in a mouse, and the human body -

and, that the act of observation (within ourselves, i believe, this is an act of awareness), plus the manner that connective tissue damage was induced and reversed, implied factors that could further diminish any correlation to us

that being said, there was extreme hopefulness that the lab results were promising and applicable to our own bodies

*

3) images of fibroblasts before any stress or impact, after stress inducement, and after stretching the lab rat for 10 minutes, were shown and compared

an unstretched fibroblast appears to me like a tightly clustered star, while a fibroblast that’s been de-stressed or stretched, seemed to me like a kite or sail on the sea – but in this case, i guess the sea in us ;-)

the stretching induced in the lab rats was non-traumatic or injurious as far as could be known

they were held lightly by their tail and raised just slightly, inducing a gripping of the edge of a platform by the front feet, while the back feet lifted into a relaxed pointing stretch – this was held for ten minutes

*

4) mri images were shown of the connective tissue, slightly below the skin, undamaged and damaged, with the damaged tissue being much more dense and inelastic

the more elastic healthy connective tissue had much more movement, and in several mri movies, we were able to see the sliding action of the various layers during movement

tissues that had more healthy, or if damaged – stretched, connective tissue, had much more movement between the layers during movement of that portion of the body -

layers would even move in opposite directions at different speeds!

indicating to me a great sense of interaction in our bodies!

certainly not a sense of a solid chunky movement ;-)

*

5) images were also shown of how an acupuncture needle doesn’t simply stimulate a nerve or area, but intrinsic in the therapy is a slight twisting of the needle, which then wrapped the collagen fibers attached to the fibroblasts, and literally pulled the fibers like stretching a net or sail!

i’ve searched for awhile to find a page to link to with an adequate image to show this, but only found the typical topical photos, so i’ve attached the image from one of the flyers provided by Community Medical School at the university of vermont entitled, “connective tissue: the ‘glue’ that holds bodies together”

*

Connective Tissue & Needle Image

Connective Tissue & Needle Image

*

the one search that almost showed what i was looking for ironically had a university of vermont image on the top row ;-)

*

Brochure Description of Lecture

the fall 2011 brochure of seminar topics from the community medical school has a great slogan, “you don’t have to be a brain surgeon to attend”

thank goodness ;-)

the class description is so good and so accurately reflects the lecture we experienced i’ve reproduced it here :

“Nearly a dozen years ago, research at UVM determined that connective tissue – located between muscle, fat, and skin throughout the body – is responsible for the “tug” that occurs during acupuncture needling and may play a role in its therapeutic effects.  Find out how this remarkable tissue, which becomes stiff form injury, responds to the type of stretching performed through yoga, and how researchers are trying to determine whether or not there is a link between this mechanical stimulation and the tissue’s ability to heal.”

i could’ve placed the description above several places within my review, but felt this spot, nearer the acupuncture image, would also serve as a nice summary and confirmation

*

My Take Away

Reviews: Clear Sailing?

Review

such simple confirmation, even at the elementary tentative level of research on lab rats, make me incredibly hopeful and optimistic for all of us

lecture information like this, plus articles like that from the himalayan institute, “aging gracefully,” which include references to data on how our bodies and brains work, are, as i see it, positive efforts at merging what’s in our hearts with what in our minds

it’s difficult in these days, and, if i read history even mildly correctly, all the days people have been around, with even yoga practitioners joining in protests against perceived (mostly justifiably i believe) injustices, it’s good to see positive movement in our awareness

and at the end of the day, we have to return to ourselves -

whether from the lab, the streets, the movies, or work, we return to ourselves -

and yoga, more so for me than other activities i enjoy or have enjoyed in my life (though not exclusively! ;-) ) provides a means for a gentle doable consistent return to our essences

whether through meditation, asanas (pose work), or breath work, yoga provides that gentleness

*

it’s interesting to note, that dr langevin, when asked by an audience member during the post-lecture Q&A, if she practiced yoga, replied yes, but at home in a self-practice, because the classes she’d tried were not as gentle as she needed or preferred

sheila and i are finding, more and more, with our target group, that the need for a doable gentle fitness routine, is not only the class type of choice, but crucial for retention

Final Thoughts

First, and Second ;-)

first, please, bear in mind, these are my extrapolations; even dr langevin was clear that her lab and research results were strictly applicable to her test subjects, and the connection to human applicability had its own problems

second, my sincere thanks to the university of vermont for presenting such a useful approachable series of lectures and information for the general public, it is a true resource, not just for the local and state community, but for everyone and anyone interested

connective tissues sliding past other tissues in gliding movements -

if thought patterns mimic biological patterns, the implications of over-lap, and “grey” areas” seems prominent to me

*

only some issues may be clear-cut yes/no questions and situations

which, unfortunately, doesn’t mean a yes or no is sometimes needed, with irreversible consequences; inaction, if reflection is unavailable, may not be an option at times

*

over-lap, to me, means some aspect of two opposite moving areas come into contact to facilitate optimal movement

sounds kinda like negotiating to me, compromise

again, not always possible; but certainly not always avoidable ;-)

*

breath, yoga, relaxation and release of excess stress, promotes scar tissue repair, even after many years

we can heal…

*

as above so below, we are all one, we are all of a one, snow flakes have structures similar to stars

there’s an intuitive sense of connections among things, people, life living and life inorganic both, when i ponder a snowflake and a star

there’s a glimmer of similarity i gleam when i hear of research such as dr langevin has produced with her lab rats, and us – and it’s more than just the quick association to “rat pack” ;-)

*

Magazine of Yoga’s Tom Myers Fascia Interview

one of my seminal online article introductions this year came via magazine of yoga

Conversation: Tom Myers, “Fascia as our ‘Organ of Form’”, part one and part two, added much to my being able to understand the implications of dr langevin’s work better than i would have otherwise

the concept of our own oneness of ourselves reaching from tip to tip and end to end of us, makes much more sense with even the slight grasp of what fascia and connective tissue within myself really is

and extending that fascia connectedness to notions of how we feel and think, well, just doesn’t seem such a stretch anymore ;-)

Evolution of a Pose

As a tiny child

(I am told)

I

liked to lift

my chest

off

the floor

and peek about

and smile at those around me.

*

As a quietly raucous teen

(i’ve been reminded)

i’d lift my chest

from the

hot

beach sands

that are galveston

to peer around

at my peers.

*

As a young man intent

on learning asanas

i’d lift prone from

the mat

to

the third chakra

i knew must be in there

…somewhere.

A

cobra

i was, i was told.

Maybe, with smiling fangs?

i wondered…

*

In the service

i’d lift my chest

with my breath as

i pressed my finger

on the trigger.

I was a

cobra

now

i thought.

*

As a dad

i’d lift

my head

as my children

learned to lift their head

then their chest,

core muscles moving

them

to the crawling mobile stage -

and i recall

(i would tell them)

they’d lift their chest

off

the floor

and peek about

and smile..at all those around them.

*

The cobra pose is but

a stage of skin

between

the playful peeking child

and the grateful mom and dad.

The pose

is the peeking child

within.

Nothing more.  And never nothing less.

this week i follow my new yoga poem, evolution of a pose, with a review of a lecture sheila and i attended recently, at the university of vermont, titled it’s a stretch: is connective tissue the link to yoga’s benefits? -

this lecture led directly to a merging of my long-standing idea, that some poses with names like “cobra” might be better named closer to their more probable origin, people – with some developmental data presented at that lecture -

from which this poem emerged ;-)

*

longer than most my poems (though not all, like “when it ended” written in ’81) – my goal was to see if i recognized this one pose, from beginning to present, in some form or other, in my daily life

sheila and i have much thanks for her cheerful presence in class -

and for letting us use her to “decorate” our article ;-)

hopefully in the future we may have the opportunity of interview linda, and see what impact yoga and fitness have had on her life and daily activities

Three Class Premise, Revisited

Review

i wrote, in the beginning section, three class premise, “the challenge has been, to find the format with enough time to leisurely present and have a group of de-conditioned or beginning people, experience the possibility of integrating and seeing the links between yoga, fitness, and other exercises”

and i mentioned that “there’s a series of fitness ideas i like to work into the yoga classes” -

including the use of visualization, breathing, and feeling how a range of motion feels differently, and similarly, in differing modes of movement (yoga, elastic bands, aerobic dance) -

including having a sequence that covers stretching, strength, and cardio work

having the class experience integrating and seeing the links between yoga and fitness and other exercises, wasn’t as difficult a challenge as i’d feared, and most everyone “accepted” that there’s connections, without any kind of difficulty or resistance that either or any kind of particular movement or benefit to our bodies, is “only” possible from one or the other disciplines

the fitness ideas, likewise, were often welcome and beneficial towards the goal of wellness for oneself

*

Continuity of Effort

most welcome of all though, was the ability and experience of having a sequence of related classes, spread evenly throughout the week, with days in-between and the weekend for recovery or cross-training

most of the folk in our current class choose to walk quite a bit, though this will be more of a challenge as the weather steadily moves toward the winter

being house-bound for days may highlight the need even more to develop a home practice

*

Recognition, Teaching Those in Front of Me

what i hadn’t expected, was accepting where my class participants were, in terms of ability, where they needed to begin from, and how much and how quickly they could progress toward their particular fullness of wellness

my own accepting of the people in front of us each day, for three times a week, has lead to the decision to go completely chair based, at least for now

***

What’s Changed

Hands to the Heart, Linda Hartwell

Hands to the Heart, Linda Hartwell

Intro

most of all, is my own perception of the folk in front of me

the current class can do some mat work, some standing weight work, and some standing aerobic work

they are willing, they are dogged and will push themselves to their limit

and that’s good, to a point -

the class is so determined, what with constantly being fed fitness info on how bone growth is believed to be being encouraged by the quantity and quality of their movements, in any of the exercises, whether yoga, weights, or even line dance – that they do what we all tend to do at times -

push too hard too soon, without adequate recovery, and get burned out or too sore

in my first article on a sequence of classes as a series, i mentioned “i’ve sometimes thought i’d gotten around recovery, but really only delayed it” with a link to an article i have, on the need for recovery -

these good folk were even trying to get around needing to give themselves time for recovery, they were plowing right through it! ;-)

which re-emphasized to my wife and myself one of the fundamental driving reasons we have gone into learning and teaching about fitness :

all the things about getting & staying fit we never heard nor told enough about!

recovery is just one of those; we like sharing fitness tips in our classes ;-)

*

Chair Bases Classes

the answer was provided by the class members themselves -

as the time spent doing exercise increased from our ten-minute starting block, our class initially continued to relish their improvements in their ability to sustain a pose, or weight sequence, or aerobic routine -

but more and more frequently would reach for one of the near-by chairs we always have in class, and clearly exhausted with effort, set themselves down, catch their strength, then continue with the class work while in the chair -

once one person acknowledged to themself they needed to use a chair, within minutes the other class members gave themselves the same permission

there was clearly no sense of pretense or copping out, this was a desired preference -

and it allowed them to express their desire to continue improving their fitness

these folks internal wisdom was telling us what we need to do -

provide more chair time, and we did

the result has been a much more enthusiastic looking-forward-to by the class to each day’s fitness work

*

will we still do some mat or standing work? yes, but on their timetable

the smiles of accomplishment and well being engendered and internalized are too significant to ignore the benefits of their preference

besides, as i’ve mentioned in my review of Stronger Seniors’ yoga dvd, chair routines are no wimpy work, both sheila and i gladly use them as recovery cross-training between our own yoga, jazzercise, or zumba sets ;-)

*

Zumba’s Sentao in the Wings

i’d be remiss if i didn’t also mention the impact knowing zumba is preparing a specialty certification of chair-based zumba, tentatively, i believe, called sentao, which is spanish for seated

it’ll be interesting to learn more about this new program, who it’s targeting, etc

as i learn more info on this, i’ll be sure and let people know

*

What About Line Dance?

it’s interesting that the ladies in our classes want to do line dance, but they say it’s too hard after our friday aerobic chair class, and want to know if they can do some line dance after our chair based yoga class ;-)

why yes! of course!

***

What’s the Same

Swan Dive Forward Bend (enroute), Linda Hartwell

Swan Dive Forward Bend (enroute), Linda Hartwell

Breath Work

some things not only have remained the same, but have even been enhanced

all our classes begin with three yogic breathing exercises, and are strongly looked forward to

we’ve even been able, at the class members’ request, to now advance the third breathing exercise, a modified fire breath sequence sheila and i learned in a silversneakers yoga instructor’s class, to a short full fire breath set

now that’s playing fire with fire! ;-)

*

AFAA Fitness Guidelines

afaa, as well as other national fitness certifying bodies like acsm and ace, has always emphasized a continuity of doable effort

a nice article i found via a google search, from “workouts for you“, says :

“Frequency. Consider how much time each week you truly will devote to this workout. Be realistic. There’s no purpose in setting expectations so high that you likely will fail. Remember, the ACSM guidelines are 3-5 times per week, so a good start would be three days.”

being realistic about how much can be done, especially when first beginning or resuming a workout routine, is part of why we like to build our classes with ten minute work out sets

*

SilverSneakers MSROM as a Core Class

msrom (muscle strength range of motion, affectionately called miss rom by the silversneaker folk) is the core required course from silversneakers to be able to teach in their sponsored classes at y’s and fitness centers around the country

at our first class, sheila and i had expected that cardio work would be the primary concern for most seniors, but were taught that, due to frailty and loss of muscle mass and inactivity, strengthening was considered the first thing to emphasize

though our own classes first started with yoga stretching and strengthening, we did find the class responded with most need-recognition to the weights chair class before they did the aerobics chair class

silversneakers also taught us that, developing stronger muscles for daily living, not only helped minimize injuries and falls, but also helped the body create more demand for oxygen intake to fuel those muscles, and from that, aerobic cardio work became more doable

interesting huh? ;-)

*

Nancy Adler’s (Flying Yogini) Blog Post – “Between the Lines”

finally, in a post that reminded me of my own post on teaching limitations, but in her usual entertaining and easy to understand manner, nancy at her site, flying yogini, had a nice post entitled, “between the lines” :

“draw a line right where your feet are at this moment. Then take the biggest step you can and draw a line where you arrive..That space you just created is your reach: the amazing vastness within which you move and that which needs to be appreciated…

“Step back and look at what you just marked: those lines you drew are not boundaries but the arms that hold in the greatness of who you are 99.9% of the time. They gather up the breath, the space, the wonder and the gifts that you offer to others and yourself….”

what she says fits so nicely with what i feel is the essence of accepting how much good a person can do in chair work

while my own article on limitations spoke to finding awareness in accepting and working within one’s limitations, nancy asserts a great way to find those limits of awareness, and then enjoy the heck out of those limitations, celebrate the huge middle core of ourselves

the “edges” will still always be there to “play” with when one is ready and wanting to…

so, whether because of age, injury, illness, or simple inactivity, chair work then, is an opportunity to go at one’s pace within a boundary that allows one to “recover” without having to give up your seat to the big show…a healthier life ;-)

take your seat ahead of time, a front row seat to your own health and enjoyment

and when you’re ready, hey, then stand up (for yourself) ;-)

***

Final Thoughts

Experiment

in my initial article on teaching a sequence of yoga classes as a series, i wrote, “this is an experiment worth working with”

it still holds true -

sheila and i have learned much the past year and a half -

much that explained what we’d been doing, right or incorrectly -

much that we didn’t even realize to begin with that we needed to learn -

and much that we know we’ll only learn as we continue to both practice, and teach…

*

it’s a grand experiment -

maybe as grand as life itself ;-) learning what works, with whom, and when…

***

Late Breaking News Added

our class location business, the fitness center downtown, is located the first level below a two story borders bookstore in downtown burlington

because the borders stores nationwide have closed, the owner of the fitness center where we teach, has notified us that her lease on the fitness location has not been renewed past the end of this month

at this time we are viewing continuing our 3 set sequence in a private setting for our core group

as this firms up next month, we’ll be sure to post an update

How We Escaped the Texas Heat Wave of 2011, We Moved ;-)

***

Intro

after experiencing both an earthquake and a hurricane this past week here in new england, i figured this would be as good a time as any to declare a new beginning, in this, my third of my series of texas to vermont posts ;-)

unlike my preparations and transition articles, where i saw where i was and how things were changing in mine and sheila’s life, the material of our new beginning is only now beginning to show itself more fully

i’d expected that the new beginning would simply be a setting up of new classes, and start again -

but it’s been much much more…

***

New Stuff

Videos

Sheila & Adan in "Pause" video 1

Sheila & Adan in "Pause" video 1

oh boy, never would i have imagined that i’d make a solo music-dance video, and that sheila and i would then follow that with one of us together -

much less to submit to a zumba contest ;-)

the learning curve, just for these basic creations, was fairly steep for me, but in time, these’ll get easier, and more fun stuff should begin to show up, gradually ;-)

*

Zumba®

sheila and i are in process of learning, creating, and practicing enough routines to eventually offer a zumba gold express class

we are also looking fwd to a future specialty zumba is preparing, currently being called “sentao”

sentao means seated in spanish, and a fully functional chair class is something our main target group (seniors, de-conditioned adults, folks coming back from illness or injury or inactivity) needs very much

i’ve mentioned in various posts how chair work is good in so many ways, even very fit individuals -

it’s great as a recovery routine -

and as something to learn to share with someone one cares for but, needs “company” to feel comfortable doing an exercise

the awareness and body-mind connection engendered by yoga, i’ve found, helps tremendously in learning new ways to move, and being more expressive – so we see a nice synergy here

*

Line Dance

the same type of synergy and continuity of motion and awareness exists in enjoying doing line dance

the (usually) repetitive, more melodic moving and breathing patterns in line dance are, i’ve felt, even more quickly enhanced by yogic breathing exercises and poses

because of the smaller amount of choreography involved, and the smaller range of motion (rom) usually involved, more seniors seem to bridge the pose work of yoga to movement to music

for the same reasons involving choreography, sheila and i feel line dance will probably be our first aerobic-dance class we’ll feature to go with our yoga classes, and will be an extension of the sequence of classes we currently offer at the fitness center downtown in burlington

the line dance class, like our projected zumba gold class, is being planned as an express class, approx 30 minutes

we’ll of course post an article (and more) when that comes about ;-)

*

Sequence Classes

we’ve been fortunate to develop a series of classes that offer a progressive sequence of activity and awareness, from very basic gentle longer held yoga poses, to chair based functional fitness work, to aerobic dance basics

all the classes begin with three yogic breath exercises, to promote a fuller calming breath and a stronger core

both our zumba express and line dance classes will also include one or two short yogic breathing exercises, plus a warmup and cooldown

all these components, breath work, warmups, and cooldowns, are too important and too beneficial not to include -

as i expressed in “teaching limitations is teaching awareness (a beginner’s view)” -

“from the start of my yoga-adan blog, i began my earliest posts with the intent to present and demonstrate the disarmingly simple idea that :

each person is unique, yet similar to other people”

that idea has only strengthened over time…

*

Vermont

being in burlington, and vermont in general, has so far been a real treat, a very new treat, for me

even sheila, born and raised here, a graduate of the university of vermont, feels “almost” new here – she has spent the last 30+ years in texas ;-)

the terrain and the climate are an incredible new experience (beyond visiting for a week or so)

coming from the texas gulf coastal plain and even from the hill country of central texas, this is much more varied in terrain, and unbelievably cooler!

*

what hasn’t been as new, is the type of people here in vermont -

they are as close to what i consider texans as any place i’ve been -

very independent, proud of their history, and yet collective in spirit

during the recent impact from hurricane irene, the local and state news sources provided the kind of care and newscasting any community could hope for

without the following consistent twitter contributions, following the state’s impact and response to the storm would have been nearly impossible

@keithmontpVT - @Seven_Days - @vermontweather

my deep and sincere thanks to all three…

*

there’s a growth in the integration of my interests in yoga, fitness, and the arts, that i believe directly benefits from the energy of the land and the people of vermont

*

Art Hop

My Art Hop Px Pic 1

My Art Hop Px Pic 1

art hop!

though i didn’t have new art (vermont art) to bring art hop last week, the venue is new, very new, to me

hugely spread out over the south end of burlington

it feels, when sheila & i attended it last year when we visited her brother, like a combination of the ruckus-ness of the westheimer arts festival of the 80′s in houston, melded to any two days of sxsw in austin nowadays -

that’s saying a lot of good things ’bout art hop ;-)

***

Video from Lake Champlain Vermont

sheila and i quickly caught sight of several 1/2 price and 2 for 1 offering companies here (as in texas), jumpon-it and livingsocial

when $7 tickets for a northern lights 1 1/2 hr sightseeing tour on lake champlain came up, we grabbed them, and i was able to shoot a bit of what we saw

the video is very experimental / learning-curve for me

so my apologies for the lack of polish ;-)

no original audio – ‘cept for a chuckle at the end of a surprise cameo by sheila ;-)

but did put in some soundtrack from some selections that imovie provided

i also played with various styles and types and durations of captions

so kinda a hodge podge finger painting like mud paddy cakes kind of video ;-) fun!

*

i’ve created a clickable link on the video image, but just in case, below the image, is the link for copy / paste

did i mention i’m still sliding ’round the learning curve? ;-)

one of the sights on the video, is of rock point, of which i did a painting back in the 80′s

sheila’s dad had requested it, and had it for many years before he passed away

today we have it hanging in a great spot in our dining room

the tour above provided commentary and information about the lake and surrounding landmarks -

evidently, the forestry around rock point is original to the time of first settlement, and has been kept from being harvested

the land is owned by the episcopalian diocese of vermont, and provides free passes for entry to the park there – “though donations are greatly appreciated ;-) fair enough!

New Future Plans

Ebooks

ahhh, another new technology i’m looking into ;-)

my first ebooks planned, at this point, will be of my original poetry

i’ll still post poems online, though, with commentary, and with nearly 1000 poems between sheila & myself, i could post one a week for 20 years, and still not be fully online!

what this means is, waiting for a subject collection, rather than the ebook, will be a hopefully pleasant process, but also a long one – something i kinda like myself anyways ;-)

so the ebook will provide a subject collection right away

but this is going to take time

the format to successfully upload onto platforms, like the kindle, requires a shift in how to create page breaks, an index, etc

*

the ebooks planned will have the poems presented by subject matter, and i will have more info in future posts regarding which subjects will be first, how many titles will be included, and what sub-topic-headings might be included

additionally, one or more features would be included not available or appropriate for the blog, and better presented via the ebook

*

some sites i’ve been getting what appears to be useful info about this are :

one spoon at a time, tristan higbee, and threepress consulting

all are new to me, but again, seem very useful so far

*

Online Studies

this is more vague in my mind than the ebooks project, but something that keeps coming to mind when i’m in a held pose, or moving in a particularly enjoyable aerobic dance step

my son has suggested several instructional ideas that have promise

but i know less about how to develop this than the idea before or that follows, so currently i feel this is further down the learning curve, and thus the time-curve, than some of the other projects

time, though, as usual, will tell – this seed need more time yet in the ground ;-)

*

Website

Battery Park Burlington, Vermont Lake View

*

first and most importantly, no changes in current content or availability would or will change

second, i have no ads, visible or hidden, affiliate or prepaid, anywhere on my site  [1]

“if” and when that changes, i will be letting everyone know, ahead of time…

and still, as per my first point, no content would change

i would not and will not charge for articles

or poems i choose to post

or images of art work

or photos

nor my fabulous yak yak commentaries ;-)

*

plus, if i decided to have some affiliate ads, i would never email them to anyone

the ads would only be on a site page, and be fully appropriate for the topic

an example would be ad to amazon for topic related books etc

*

both roseanne at it’s all yoga baby, and nancy at flying yogini, have written about this, moving to or having a blog format/host that allows and enables more creative freedom, including the ability to have appropriate ads and/or affiliate links

integrity is number one with both the folk above on their sites, giving me positive examples of generating income on their sites

also my previous art site had google ads, and i didn’t have any problem with the ad types

so a site with even more control over which type ads, and for what type product or person or company, would be a fairly natural, even welcome, extension for me

*

as nancy has blogged about, she experienced transition pains in moving from an ad free dot com address, to that of a more creative-allowing dot org home

that awareness is, for now, keeping me from adding video and other features to my current dot com site; new video, as it comes out (beginning with my very beginner feature on our boat trip on lake champlain above) i’ll probably post on youtube

audio would be interesting to play with too

so one day… ;-)

*

Meanwhile

my attention must remain on continuing to learn, continuing to present as best of material i can understand and present that integrates having fun and staying healthy via yoga, fitness, and the arts

that, after all, is what my life is about ;-)

it’s what i think i model…

***

Final Thoughts

Adan Lerma

My Integration of Yoga, Fitness, and the Arts is a Great Unknown

my integration-effort to understand and experience the underlying oneness i’ve always sensed in yoga, fitness activities, and the arts, began simply and easily enough

i’d write about yoga, and it’d easily remind me of something similar in aerobic dance movement, or painting, or poetry, or writing, or music – you get the idea ;-)

obviously i’m leading up to saying it’s no longer as easy a process as i once believed -

not because it’s harder to see or feel or sense the connections…

but because the connections have become so dense!

the pathways of discovery are everywhere

they lead me down shortcuts

across new main roads

deeper into openings

of surprise sunlight

i no longer know where i’ll end up

or, more accurately, think i know where the road curves

*

what is fiddling with video splicing into my ideas ?

how does that affect teaching poses in class ?

when are brush strokes and touch adjustments alike ?

why does the sound of words on paper feel like breath on hands upon the keyboard ?

am i listening to the murmurs of caring i am hearing?

*

my mind and heart together know the map

but life is new everyday

new places, new roads, new rivers, will be explored

some updates will map instantly

others, not so quickly ;-)

*

Biggest Surprise – Continuity in Vermont

i expected a lot of unexpected surprises in moving to vermont

i’d visited a bit, here and there, for a week or two, throughout the years since i met sheila

intellectually, i knew the air would be drier (most the time)

and cooler ;-)

that the land would rise and fall more continually, at times abruptly

hills would be small mountains back in my part of texas

and i knew experiencing this would still be…new

rumpled land tossed across yards and streets like morning blankets left unmade til evening

the big trees would hold the wind and shake themselves with it in a yogic-fire breath of release

i haven’t even made it out of summer yet!

what will my first full autumn colors bring to my heart’s eyes ?

winters ice and sand-dunes of snow ?

i expect all that -

my surprise, is how texan the people of vermont are

and how vermonty my texanness is

staunch in freedom

free in fairness

valuing

wealth in people

*

there’s a continuity with my kind of people -

i should’ve known, with a wife from vermont ;-)

*

Yoga 2.0 – “Threads of Yoga : a Remix”

special thanks to carol horton for her shared link on facebook ;-)

threads of yoga, a remix, from the folk at yoga 2.0, Matthew Remski and Scott Petrie, is the kind of contemporary re-look at enduring ancient thought that greatly appeals to me

i, literally, don’t know if i agree with all these guys have come up with – i say literally ’cause i’m not completely familiar with their line of thought -

a remix, as per the authors’ words, differs from a translation :

“The purpose of a remix is equal parts homage, adventure, reclamation, and pleasure. It collects the raw beats and hooks of the past and brands them, transparently, with the pulse of the present…

“In the yoga 2.0 idiom, this pulse says a few key things:

    • relationship is more important than private bliss,
    • metaphysics distracts from presence,
    • consciousness is evolving new questions, and –
    • yoga is always changing, because its practitioners are”

the quality of their continuity of effort will probably keep me returning to their line of thought

*

renewed continuity

*

i’ve always been aware of, and been good, with connections

seeing continuities, similarities, attachments

yoga has helped me refine this

sometimes with my own brain-smile humor ;-)

heart-bone is connected to the mind-bone is connected to the ankle-balance-bone is connected to the core-bone is connected to my art-bone is connected to my word-bone

yes, it was time for a new beginning ;-)

From the Beginning

zumba video submission

from the beginning of beginning yoga-adan, i’ve been intent on integrating my life long interests – art, dance, music, poetry, writing, fitness, spiritual and ethical issues, and of course relationships

i know, some people, quite earnestly and of fullest integrity research and motive, don’t believe that the “secrets” of life can be found in relationships, only within oneself

i disagree -

though the oneness within oneself and its tie to whatever it is god is, and the oneness with another and that tie to god is, may differ, i’ve never shook the feeling they are much more similar than different ;-)

art, dance, music, poetry, writing, fitness, plus spiritual and ethical issues offer, i believe, simultaneous lines within oneself and to others, with both lines straight shots to what it is god is – and i’m still guessing that’s something good ;-)

*

In the Moment

this week marks a discernible shift and, i believe, advance toward, not really a goal, but more like a, reunion -

a re-integration; more than “just” an integration…

my yoga has held firm in beloved long held poses – as has my enduring satisfaction of dance aerobics in jazzercise, zumba, & the occasional going out ;-)

poetry, as my readers know, dates back, in recorded form, to the beginning of the 80′s

playing music’s been an active part of me since my trumpet days in 6th grade, art since 2nd grade (painting with crayons to classical music), and fitness since before i knew that running and jumping and throwing balls and racing bikes along alleys and through trails along the bayous would one day become fitness

yoga, i’ve learned, and come to believe, began before my first breath, as i related in my commentary to my poem, “music”

this week, my musicality begins to become more joined to yoga via my dance

this week, i allow myself to be seen in a video submitted to zumba

this week, i don’t hide my goofiness (i think i’m funny ;-) )

this week, my public dance joins my private yoga -

both in intent, and self promise of approach…

eventually, i don’t know when exactly, i don’t know how exactly – i’ll create a movement with my poses that satisfies some union of the two, yet lets each remain distinct as desired and needed

yoga and movement and movement-yoga can each have their “space” within me

this is something i have full faith in, even without knowing how…

*

External Push

i’d been planning the shoot (angles, costume, choreography) and working the editing (learning to use imovie) for this video submission for about a month, but knew i’d come across an article that’d nail what i felt when it came time to post my video with zumba on facebook

recovering yogi, a fun irreverent yoga site supplied the piece

really one of my favorite articles ever from them -

“confessions of a recovering flowtard”

it’s a first person account by suzanne morrison of her book about her trip to india nearly a decade ago, along with her relationships to her teachers, etc

the book itself has, i believe, an unfortunate title, as many people who’d enjoy the story will assume, as i did, that it was more of the usual blah-blah, probably better depicted in “enlighten up!” on dvd

three previous articles, including an interview, about suzanne and her book, slowly mellowed me out where i at least could enjoy anticipating a possible movie of the book ;-)

but her own first hand account, wow, what naturalness and down to earth vibes, yea, real vibes that run like little refreshing currents off the page -

authenticity and humanity ran plush -

“Within weeks of signing over my life savings for a month-long pass to my new studio, I became addicted to the flow. Flow. You know, the sun salutation on crack…

“So naturally I did it for half a decade longer, until I finished writing Yoga Bitch and got accidentally enlightened…

“I finally broke into the safe room in my brain where I store my ego”

but i still want a movie ;-)

depending on your view of my video, i either looked prepared or not even close ;-)

i practiced a short while (15-30 min) each day for about two weeks, developing the routine, getting ideas while moving, then getting more and more used to the music changes and inflections

zumba, in their workshops, includes teaching a music awareness based on what you hear and feel, rather than a 32 count sequence – so choreography is taught a bit differently from regular dance aerobics

afaa, for instance, has a great workshop specifically focussed on using the 32 count method

both methods are valid, so despite pros and cons, i don’t see competing formats, but rather, complimentary opportunities

i spent a bit of time making varying hash marks to denote music changes, then went back and noted the time change within the song and the amt of time spent in each segment

from there i could see how many repeating segments i had, plus how many “open-to-interpretation” sections i might use

i “acted out” then wrote down the possible sequences, and from there it was all practice (rehearsal), letting the “doing” tell me how and what to keep and change

it was an exercise in listening to my body, using my  intuition, responding, and trusting…

the rest is, not notorious, but now part of my history, never-the-less ;-)

*

My Personal View of Zumba as an Organization

the song, “pause” was the required song from zumba to do a video for submission

this seems to be a standard way of promoting an event, as they recently did the same thing using a differing song that people could make videos to for submission

tell the truth, i’m kinda looking fwd to the next song ;-) maybe a change of pace? something more melodic and smooth? ;-) how ’bout one of those hot latina ladies currently on the scene!

anyways ;-)

zumba is an interesting organization, having exploded on the scene worldwide in a relatively short time – understandable, with the music and moves and latin party scene feel

but my wife and i took the workshops and trainings for another very important reason – for us

there’s an encouragement and allowance for anyone desiring to teach, to learn a basic level of skill, and from there, begin…

the learning’s not expected to stop; afaa or other fitness certification is encouraged, and several national fitness associations, like afaa, offer a substantional discount on workshops if a person is a zin member of zumba

in addition, each person is encouraged to find their own “flavor” that makes the music and movement work for them

this is huge!

it is not simply an item of enticement, it’s a major component of what i feel zumba is as an organization :

immense individuality within a large framework to work within

almost sounds yogic ;-)

*

Personal Issues

i had a strong sense of embarrassment and shyness to overcome, and sheila helped tremendously with her patient re-shoots, costume suggestions, and (of course) comb-overs ;-)

staring at one’s aged self move to music can be a sobering experience, and this wasn’t close to being an exception…

but i want other seniors and re-conditioning folk to know, i do yoga, i do art, i dance, and i smile (even if goofily)

i didn’t get this way overnight, and i haven’t always been this way – i was nearly 40 lbs heavier only a few years ago, and was so for nearly a decade

the process, for me, of having lost my fitness, and regaining it, was a slow process both ways…

*

Yoga Prep

so i took a deep breath, many deep breaths ;-) and took the digital leap

the video is entitled “senior pause”   [1]  because i wanted to say, upfront, i’m not trying to be 20 years old, or even 40, just me, nearly 61 years old, but still able to move and enjoy movement and music

and quite frankly, though i’ve always been relatively fluid, yoga has definitely made me more relaxed, more able to feel and sense the music and my abilities on any given day

not perfectly so, but much more so…

*

Yoga in the Listening

the song “pause” would not have been my choice without the video requirement -

i lean toward more melodic or pop beat type songs -

but listening to the rhythms and inflections of “pause” with an open concentration, allowing the music to move within me, i gained an appreciation for the nuances, cadences, and humor in the song

this happened more readily via a more focussed awareness i acutely recognized as applied from yoga…

i also happened to catch an interview with the creator of “pause,” pitbull on kathie lee and hoda this summer -

his relaxed humor plus his speaking of cuban immigrants and his gratefulness for the opportunities offered in america, helped me sense the artist & person in the music better  [2]

*

regarding the lyrics, well, ok, the most they might’ve applied to me was many decades ago ;-)

*

Yoga in the Moves

obviously it’s only segments, moments, certain moves, that reminded me directly of yoga, at least as i expressed myself in the video

things like the chest openers (with a slight back bend) -

a moving warrior 2 modification of the lateral ssd’s (single-single-and-a-double’s)

the concept of a pause, for breath and reset

and i have no problem also recognizing a more relaxed breath in my movement, with the benefit of a stronger core  [3]

there’s continuity i believe, in how all peoples around the world celebrate movement

practicing and doing this video only reinforces my belief

This Week’s Follow-Up Blog Posts

this week, rather than posting a poem or other art related piece, then my article, i’ve posted my article first, and now will follow with several related poems, one each day beginning tomorrow, for three days straight

from 1994 :

“Band”

“Drill Team”

“Little Dancer”

the links to the poems should be active once they’re posted

and of course i’ll be yakking my commentary and seeing what’s what ;-)

Final Thoughts

*

bottomline(s) :

i know i don’t need to rush to some sort of “realization” -

once one improves one’s breath, it’s time to just breathe…

i actually want to enjoy the journey…

*

i want to let-happen how dance will merge with yoga…slowly…tip-toe-together, if need be, as it will be -

because that’s how it feels best right now…

it won’t be a flowtard ;-) and it won’t be a dance form with yoga, but more, i sense, yoga in a new dance form, one that fits me…

i’m looking forward to what it’ll be and how it’ll feel ;-)

Intro

Ten Minute Deposit #1

Ten Minute Deposit #1, Original Photography Adan Lerma

my revision history for my blog shows i began an initial draft with an idea for this article back in late may – why so long to get written?

well ;-) i loved the idea, immediately, that 1 ten minute set of activity, could generate health benefits, and 3 or more, might mean fitness benefits

i say “activity” because afaa, in their text, “personal fitness training, theory and practice” has differentiated physical activity and exercise thus -

“The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) differentiates physical activity from exercise and defines physical activity as ‘bodily movement that is produced by the contraction of skeletal muscle and that substantially increases energy expenditure’”

while exercise itself is defined as

“Exercise is defined as “planned, structured, and repetitive bodily movement done to improve or maintain one or more components of physical fitness” (American College of Sports Medicine, 2006)”

activity is closer to being more active in daily living activities (adls) such as walking, gardening, washing a car, carrying groceries

which of course, pre-supposes the person has the stamina and strength for being able to do the things most of do each day, something not always taken into consideration for sedentary individuals, esp those that are either elderly, recovering from illness or injury, or both

but it still seemed too good to be true, just put in 10 minutes a day? for a minimum?

what’s the catch?

deborah dunham, in an excellent article over at blisstree, “it’s time to quit lowering the bar” also took exception, saying,

“Twenty one minutes a day of exercise is not a lot. In fact, I don’t think it’s nearly enough

“I learned making exercise easier and less time-consuming won’t help people become more fit. It does the opposite….”

and she has some darn good points to back her up, including experience…

so what is the catch?

***

The Catch

the “catch” is as with movement and exercise, further defining -

ten minutes for whom?

an article linked to by ms dunham above, “some exercise is better than none for lowering heart disease risk,” says,

“people who did less than the recommended 150 minutes per week also had lowered risk of heart disease compared with their sedentary counterparts”

and what these “people” did, as per the article, was exercise

so there is some expectation of an activity beyond that normally done

and that is regular, planned, and meant to improve “one or more components of physical fitness”  [1]

with yoga, an example might be the difference of when i do a ten minute set or more that includes forward bends, vs reaching down for something i drop during the day

or, the process of sitting down to watch dr oz with my wife, vs a set that includes chair pose, utkatasana

now using the remote for the tv, haven’t thought of pose for that yet, though some of the mudras might work ;-)

sheila likes the book, “mudras, yoga in your hands”

***

Ten Minute Deposit #2

Ten Minute Deposit #2, Original Photography Adan Lerma

The Save (Benefit)

that still leaves room for the ubber-beginner or beginning recovering person, to do most any “activity,” or movement, and benefit

afaa, in the same fitness text noted above, recognizing such, adds,

“initial low-to-moderate levels of ‘activity’ may enhance adherence with sedentary individuals”

good news for anyone looking to start feeling better!

further good news, i believe, is over-exertion is not necessary to start being healthier

and yoga, as advertised, is generally not taught in a manner to demand or expect or teach a person to over-exert

part of the attraction of yoga, for me, is the opportunity to develop a more serene more peaceful more harmonious manner of getting and staying fit

***

Substantiation

Google Search

further interesting leads indicating the value of at least ten minutes of exercise can be found via a google search of “benefit of 10 minutes of exercise”

entries from the search include links to the washingtonpost, usatoday, and webmd

*

My Own Experience

one of my most convincing, to myself, unintended proofs i have available to myself from my own personal experience, is the fact that, since 2004 or so, after returning to fitness-effort via jazzercise in 2001 (via my wife sheila’s encouragement), i then proceeded to, almost daily, to this day, do one of denise austin’s ten minute dvd segments, her yoga stretch routine packed with poses and stretched with commonsense

i use the sequence to this day, at least several times a week

i didn’t know about ten minute theories then

but it sure has worked ;-)

*

Ten Minute Yoga Super Sets via Sadie Nardini

recently, gaiam featured an article by sadie nardini, packed with fitness info and photos, on the value of a ten minute super sets

though these suggested poses are a bit beyond what i normally do ;-) sadie’s suggestion of using a ten minute superset is a great idea

more info on supersets is here

Ten Minutes – Circumstantial Evidence

seems there’s good reason circumstantial evidence is usually objected to on tv courtroom shows!

so this section should be taken with a dose of non-sodium doubt ;-)

but does make for good food for thought!

*

the number ten, as in the theme of today’s article, ten minutes, seems interwoven into our daily habits, our bodies, and history

with a hat-tip to sheila for some of the ideas ;-) here’s a smattering :

* ten toes and fingers

* ten minute notations on most clocks

* the saying “count to ten!”

* ten commandments

* field marker increments on a football field (ten yard line)

* top ten on david letterman

* countdown from ten for a launch from nasa

* if you’re a “ten” you’re at your best (ala bo derek)

* “just lose ten” from dr oz

* give me ten! – a per a push-up command

and from the world of dance and movement, eric franklin, in his book, “dynamic alignment through imagery” has this bit of research that’s interesting :

“an experiment at the university of california at irvine suggests that listening to 10 minutes of Mozart piano music improves intelligence for a short period thereafter….”

mozart i can kinda understand ;-) but again, why ten minutes?

well, i’m gonna count to ten then finish up my post today!

Final Thought

Providing an Environment Where Wellness is a Choice

though i firmly believe that, ultimately, wellness is a choice -

i also believe that helping provide a psychological and physical environment, that allows and encourages a person to both, feel they can do ten minutes of exercise (without injury), and also feel it is worth the effort (has benefits), is a doable accepted proven idea -

for when we’re well, when we’re tired, when we hurt, even for when we thrive ;-)

namaste – con dios – god be with you

***

footnotes

[1]  a google search for the 9 components of fitness gave me many variations, of from 7 to 10 components, but not 9 ;-)

afaa, in their personal fitness training, theory and practice book, with excerpts featured on their online personal trainer prep course, lists 4 (some say five) health related components, then 5 they consider skill related components of physical fitness

the links in the paragraphs above take you to sites that discuss one of each of the type components

current theory and practice, seems to indicate that a ten minute session of activity, will benefit the health related components

the same current state of knowledge indicates that 3 or ten minutes sets, in any order or combination, in a single day, start to benefit fitness or skill related components

Awareness & Creativity, A Starting Point

Awareness & Creativity, A Starting Point, Original Digital Art Adan Lerma

*

we all know about creativity, and we’ve all heard about awareness, and a lot of us are learning about fitness adaptation, where the body becomes accustomed to a level of exertion, so what’s the big deal?

well, how ’bout : lineage, continuity, connectivity

mind-body-fitness-yoga : interplay – with “play” being operative!

it’s good to know that creativity isn’t just something fun ;-) or frustrating

that creativity isn’t something that just happens when you make something arty

and awareness isn’t just something that happens when we realize we are aware of something

both awareness and creativity can, at times, be a choice

***

Creativity and Awareness, Counters to Adaptation in Fitness

Awareness, Varying the Form of the Moment

it is said, i believe, in science, and in psychology, that an awareness of an event, alters that event, even if only at a micro level

*

Awareness & Creativity, Form One

Awareness & Creativity, Form One, Original Digital Art Adan Lerma

*

being, or becoming aware, of a portion of ourselves, in a moment in time, forces us to :

either accept and (hopefully) breathe through the pull or stretch or pain or pleasure we feel during a pose -

thus actually extending the boundary of adaptation by our body to the same pose; re-adapting the body to a new endurance level

kinda like road work on the path of our muscle memories - moving the “road ends” signs a little further out the path ;-)

or,

change that pull or stretch or pain or pleasure, in any direction we choose

part of what i like to call, our yoga loophole  ;-)

nicole fleetwood, in her article on magazine of yoga, “work the pose: courage, embodiment and daily life” puts it this way,

“Working the pose brought me into an awareness of my wrestling with time – struggling with past and then anticipating the future..Working the pose was an opportunity not only to observe but also to embody time passing in the present moment.”

essentially, we are time…

and our passage in space, or awareness in it, offers us a creative opportunity to alter, day by day, moment by moment, our body’s adaptation to what has passed before  [1]

*

Creativity, From Awareness

though fitness adaptation is invaluable for internalizing specific muscles and movement patterns for a specific purpose, things we want to be able to do correctly efficiently and unobtrusively (walking, running, breathing, etc), specificity enables us to focus on areas needing further developement, or correction (throwing a curve ball, learning a fun dance step, breathing, etc) -

*

Awareness & Creativity, Form Two

Awareness & Creativity, Form Two, Original Digital Art Adan Lerma

*

in yoga, my yoga i should say, using held poses and movements between poses, plus movement within poses, is something i tend to see as gestalt endeavor, meant to benefit my mind-body connection, and, possibly (hopefully) give me clues to existence – why am i here? why are we here? and does it matter, beyond that we are here?

personally, i don’t believe adherence to any system, yogic or otherwise, is necessary to sometimes hear whatever wisdom may be within us (though i’m open to picking up whatever i might can learn from “most” anyone) ;-)

that said, in a very real sense, whatever point i may be at, in any moment in time, is a point of adaptation, by my body, my mind-body connection, for me, right now

and if yoga, barring the need for specific restorative stretching or strengthening, is a gestalt game in experience, then most anything i do that varies a routine, held or moving, is a challenge to my level of fitness adaptation at that moment in time

even if the challenge is teeny tiny ;-)

and that said, awareness, as pointed out above, and more strongly so, creativity, as a response to adaptation by my body, is my next level of engagement with myself

awareness, at some level, i believe, engenders creativity

awareness is the ripple, creativity is the wave

probably two parts of one inner flow

subjective, yes, but…

it’s interesting that even within scientific discussion, we can find, from performbetterdotcom, a statement like [ please note, this link will not work for me on my proof check, so the link for performbetterdotcom is to a google search that shows the clickable link as the top entry ]  :

“Any pre-planned PD [ periodization model ] scheme is affected by subjective and objective feedback obtained from the athlete’s current state…”

hmmmmm ;-)

*

Creativity as a Form of Periodization

periodization is a method of training thought to be helpful in combating excess fitness adaptation, and can be used or viewed linearly or non-linearly

the science of periodization” by jason shea, suggests :

“Although the general loading process (with respect to initial training levels) overtime may be considered linear, variations in volume and intensity that occur within a microcycle exhibit a nonlinear pattern…

“What may be meant by non-linear is not the periodization schedule, but when taken from motor learning context, the variability of practice schedule, otherwise known as undulating or concurrent periodization.”

ace fitness provides numerous suggestions how to incorporate periodization into one’s routines, among them :

  • The number of repetitions per set, or the number of sets of each exercise
  • The amount of resistance used
  • The rest period between sets, exercises or training sessions
  • The order of the exercises, or the types of exercises
  • The speed at which you complete each exercise

for me, ace’s (partial) list above is a veritable gold mine for creativity!

just in regard to the third item, “rest period between sets” -

i can take license with myself, and say, “even professional sports athletes have an off-season!

meaning, modulating training (practice) can include slowing down, or even taking a break…whew!

i know, even sounds almost blasphemous to me ;-)

*

Creativity as Experimentation

*

Awareness & Creativity, Form Three, Original Digital Art Adan Lerma

Awareness & Creativity, Form Three, Original Digital Art Adan Lerma

*

i experiment in my art work

my poems are often feeling-searchings

my photography finds things in layers and versions!

my asanas, ahh my asanas ;-)  it’d be easier to figure when i’m not experimenting!

*

creativity is fun!

and for me, learning why, and how to trigger creativity, and use it, doesn’t take away from it ;-)

but how would one, unaccustomed to so-called creative work “get” creative?

experimentation is one of the easiest means for me :

i don’t have to know anything about results

i need expect only the unknown -

and just try something…

wiggle a foot, stretch a shoulder, move fuller into my breath, lift a hand, shift a hip, lift a leg -

and see what happens ;-)

repeat it, chunk it, enhance it, soften it, slow it down, run it smooth, make it jumpy, hold it -

september’s issue of yoga journal is what the editor, kaitlin quistgaard, rightly calls, in her editor’s letter, a “special music issue” -

within it, various musician artists are interviewed

among them, alanis morissette, says :

“the impetus to do yoga comes from the same place where my songs are birthed. when i’m writing songs or doing yoga, i’m curious about what’s really going on: what’s happening in my body? what’s happening in my heart? what’s happening in my life? what’s happening in the larger context of the planet? what’s happening in the evolution of consciousness? what’s happening in my knee? It’s all the same muscle of curiosity

“that’s the most powerful quality i bring to my creative process….”

yes, i agree!

be curious…experiment…explore! ;-)

*

Applied Example

a super article, offering a fun example, is jill miller’s article, on gaiam’s site, “how to get out of that pose rut

suggestions she offers include :

“shuffle around your yoga DVD collection” ; yoga cross training, with links to various styles of yoga, and props

also included is a nice sequence of photos illustrating her thoughts via triangle pose, trikonasana -

it’s amazing to see her variations -

my favorite titled pose is “twisted triangle run over by a truck” ;-)

Choices

yesterday’s post, on using a pyramiding technique in yoga, mentioned how we can make choices to increase or decrease the load and thus, the effect, a pose may have on us

today, i suggest, that, though awareness “is” and counters adaptation to some extent, to become more fully whole, and i believe, remain close to that state, we have to decide we want to side-step our body’s natural plateauing of our efforts (adaptation) by :

* activating a creative, even if experimental, pose-choice-modification, while performing a pose for ourselves ;-)

* that this is not only, by definition, creative ;-) but healthy for us!

* and that, even when we choose to plateau and enjoy our fruits for awhile, creative experimentation, is the easiest surest most fun way to put a ripple on the smooth surface of that plateau of fitness

and by recognizing that,

* awareness is an opportunity to acknowledge a state of being, and alter our body’s adaptation to the exertion and capability of doing that pose, by :

** either maintaining the pose beyond the current state of adaptation (some might say byond boredom)

or

** creating a nuance of adjustment, of any degree, and challenging that adaptation that way

*

lineage, continuity, connectivity

science, mind, body, spirit

yoga, fitness, self

*

afaa, and dr john w travis, at wellpeople.com, both agree that wellness is a choice -

and, as discussed previously, i believe yoga and wellness are of a family

awareness and creativity, like wellness in general, are choices

choices of enhancement – conscious choices of intent

choices i attempt to make each day, each practice

’cause sometimes i forget ;-)

namaste – con dios – god be with you

Tidbits

tidbits are, by definition, tiny bits

*

a google search indicates further elaboration -

qualities such as “pleasing” and “choice” are mentioned -

“small” and “bite-sized” also come up…

*

thus, this series of tidbits, of small bite-sized posts, are both my choice, and, hopefully, pleasing ;-)

if this tidbit comes from, or leads to, a much longer, more complex post, a link will be provided -

thank you much

Pyramiding

General Definition

Pyramid with Steeple

Pyramiding in Yoga - Photography Adan Lerma

sounds like a noun gone wild ;-)

so what is pyramiding?

well, a google search of “pyramid exercise definition” comes up with, as always, a wealth of possibilities to explore

a simple quick definition, from myfit.ca, appears on the search page itself :

“A pyramid is a load pattern where the load for an exercise starts low then gradually increases with each set”

and a reverse pyramid, as you can guess simply means the opposite, an exercise load starts high then slowly decreases in some pattern

so, what is load, and how is it changing in the pyramid sequence?

*

Load, Within the Pyramid

another google search, for exercise load definition, finds, from knowledge-storage.com :

“Physical exercise key parametres are its intensity, duration and frequency which together define volume of a training load. Each of these parametres plays an independent role in definition of training efficacy, their interrelation and mutual influence however are not less important”

key, to me, is that all three components, intensity duration and frequency, are evidently independent variables, yet “their interrelation and mutual influence however are not less important

typically, most people will think of either increasing, or decreasing, weight amounts, to increase or decrease load

*

Applying Concept of Portability

as per my post last week, “my tree (pose) needs prop(ping) – integrating yoga & fitness” i wrote of the concept of portability, which i had seen on ray long’s daily bandha site

Pyramid with Steeple

Pyramiding in Yoga - Photography, Adan Lerma

i spoke of how i thought i might could apply it across various ideas to help me understand, and use, the way i am able (and unable) to do tree pose, vrksasana

here, my idea is to simply show that the same process might be applied to both a yoga pose, and a sequence of pose movements

this is not new, dancers often apply this idea in developing choreography

what i do think is often missed, is the opportunity to, as in my tree-prop-pose post above, use that bit of knowledge to give ourselves credit for doing good for ourselves

in this case, with yoga, knowingly varying the triad of load factors, intensity duration or frequency, to increase or lessen the load i am experiencing doing a pose, or sequence of that pose, means :

* i can intentionally benefit from :

** needing to decrease my exertion level (for whatever reason)

** increase my exertion level to push my edge

* i can create a repeat sequence of a pose ahead of time

* i can create my forward pyramid or reverse pyramid on the fly (knowing i am adjusting myself, in the moment, in a manner that shifts me gradually into or out of the pose)

* know i benefit from either mode of pyramiding i do, forward or reverse

* can create my pyramid by :

** increasing or decreasing my intensity (degree of grounding, isometric focus, degree of “push” into the pose, or speed of the flow)

** altering the duration (time or number of breaths held)

** or changing frequency (the number of times i do the pose)

* i can create multiple sets, each with a pyramid within them, plus pyramid the set sequence itself

***

Pyramiding Possibilities in Yoga

Pyramid with Steeple

Pyramiding in Yoga - Photography Adan Lerma

Possible Applications

obviously, doing a pose, and holding that pose a varied amount of time, in a sequence of say, three, is one possibility

i could increase or decrease a physical component for downdog, adho mukha svanasana - such as the amount of time or number of breaths i hold downdog

i can also add or subtract :

* visualization in a pose

* a chant or audible during the pose

* props, in general, including the use of elastic bands

*

Actual Example

an example i’ve used, that pyramids visualization, within a pose movement, is in “opening a view of gratitude

the breath count was also extended, pyramided, during/within the pyramided visualization sequence

it was a fun sequence to do, and look forward to trying more of this in the future

***

Final Thoughts

though my example above, regarding opening a view of gratitude, has lots and lots of benefits, the benefit i can add today, as touched on earlier in the article, is knowingly applying the concept of pyramiding in my practice

the more i become aware of how and why i’m doing and benefiting from what i do in yoga or dance or meditation, or most any other activity of being human -

the more human i feel myself to be…

***

Intro

Commonality

writing this article and the subject of the article are sharing something in common, the need for time for the merging of ideas and recognitions to develop

*

The Question, and Short Answer

why, i asked myself, am i able to do tree, for a short time, in either my jazzercise or zumba class, but not so easily, in my yoga routine?

because in the former two, i wear shoes, and in the latter, i don’t!

shoulda been self-obvious beyond the purely descriptive -

but then, that’s part of why, for me, it’s a process ;-)

*

Merging

this article is about the merging of bits of memories and theories, each finding enough fit with each other, to let me know something about my challenge balancing myself in tree pose (vrksasana)

writing this article became about not being able to write it, til i’d merged enough ideas of their lineage, within my own work, and thus, how that is satisfying my need to integrate fitness and yoga in my life

it seems both happen in fits of intuitive ahas! , after i’ve had tasty bits of knowledge and experience

the ground of my mind and heart has to be tilled just right, to grow the ideas and realizations that will sprout in this heated of most heated summers!

and of course, thankfully, some seeds grow easier and in less prepared soil, than others ;-)

Memory Bits – The Pieces That Found Each Other

Personal

* running barefoot as a child, like a deer with endless grace and power

* jumping into a ditch with the aim to land on a ball and bounce up and out and onto the road – and twisting my ankle, giving it a memory groove i still cope with

* dashing through tall coastal grasses that used to be common in houston, even in neighborhoods, til i stuck my foot, got an infection, and had to have what appeared to me then as a HUGE needle and tetanus shot ;-)

* reading and hearing stories of american indian children, who could grip any surface, rock or wet or uneven, with feet like fingers

* learning of how putting shoes on people used to being barefoot creates a difficult balance-learning curve

* finding and realizing i needed the right shoes to jog in a straight line

* shocked i couldn’t use the same style shoe in jazzercise

* amazed what split-sole – could even be called split-soul!  - shoes did for spinning turning moves in zumba classes

Tree Pose with Support Sandals, Modification

Tree Pose with Support Sandals, Modification

* finding “guy” style sandals that felt and looked good to me, letting my feet breathe and move almost “as if” barefoot, but with support i’d come to depend on

* surprised how, despite relatively flat feet, how less flat my feet really are vs solid support shoes, ie, watch-out! barefoot yoga poses! i might be swaying my tree, as my mind finds new grooves of proprioception ;-)

*

Fitness

slowly, as i prepared for this article, random bits of fitness info strung itself together :

* “balancing freedom and restraint” – from ray long, on his daily bandha site

“Knowledge of the body shows us where to expand and where to restrict movement. It also allows us to design a practice to fit our individual needs. That’s why working with a modified version of a particular pose is not a compromise—it’s accepting constraints. I don’t abandon a beneficial asana simply because it’s difficult. Rather, I use awareness of my limitations as a guide for determining how to work in the pose…”

“Since we also benefit from preparing the body for a pose, the journey itself becomes the reward….”

* concept of portability

“Another way to validate a theory is with a concept known as portability. In general, something that works in one lab should work in another (or it is suspect). What does this have to do with yoga? Sound biomechanical theories, such asPNF and reciprocal inhibition, can be incorporated into whatever style you practice and transported across muscle groups as well. On a smaller scale, something that expands the chest in one pose should work to enable a deeper breath in another pose.”

* interval / intermittent training

Intermittent Training is appealing because it offers rest as a part of the exercise. You get exercise credit for the resting time too. It is a great way for someone to begin exercise who has been inactive. It is not as intimidating.”

and -

1-10 intensity :

“is a completely personal scale depending on your own fitness levels and the type of interval training…

“For example a seasoned athlete may be training on improving his speed work, the sprint lasts for 15 seconds and his ‘10’ may be a flat-out sprint with the athlete going as fast as he or she can…

“Another example would be someone who has not exercised in a while decides to do intervals while walking; a 1 minute walk at a brisk pace may leave the person completely out of breath. This would be their 10.”

*

Blog Bursts

other’s blogs

it’s always amazing to me how bits of blog posts find themselves fitted into my thinking, it’s very encouraging about how people as a group, humanity, can create a type of synergistic plus!

* “shame-free yoga: yoga for your body” – on curvyyoga.com

obviously there “should” be no shame if one can’t put the sole of one foot all the way up the inside leg of the other leg, shouldn’t be…

Tree Pose with Sandals, Modification

Tree Pose with Sandals, Modification

but it happens; we get embarrassed or feel inadequate, and ashamed, because we can’t do “what’s expected”

i don’t always respond this way, but sometimes…

and this article does a great job of addressing some of those feelings in what i feel is one of the best articles i’ve seen on the subject – from a personal viewpoint, yet informatively clear

* “slow down” – on flyingyogini.org

it’s not much surprise to me, that both the two ladies that each run their own site (curvyyoga and flyingyogini) also run (sponsor?) the teachasana site, there’s a true kindredness that appeals to me from them

what this particular article says that appeals to me for my post today, is, “I am so busy and on the run that I cannot appreciate what the movement is bringing to me.”

kinda like an awareness of moments of unawareness ;-)

my own blog

even from within my own blog, i now find material i’m glad i can reference back to, for me! ;-)

* “i slept like a log, uh, tree (pose)

i must have a propensity for tree pose, cause i discovered i sleep that way (part of the time i assume) too!

if leaning against a wall is considered a common modification as needed, i can personally recommend this too – i guess i could call it, savasana-tree-mod ;-) (ideal for turning and twisting and flexing)

* “teaching yoga limitations is teaching awareness (a beginner’s view)

probably my gestation post leading to this post, where i lay out how needing to do/accept/use limitations (props) generates greater awareness on many levels, and, thus is a smart thing to do

this post today then, is an elaboration and integration from all-points-universe, why limitations can be a smart thing to embrace

* “muscle memory – a tidbit post # 5

muscle memory is also a precursor to this article, in that it also merges fitness, blog, and personal information, into an expanded view of what muscle memory means, in a good way (not merely as a restraint on further fitness enhancement due to physical adaptation)

info about muscle memory, thus now becomes a building block for me to my thoughts about why i do tree better in one type class than another, and how that differential can not only be useful, but good, overall

i wonder if that’s an underlying energy behind many things, like re-cycling ;-) things thought useless find themselves not only useful, but needed!

***

So What Does This Mean? – The Puzzle Picture

Simple Answer

i expected to have the same balance and control barefoot that i have with what i’ve worn daily since i was a small child, shoes -

and that gives rise to all the answer-bits below, that i’ve come to see, so far ;-)

*

Patience – Huh?

these pieces, bits of blogs and essays and memories, had to have time to find how they’d fit, to answer my original question: why can i do tree so much better in one style class, than another?

at least, to find the answer, in the sorta coherent ;-) manner i’ve tried to present here

i knew, instinctively, and in a practical way, that shoes made a difference -

but i wasn’t giving myself leeway, or credit, or compassion, for using two distinctly different, if related, structured tools – my feet “bare”, and my feet “shod” – to do the same task

in this case, my, still rooting, tree pose, vrksasana ;-)  [1]

*

Summary Details

learning is a process – i knew using shoes was easier for me in any dance class i did, that used tree pose as part of a cool-down routine, but i hadn’t tied all the following (from above) together to :

1) know why using or not using shoes was significant -

at least at a level that explained both the difficulty of unlearning old behavior (muscle memory) and learning new behavior (practicing and creating new neural/musculature patterns) -

ie, let the concept of portability apply itself in my own experience

Tree Pose with Multi-Use Tennis Shoes

Tree Pose with Multi-Use Tennis Shoes

2) to use the differences to my advantage

3) to realize i benefit both by

a) practicing bare foot (and teaching my feet to re-feel the earth) and

b) practicing with shoes (and gaining strength and balance from “within” my limitation)

Tree Pose Bare Feet

Tree Pose Bare Feet

4) slow down and enjoy both, my limitations of needing shoes, and my challenge of gaining bare-feet balance

5) to realize my increased exertion-learning level when bare-foot, is at my upper range, and thus good for me

6) and that an intermittent foot up/foot down learning-process for tree pose, is a sort of interval training, not a shameful inability, and thus, is also good for me

7) to accept that my shoe-based steadier tree pose continues to allow me to feel balanced and grounded, the good of which is not diminished by using the props that are my shoes

8) to remember, that new muscle memories are being created when i practice tree pose with bare feet, while also gaining strength and balance and confidence practicing tree pose with my shoes

9) that i can develop my range of adaptability, by embracing being able to do both modes

Final Thoughts

“Yoga balances freedom and restraint…” – ray long

“During and after the event, be sure to appreciate the abundance in your life. You have strength, wisdom, and a support structure that allows you to take the time to deepen your practice and further your education. What a blessing!” – via teachasana, by sage roundtree

*

being lucky, how lucky we are to have such benefits from the challenge of our limitations

not saying i want too much of a challenge, or limitations, but…

barefoot to shoes to barefoot to choosing?

i’m willing to handle that ;-)

maybe that way, the little boy that ran like he thought he was a barefoot buck deer in an enchanted woods, and the young man steady in his properly chosen athletic shoes ;-) , can stand side by side, with a wink from one to the other ;-)

teaching a sequence of yoga classes as a series, a beginner’s view

Facebook

***

Intro

last week we finally got our projected class schedule up and running in our new home of burlington, vermont – much thanks to the fitness center downtown

envisioned was a sequence of classes available throughout the week, each good as a stand-alone, yet beneficial if taken sequentially

the concept is essentially to more firmly integrate fitness and yoga, especially in a manner that allows a person to enjoy getting fit, encourages a person to want to be and stay fit, and is doable ;-)

***

Three Class Premise

[ 032212 - this is a sample image included in an in-progress ebook of one year of images on yoga-adan ]

Sequence of Florals

Sequence of Florals, Original Photography Adan Lerma

the challenge has been, to find the format with enough time to leisurely present and have a group of de-conditioned or beginning people, experience the possibility of integrating and seeing the links between yoga, fitness, and other exercises

one of my class descriptions in-progress that my wife likes, says,

“The yoga experience is extended by the occasional inclusion of other fitness elements, such as zumba, dance, elastic bands, and weights, for the purpose of helping each person experience the continuity of human movement in various activities. Extended movement work will then be woven back into basic yoga poses”

this also fulfills something seldom spoken of for teachers, that i myself am personally interested in and enjoy all the activities described above

and when making a living is as important as the content of one’s classes, and often is, this isn’t always possible, but i’ll address the issue of finding meaning in seemingly unrelated unappealing movement activities in a future post, ie, i’m gonna have to think about it, but not right now ;-)

*

though not essential, i am fortunate to currently be able to present the three classes in our sequence at the same time at the same location each mid-morning (great time for seniors), m-w-f

thus a day in-between each session, plus a weekend recovery time

can multiple locations be used? absolutely!

can the days be different? of course!

would a workshop work? yes!

*

though there’s a series of fitness ideas i like to work into the yoga classes, and they normally take weeks and even months to present in a way they’re more likely to be internalized and integrated into adl’s (activities of daily living) - a multi-day workshop, with full or 3/4 days, would also work in a more condensed format

it would give a good grounding if done right

*

so for now, we’re taking our single class a week sequence, and seeing how it’ll bloom in this new format

as marjorie, the owner of the fitness center sheila and i will present our classes at says, these are really building block classes, for anyone

***

The Classes

Class One -

Sequence Segment 1

Sequence Segment 1, Original Photography Adan Lerma

a very basic yoga class, emphasizing breathing and just a few poses per session

our website class description

For anyone with little or no basic yoga experience, or needing to begin their first steps into fitness. Very slowly paced.

Postures, breathing, and basic fitness tips mixed into a true beginner’s learning experience.

No headstands, no pretzels please ;-)

our extended class description for handouts flyers etc

A basic beginner’s class for anyone wanting to slowly start a fitness program.

Exercise is experienced in ten minute segments, with each class have one or more exercise segments. Time before, between, and after the ten minute segments is used to learn basic fitness and wellness tips. A gentle warmup and cooldown is included.

Anyone is welcome to participate, and chair modifications are also available. Each person will be encouraged to find their own range of motion, ease of movement, and fullness of breath. Care for easing into fitness at your own pace is emphasized.

Enjoy learning about yoga, stretching, balance, aerobics, and weights. All in short easy to manage separate ten minute sequences.

Husband and wife, Adan and Sheila, both in their 60′s, certified by AFAA in group fitness, look forward to meeting you.

*

our wed and fri classes had begun late june, but because of the long weekend for the 4th of july, we began our mon am class only last week

the satisfaction of having the time to tread as slowly as the class required, explaining stopping starting demo’ing doing, all was a distinct pleasure

*

Class Two -

Sequence Segment 2

Sequence Segment 2, Original Photography Adan Lerma

fully chair based / assisted; great for anyone needing or wanting a low-t0-no impact class, or, being able to show someone else this great alternate way to get started or stay active; combines yoga and functional fitness

our website class description

Chair based aerobic and strength exercise routines, set in two or more ten minute segments, with basic fitness information discussed between sets.

Session is extended with inclusion of basic gentle yoga chair-based poses and breathing.

our extended class description for handouts flyers etc

Gentle functional fitness exercises for an enhanced quality of living are presented in chair and chair assisted format by AFAA Group Fitness certified instructors, husband and wife seniors, Adan and Sheila Lerma.

Exercise segments are presented segments of ten minutes or more, divided by discussion of basic fitness information and review of the exercises presented.

Included in class are alternating segments of yoga, aerobics, weights or elastic bands, stretching, and balance work. A warmup and cooldown is included, often woven into the initial and final segments.

Routines are extended with inclusions of gentle breathing exercises.

Adan and Sheila welcome anyone of any age to attend and enjoy the class within their own range of motion.

*

an la times article on muscle soreness (doms) recently posted on the fitness center downtown’s facebook pg, does a nice job of pointing out many of things we try to point out in class to our participants, such as hydration, snacks after exercise, warm-up & cool-down, and recovery

and recovery is almost a forgotten variable

i’ve sometimes thought i’d gotten around recovery, but really only delayed it ;-)

one of our ideas, among several, in having our chair based class as the middle class of three, was to provide a respite between the start of the week jump in fitness activity, and the end of the week press before the weekend

i’ve often felt and wrote that chair based work was also good for those more active, as a means of staying tone and active, but also allowing time for recovery

when sheila, or myself, is particularly in need of recovery time, but still feel the urge to do something of a workout, a chair based yoga, aerobic, strength, or balance set is all we need

*

Class Three -

Sequence Variation

Sequence Variation, Original Photography Adan Lerma

our extended yoga class that lets a person experience more directly, similarities between yoga and dance or elastic bands or weights

our website class description

Standing, sitting, and mat based gentle slow paced and held yoga postures in segments of ten minutes or more. Basic fitness information is discussed through-out the class period.

Session is extended with occasional use of dance or strength related movements.

All classes begin with a fitness tip and breathing exercise.

our extended class description for handouts flyers etc

Husband and wife seniors, Adan and Sheila Lerma, certified in group fitness by AFAA, welcome anyone interested in gently learning basic yoga poses, mudras, and basic breath work.

The yoga experience is extended by the inclusion of other fitness elements, such as zumba, dance, elastic bands, and weights, for the purpose of helping each person experience the continuity of human movement in various activities. Extended movement work will then be woven back into basic yoga poses.

Class exercise is broken down into ten minute or more segments, with discussion and demonstration of basic fitness and wellness tips. Each person is encouraged to progress and enjoy the class within their own range of motion and exertion. Additionally, a gentle warmup and cooldown is included.

 All ages are welcome.

*

playing with, or experimenting with, or just plain developing ideas for classes for people to enjoy and benefit from, seems to be a necessary creative effort for me -

i have to tinker and try things ;-) you can too, really!

teachasana, a really nice teaching blog from the folks from curvyyoga and flying yogini, had an article recently titled, “so you want to teach in a studio?” , and their idea # 3 was “make a creative offer” with the idea that “There really is no end to possibility.”

if it works, great!

if it doesn’t work, well, for me, i’ll definitely learn something from it ;-)

***

What About My Fitness?

if, as mentioned above, a seldom asked question for a teacher is, “what are you interested in?” , then the question, “so what class do you get your fitness in?” , is, i think, asked even less

Adan Lerma

Adan Lerma

both my wife and i are up-front with our classes that we each enjoy other activities, such as jazzercise, zumba, dance, biking, strength work, and walking also

much of what we do, is at home -

self-practice routines, some to dvds (10 min am denise austin yoga stretch), some to our whim (a few minutes doing this or that), some self-created (sheila has her own “wake up sheila” routine she likes some mornings) -

even preparing a class by running through it several times can be a workout!

plus classes with other instructors, which vary according to availability and our time needs

we both intensely enjoy our jazzercise classes here in burlington -

and i’ve recently gotten to do a nice pm yoga class with katie, who also teaches at the fitness center downtown where we do our own classes

*

obviously i don’t feel i can legitimately get my own workout while teaching my own class, though some days i certainly feel the effort put out ;-)

is it possible to get one’s own workout leading a class?

most people say no, and i “generally” agree -

but as with most (but not all) things, there seem to be exceptions -

maybe leading a class too big to monitor? where one is the role model of the moves being done? and has assistants out in the audience?

i don’t know, but anyone knowing, please feel free to chime in via the comments

*

either way, i do believe it’s vitally important that each of us, teacher or not, maintain involvement with those activities we ourselves find interesting and fun ;-)

***

Final Thoughts

Experiment

this is an experiment worth working with

*

Sequence Variation

Sequence Variation, Original Photography Adan Lerma

*

in league city, at the senior center there, activities are so well built-up, there were many seniors coming to various classes from morning til noon (when lunch is served a few days a week)

here, there’s no built-in flow of participants, yet; but space and time is available to see if the 3x a week format the seniors indicated they wanted, will work

with an opportunity for seniors and others to choose individual classes of interest, or do the entire sequence, by learning basic poses, then feeling how they differ in chair mode, and finishing the week by applying it all in a more active multi-movement style class, we think it will -

even if with a tweaking or two ;-)

*

Serendipity

as so often seems to happen when i prepare a post, the ethers of the internet were alive with related material

the one that struck me strongest, is entitled, “shame-free yoga, yoga for your body” – a guest post by marianne on curvyyoga

i wrote, in part, on their site, in their comments,

“what an exceptionally clear compassionate portrayal of the topic of shame in our bodies, thank you

“minor things i liked (relative to the article), were the inclusion of us guys ;-) ‘a truly safe space for men and women to explore yoga’ , and the references to being too hairy

“i remember when i was 14 wrapping a large beach towel around me to hide my early teen hairyness, and ending up looking like i was walking around naked at the local pig stand drive-in ;-)

“the major thing that appealed to me was the careful development of the concept of accepting ourselves, where we are, as we are, ie, as per above in your article, ‘yoga will meet you AND your body exactly where you are, and that nothing about you needs to be fixed or changed’”

“our very basic gentle yoga class this morning, kept returning to that theme, including for myself, noticing my hairy legs against my mat ;-)  while still retaining the sense of recognizing what each of us chooses to change….”

we want, i think, a normal specialness and respect

unique as a regular course of events

i know i do ;-)

adaptation in yoga fitness and nature, thoughts

Facebook

***

Intro

Why

recently, i posted my comments, with further thoughts, to an article written by j brown on yogadork

the question of adaptation by the body, was brought up, and, in many circles, keeps coming up

ie, we get used to doing what we’re doing physically, especially exercise of any sort, and it becomes easier and more of a maintenance of our fitness than a further enhancement

should we do more reps - should we be pushing or playing our edge?

if so, how, or should we, deal with that?

*

Definition

adaptation, or being adaptable, as teachers, students, or with ourselves, in an emotional or mental or spiritual sense, is a different application and definition of the term, as provided by merrian webster online :

“the act or process of adapting : the state of being adapted

in fitness theory, one’s body adapts to the level of exertion placed upon it, and needs further increases in duration, frequency, or intensity, to feel further benefits in fitness

so, again, how, or should we even, deal with that?

***

Suggestions

i suggest two things :

Re Maintaining

1) maintaining one’s health or fitness status, is not bad!

Adan Lerma

Adan Lerma

depending on my own circumstances, there are times when this is a darn good achievement

depending on any one person’s individual circumstances, this could be necessary, barely doable, or just plain desirable – there should be a time to just enjoy what one has learned, or a level of activity one has gotten to be able to do, i think ;-)

it’s also true, that at some tipping point of aging, doing the same level of exertion will actually, even if slowly so, become harder and harder! thus negating some of having to worry about increasing one’s routines or efforts to gain further fitness

j brown, in his article mentioned above, also addresses whether an unending improvement in one’s fitness is even desirable in yogic terms; it’s a good read

*

Re Enhancing

2) an unending upward curve in improving one’s fitness may not be natural, even if desirable, which i kinda doubt ;-)

for instance, even professional sports athletes have an off-season!

but my role model that seals the deal for me, is nature -

nature might be considered an “all-season” affair, but the way i see it, each season is also another season’s “off” season ;-)

*

Re Nature (and us)

seems kinda obvious now to me, but really hadn’t thought of it much til my wife and i were walking along lake champlain recently

while waiting for summer’s official start in texas is like trying to tell a teenager they’re not in love til it’s officially declared and accepted, summer here in vermont is like pacing oneself through a good breakfast and lunch, accented by a few nutritious snacks, and knowing a treat of a supper’s gonna be ready at 5

Vegetation Along Stone Wall

Vegetation Along Stone Wall, Original Photography Adan Lerma

pour in plenty of rain, and the vermont landscape is lush and bursting with green – beautiful

but i don’t believe nature has any plans at present to continue without pause, covering every spare inch of earth or vermont, with growth

even if growth were unimpeded by hostile temperatures or lack of needed moisture and nutrients, excess growth itself would choke some of its own growth, preventing itself from becoming self-consumed, and destroying itself

space is left for variety (plants & people)

that seems like a good model for myself as well ;-)

***

Following Nature

But…

i suppose it could be argued that the human mind has no “seasons” -

and that neither does the soul; though the latter, my soul, is too unknown in terms of completeness, for me, to say my own soul doesn’t have a seasonal equivalent

but either way, our bodies we must live in, do have their own seasons

we must sleep, we must breathe, we must eat and drink, and we must love and be loved, or die -

recovery, is a human necessity, even if, with cross-training, we can delay the need for a full rest

*

But Nothing!

;-) but…i choose to follow nature – it’s not nice to fool mother nature!

1) i can choose to coast when it’s a treat to enjoy the fruits of achievement

2) i can choose to test my edge, yoga’s loophole, to increase my capacities

3) i can choose to adjust my exertion levels, down-sizing to create a respite cool-front in summer, or revving up a short warm-up in winter

4) i can choose to down-size significantly, for a set period of time, allowing my body to recover, and reverse some of its gain in fitness (knowing the re-fitting into fitness, will generally be much quicker than previously; our muscles and brain and nerves, unless damaged, usually have a memory path to skip along on)

5) i can even choose to exert into a sharp or rounded peak before a significant down-size in exertion

i can choose to create my own seasons

and i can choose to mimic tiny minor seasons each day, each session, each pose, if i wish

it’s a choice, it’s doable, it’s good…

*

even my dear heat-stoked texas will cool eventually ;-) maybe by christmas ;-)

***

tomorrow, i post a new tidbit post in that series, this on muscle memory, extending the thoughts here on adaptation

Tidbits

tidbits are, by definition, tiny bits

*

google search indicates further elaboration -

qualities such as “pleasing” and “choice” are mentioned -

“small” and “bite-sized” also come up…

*

thus, this series of tidbits, of small bite-sized posts, are both my choice, and, hopefully, pleasing ;-)

if this tidbit comes from, or leads to, a much longer, more complex post, a link will be provided, thank you much

Intro

Touch a Stretch

Touch a Stretch

during a nice cool-down the end of our jazzercise class this week, one of those synergistic moments i sometimes get i’ve described in my yoga-to-dance aha moments, happened again, but this time, near the end, while we were stretching, thus, a tidbit ;-)

it may just be me, but i seem to be noticing more attention being made tying yoga and fitness

early this week, my wife and i received our hard copies of afaa’s july/august issue of “american fitness” magazine - it’s brimming over with fitness info of course, including an article titled, “teaching yoga in the fitness realm”

then the next day i see a wall post on gaiam’s facebook page for an article by sadie nardini, “10-minute yoga supersets: better than another hour of yoga

now i won’t get into a thing about whether a ten minute set of yoga is or isn’t better than another your of yoga, that’s such an individual-need thing, i can see liking both with no problem, just depending on my needs at the time (sadie herself suggests alternating the longer and shorter sessions)

what i do like, is this very strong tie of yoga into current fitness theory and practice

toss in the concept of the use of a ten minute block, which i use in my own yoga classes, and i really like this ;-)

footnote # 3 in my article regarding teaching limitations (a beginner’s view), references afaa, plus provides a couple of links for further info on the ten minute fitness concept; just scroll or jump down to the bottom of the article

A Weighted Stretch, as a Tool for Learning

so what struck me, as a really neat awareness-enhancing tool, during a supine full body stretch, is :

* when settled supine along the length of one’s mat, with arms still along each side, using

Touch a Stretch with Weights

weights light for you, and with a rich inhale, slowly raise each arm up over-head, then bring them gently down above your head, resting once again on the floor

* let your motion and the earth’s pull gently join, giving you a greater awareness of your arms’ full body stretch

* once i felt the difference of the added weights’ pull, i released them, and used the now created memory to help me feel a fuller stretch

so simple, no wonder i’d never thought of it before ;-)

Cautionary Suggestions

if an uncomfortable twing or pain is felt, in the shoulders or chest or anywhere else in the body, i would either reduce the weight, or not try this procedure at all

i also wouldn’t cross either weight across my face, but rather follow a parallel line to my shoulders

as an alternative :

i could raise and lower my arms above my head with a lightly stretched elastic band

Touch a Stretch with an Elastic Band

Touch a Stretch with an Elastic Band

though the pull would be more lateral and away from the center of my body, rather than pulling up and lengthening, the new felt resistance still creates more awareness of my arms and shoulders in my stretch

this awakens my perception of my form more -

and further enhances my sense of connectedness

*

Final Thoughts

the use of weights, or an elastic band, are kinda fun, and mix things up a bit, but i enjoy them most as tools for being able to do more without them later!

it means using props, shouldn’t be something to be afraid to use; and should be enjoyed when needed or desired -

and whatever new sense of stretch i gain, is now mine in memory -

in the present ;-)
