my collection of sports poems “10 Sports Lessons I Can Smile at Now” is being featured by “the indie spotlight” whose motto is :

The Indie Spotlight – Where the Independent Author Shines

The Indie Spotlight

what the indie spotlight offers, is a chance to have one’s independent self-published work more widely presented, especially to the growing number of people with ereaders, such as the kindle and nook among others

10 Sports Lessons I Can Smile at Now

a variety of in-depth questions were presented to help the reader know the writer and the work presented a bit better

sports is year round -

and so this lightly humorous look back at my layman’s fun and trials at playing at sports, “10 Sports Lessons I Can Smile at Now” takes a look at baseball, dance, skateboarding, yoga, running, and bicycling

indie spotlight’s submission page provides a downloadable questionnaire, and that can be submitted to one of the founders, gregory bernard banks, a published writer and graphic artist

if you are an “indie” writer, i’d highly recommend this opportunity; it is free, easy, makes one think about one’s work a little more broadly, and is of course potentially good pr

the questions are fairly comprehensive, but easy to follow, and my two previous submissions, one for “poems for lovers loving & being loved” and the other for “101 sports poems“ were presented in a way that showed my work to very nice light

i think it’s also fair to say, the questions helped me clarify, to myself, and my readers, some whys and whats about my creative process, particularly in regard to the book featured, more deeply than i’d realized i would

in the optional samples inclusion ending, i included chapter one, ”Turkey Bike Trot” ;-)

Heads Up on Submission Process Changes

also, and very importantly, the entire submission process and resultant “spotlight” on one’s work, is free – that always helps us new (to the world) writers and artists ;-)

however, due to a recent server crash, greg, one of the co-founders of the indie spotlight, gave a “state of indie spotlight address” saying (my own bolding) :

Ed and I have been truly grateful for all of the tremendous support you have given us, and are very happy to continue providing The Indie Spotlight as a medium to help let the world know about you and your work. But our popularity far exceeded our expectations, and prior to the server crash, we had a very large queue that was continuing to grow by the week. So now that we have this unfortunate opportunity to start over, we will be taking steps to keep the stockpile of submissions under control so that we can best serve you. So submissions are open now until the end of the month of April, and then we will try to have a more definitive submission period schedule set up, which we’ll post on the website.

so, from my view, a total recommendation of the indie spotlight’s services, but with a heads up regarding keeping an eye out for upcoming submission changes after april

i’ve come across work that, because of the in-depth presentation, i probably would not only not known about, but not known to care about

thanks so much, i hope you get to stop by at indie spotlight

sincerely,

adan

dVersepoets Prompt – Open Link Night ~ Week 36

hosted by Claudia Schoenfeld

one of the founders of dversepoets, with brian miller, claudia welcomes us to open link night with a prose-poem of a welcome-prompt :

“I let you in on a little secret.. my fav OLN times are when the doors just open and you have to be careful not to get run over, when poets with ink-smeared hands and sheets of paper wrapped around them spill into the door, try to find a chair, hug, chatter and laugh,  say hello to old friends, welcome newcomers and order their first poetic pint…ahhhh…what a pleasure….”

reading the rest is alone worth the visit to this fine poetry site -

and who knows, you may catch the madness of words that mean more than meant, that flip readers minds into visions within themselves, that conjure up feelings felt once, and now remembered twice…

like sports, you can always come back and try again ;-)

March Madness, The Madness of Sports

sports
unlike wars

is an event
activity

assertiveness

among one’s peers
replaces aggression

ranges, muscle motion
when we feel
tell us how well
we’ve come along
our own fair fitness

the high fly ball
the rolling of the ball
down the alley
the spinning of wheels beneath

our neighbors’ elbows
tickling ribs into playful pain

to
one long held well-breathed yoga pose
on a recycled mat among hundreds by the

if we fall or stumble or ache or break but
can return, we can return -
it’s madness, but
in sports
only our own

obviously, i am taking poetic license, when i say only our own choice can stop us, i don’t mean we could still return to ice skating or other demanding activity, in the same way or right away, if we broke our leg or suffered a stroke

what i do mean though, is we can choose to return if physically able

or we can return to a level of activity within what we are able

if we choose to, because we can choose to do so

should we?

well, for me, that begins to be the inner realm of individual preferences

there are as many sports as people can come up with

even playing with words or images is sport-like

and yoga?

again, for me

there’s a reason, in yoga, it’s called,

playing your edge;-)

dVersepoets Prompt – Open Link Night ~ Week 35

hosted by brian miller

one of the founders of dversepoets, with claudia schoenfeld, brian says this about open link night,

“Welcome to OpenLinkNight!

“What’s that?

“Great question, and if you are just stumbling upon us you are in for a treat. Not because of anything we do but because of you. OpenLinkNight is the poets willing to lay their hearts to the pen, the wind that blows through the doors every week at 3 pm EST and whips into a whirlwind of verse for 33 hours.”

this is, from my experience, a great place to try out your verses, in a community of other poets whose intent is to support, critique, and be respectful – the latter something not always easy to be found ;-)

brian goes on to add,

“OpenLinkNight is all about you. It is about the poets that make this a special place by talking back in the comments, by visiting each other. By interacting.

Interaction is where the magic happens….”

this is often, i’ve found, an active diverse creative group that’s gonna look at your work; i encourage you to give them a try, it’s free ;-)

below is my creative effort of the day for the open link prompt

sports is on my mind, in a large work of poems i recently posted, “101 sports poems,” in a newer sports work in-progress, in the opening of baseball season, the upcoming olympics this summer, and so much more

starting now, of course, is the college playoff mania that stretches to early april

so with that in mind ;-) i give you, my march madness ;-)

***

March Madness

oh sure

we know that

sports includes coaches and

players with less than

stellar lives

like

the rest of humanity

but

march madness

for me

is

the holidays continued

in respectful competition with

oneself and others

the internal edge

of yoga

finds the brittle sharp blade

of interactive

experience chipped

into use

elbows find ribs

they’re not connected to

pain

is as much the sweat of analysis as

it is the beat of your heart

at the same breath

moments

in time

become memories stretched

to decades

while

feelings

of endurance

etch the set of your eyes

the shoulders next to you even

on the long bench

depend

on you too

if there’s ever been moments you’ve

been

most alone

it’s when you realize

you’re part of

the team

101 sports poems – the poems

PRLog (Press Release) - Nov 29, 2011 -
Nearly twenty years of poetry writing is exhibited in the current collection of sports poems in “101 Sports Poems – The Poems.”

Baseball – Basketball – Bicycling – Bowling – Cheerleading – Coaching – Dance – Drill Team – Fishing – Football – Golf – Gymnast – Horse Riding – Hunting – Inspiration – Martial Arts – Running – Soccer – Sports Fan – Swimming – Tennis – Trainer – Volleyball – Wrestling – Yoga & more!

Many of the sports experiences expressed by these poems are the result of direct experiences by the author, Felipe Adan Lerma.  Now older, Adan narrates considerable commentary in the deluxe editions how the poems came to be written.
http://yoga-adan.com/2011/10/05/my-writing-history-the-r …

For the sports fan, or initial reader, “The Poems” edition offers a straight-through reading enjoyment of all the various sports represented.

Some poetry, such as “Sports Fan” is humorous, while others, such as “Cross Country,” are more seriously presented.  After many decades of layman-participatory sports, formally and informally, a wide gamut of feelings are found.

A fully linked index is included in “101 Sports Poems – The Poems” for easy linking to any sports topic or title.

***

Deluxe editions, full size and mine collections, each include Creative Poetry Writing Workbook sections, individual personalizing templates for each poem, plus ample commentary.  Expanded Resource Links to sites of other interests are also included.  “The Poems” edition also contains a substantial links section near the end.

Commentary on the sports poems in these editions posted on Yoga-Adan.com, is different from that detailed in the deluxe editions, but give a good view of the ideas expressed.
The five sports poems, are

“Baseball”
“Drill Team”
“Athletic Training”
“Yoga is a Sport”
“Cross Country”
http://yoga-adan.com/2011/02/11/cross-country-is-it-medi …

***

Specialty deluxe editions, such as the Mini Sports Poetry Volumes 1-9, and the Full Deluxe “101 Sports Poems” edition, are written from the author’s added interests and certifications in yoga and fitness, to that of his studies in the Humanities and arts at the University of Houston.

The poems and commentary are, as Adan says, “Gently infused with yoga and fitness. It’s remarkable how much of what I wrote in the 90s in my poems, is so like what yoga and fitness is all about.”

At the time of first publication, five of nine Mini Deluxe Sports Poetry volumes have been completed, and are also available on Amazon Kindle Books.

Adan’s website maintains a special eBooks page, with a listing of all available titles, with their Press Release and buying links at Amazon Kindle Books and Google Books.

Final Thoughts

reposting one’s press releases is something i used to do on my old art website, mainly just to have a record of them, and it turns out, as per reading i’ve done lately, this is a good idea anyways

i do have a media room now, with info and links to the original press releases, but evidently this is a good thing to have too

like a lot of things in life, probably a good idea to have a backup ;-)

Winning

In the long long course

of a life fully lived,

the process of

the game

of daily doings,

making a living, loving another,

is ample reward onto itself.

But

in the short haul, when

you’re down in the mud, a foot

on your face – on your last strike -

down to your last penny or check

with no credit in sight -

the wind in your face, the seams

pulling apart…well, then -

winning’s a whole

night’s shooting stars

of a lot better.

Final Thoughts

i’ve written another article, also for today, “scarcity and intent in creativity, thoughts” and felt, as the essay is bit involved, the poem would present better on its own page

my bird on a fence photo is used for both postings, and has a much more “involved” meaning once the other article’s also read ;-)

but as with most things, at least when dealing with people, that’s us! there’s more than one interpretation and use for most the things we observe, much as we like to think and feel there’s “only one way”

*

the bird, here, in this instance, in relation to this poem, is simply determining which direction to take, where he’d “win” the most, survival, food, environmental enjoyment

but then, i’m just projecting this onto this cute bird ;-)

i do believe, though, ultimately, there is only one way, only that it’s too big or complex or maybe even holy for us to more than grasp at it, though grasp we must ;-)

if people perish without a dream, there’s no dream, i believe, without the grasping…

and winning the small doings of each day, is huge…

Yoga is a Sport…

Yoga

is a sport

of breaths

on runs and jogs

through trails of forests

rivers and neighborhood

streets lined with lights,

of beating hearts

set to moving feet and

arms arched to music playing

simultaneously inwardly and outwardly,

of lines of sight

from eyes to hands to hearts

of balls hit and tossed and thrown

against backdrops of vectors seen as one

fabric – one web,

of liquid races in the waters

of feet felt along the paths

of whispers

and whistles sung

by the winds and waters

on our runs and swims and dives

deep along the edges of

our comfort zones

as we compete

and play

within

the yogic loophole -

our edge.

Yoga

is the sport within….

© 2011 adam light creations / adan lerma

***

i had some small debate within myself if yoga was a sport or not, intellectually anyways ;-)

in my heart, i knew – i know it is, but differently than maybe first thought so…

*

last week i wrote a review of one woman’s journey from intellectual to emotional understanding / acceptance

this week i have a minor mirror reflection of that same process

how could yoga be a sport!? i asked myself

sportsmanship? i answered

self-sportsmanship?

yes!

i think that’s it… ;-)

not surprising to me to think of “drill team” as a companion poem with “band” for the article on the making of my first music-based video posted monday

cadences, staccato as they are, are a beat, and develop a rhythm…

what was surprising for me, re-reading today’s poem, was how, back in ’94, i was already linking sound (click-click) with movement (step-step) to “breath-like movement”

but knowing what little i know now, and looking back to then, i see yoga and oneness already working its wonders, without need for training or dogma or gurus

amazing what the folk today, including myself, can now learn with qualified conscientious kind instructors who know safety and anatomy as integral parts of yoga, not something apart…

the members of our drill team back then in high school knew this feeling…

Bricks, the Spaces Between the Paths

below is a poem i wrote nearly 17 years ago, “cross country”

i didn’t know what i know now, and all i did was describe what i experienced, occasionally, when i ran what was then a distance for me, several miles, and would now be, a marathan  ;-)

posted on my old art site in 2007, i’ve incuded the short commentary i placed under the poem then

monday, valentines’s day, my wife sheila’s birthday, i’ll post “heart beats”

both poems will, eventually, help me write my next multi-part post, due tuesday: “meditation: am i doing it yet?”

Cross Country

 Pace.

Learning to pace is key.

Letting the thud thump

of one’s feet slip

skip into a heart beat.

Allowing the mind to find the eye’s

range into any distance.

Rough broken edges of rocks

soften.  The round turns of

foliage and trees sharpen.

Green and brown and blue become bound.

One’s view and nature

grow balanced between the

thud thump heart-feet-beat

of one’s breath beginning to

settle easily through and out

the gliding body.

The floating consciousness

breathes lightly through the views.

And the countryside within and without

becomes covered, crossed and claimed

by one heart.  One vision.

though i didn’t go on to become like a devotee of the sport, i touched it enough to see and feel beyond the sweat and ability to eat more than i do now :-)   i saw and felt the world around me, within

i just assumed, when i wrote my post-run post-poem artist’s comment, i was simply taking a mystic stance in the midst of science

so what is the consensus or expert opinion, is “cross country” meditation?

one answer, meant for yoga, but possibly also applicable for me, is from a guest author on the yoga lunchbox:

“Repetitive sequences may look limiting from the outside, but I find them enabling. They are like a container that supports me and continues to expand as I expand. Once I learn a sequence, I do not need to think about what is coming next or what I think I might want to do. My mind becomes more still as I just flow from one posture to the next. Outer structure leads to inner freedom…This is why Ashtanga is often called a moving meditation.”

sounds pretty good to me

but i don’t practice Ashtanga per se, i’m still experimenting…

so when i post my new series, “meditation: am i doing it yet?” next week, i’ll attempt to do so from a post-run post-poem post-artist-only viewpoint  ;-)

will it still qualify as a yogic viewpoint? maybe?

and what might my viewpoint be in 2020? what type of view point could it be?

a nano-point perhaps  ;-)
