“Weather Neighbors”

**

dVersePoets Pub – Stream of Consciousness Prompt -

hosted by Victoria C Slotto

*

stream of consciousness is one of my favorite modes of creativity, and has slowly, over the years, been tempered by some well needed conscious prodding reviewing and revising

so victorias’ suggestion, within her prompt at dVersePoets, is pretty valid, if you have the time and inclination, ie, you might get going and wanna bust through while the busting’s good ;-)

• Review your writing for any connection you can discover between words and phrases and see where your poem will take you.
• Put your work aside for a while before returning to it.

i find, if you do this form of writing enough, you get where you like incorporating and doing some of these ideas

and she has more tips, and examples, and links to the likes of james joyce and virginia woolf, among others

it’s an interesting read of a prompt, highly recommend if you’re curious ;-)

Weather Neighbors

a year ago i woke in texas to this same heat this

afternoon that had burned off a lingering morning northern

chill and find the two thousand miles neighbors each and every

inch along the way should i worry i wondered then forgot should i

fret or celebrate or buy an extra beer here or simply feel myself the

same in place to place adjust the windows with the shades as

the arc of sun boils the west and leaves the rest tonight

in tepid waiting for the cool of dawn i am neighbors

to myself in different lands offering strangers

notice of the dew point’s choke point on

our skin our eyes our way of feeling

something’s “off” something’s

not quite right tonight but

i am neighbors with

myself now and i

know

i know like the folk here

know

this winter past was faux cold and i know the

summer-spring that stings is faux heat

indeed

unless you get hot or cold

easy

then the hotty toddy tea and ice cold beer

beer beer cold beer here

might make us neighbors one more season’s passing

Excerpt from new work, “Four Months of Mornings

**

dVerse Poets Pub : Open Link Night, Week 45, Excerpt from “Four Months Of Mornings”

hosted by Brian Miller

*

this is a new way to post to dVersePoets’ open link night for me

i’m posting a new work, and it’s part of a collection of free verse poetry i have in ebook format

but, i haven’t published it yet ;-) target date is june 4th or soon after

there are several reasons for the delay:

formatting four months of work into one package; cut and paste is just the beginning; various elements need re-configuring, links and new internal table of contents created, and the newer unpublished segments still need re-reading and proofing

the third volume is still under a prior commitment of exclusivity, and is eligible for other publication after june 3rd

and i am wrapping up ebooking (a new word ;-) ) my collections of poetry dating from the early 90s, plus, beginning my first fiction work since the early early 80s

the sample below is my second to last installment on the fourth and last volume in the series

the series itself, four volumes, “A Month of Mornings,” was an experiment; it ended up leading me to realize that my later-in-the-day series, “Everyday Gratitude” encompassed what i was experiencing on waking

but i didn’t organically merged the two thread within for several months

this sample is longish, with most daily morning writings being one to one and a half pages long

volume one in this series, like my other volume ones for my other series of poetry started late last year, is free at participating online outlets ;-)

experimental writing takes many forms and purposes, and in my case, helped me both create and clarify the process of integrating the portions of time in my every day life

it’s been an interesting process ;-)

the time frame for this writing is about mid-april in northern vermont…

**

Volume Four, Day Thirty

huge snow flakes fall in varied fluffs

this morning, the temps hovering

near freezing, but rising into

the low 40s -

should mean no ice

a good thing ;-)

we’re out to the pharmacy

for our lotions and potions

from our dr visits yesterday -

today, too

is my next to last posting in this

my first ever series, a month of mornings

and

a series of months it has been

so much learned from my

wakings and morning

wonderings

i see enough now, in this short time

of who i am, how i awake each

day

to feel i can blend the a.m.

into my day

in “everyday gratitudes”

which

when i began

i didn’t even know

to know

would be a goal and a

good thing to learn…

my days were

still apart -

in

pieces -

with practice, with these

morning musings

i’ve begun to

stitch the

patterns of my days

into one large comforter

large squares puffy with rounded

corners

here and there ;-)

slabs of color next to carousels

swirling to barely-heard

music

it’s been a joy and a privilege to

set words to the sights of suns

rising

to the opening of my eyes

once more on my wife

near by

the light wed to our

windows

my coffee is ready and

my chores and day awaits

though really

it’s already

very much

begun ;-)

“Teaching is Sometimes…” – Original Love Poetry

Sample Poem in “Teachers Students & Education Specialists

**

dVerse Poets Pub : Open Link Night, Week 44

hosted by Joseph Hesch

*

i’m beating the clock by under an hour tonight

so no expanded commentary on the prompt from dVersepoets

which, in itself, is a commentary on what they espouse, all are welcome -

and as the host of the night, joseph hesch, says, “We serve all who enter these virtual doors. And we listen, too…”

in honor of teaching, graduations, and the coming end of school for summer (for some ;-) ) i post a poem from 1997 i still feel as strongly about as when i wrote it ;-)

**

Teaching Is Sometimes…

Teaching,

even when just plain hard as

old wood, is sometimes fun -

… is sometimes exhilarating, new

ideas crackling like fireworks -

… is sometimes a seed forgotten

 but suddenly blooming -

… is sometimes lightning

exposing growth and structure

within the temporary darkness -

… but teaching is never ever never

something away from the

“real world,” but rather

… is sometimes the source

and often the reason

anything is real.

“Diversity” – Original Inspirational Poetry

**

dVerse Poets Pub : Open Link Night, Week 43

hosted by Hedgewitch (Joy Ann Jones)

*

i decided on a poem about diversity, sort of in honor of the dversepoets’ open link night poem prompt, which, this turn ’round, re-caps this fine poets’ site menu of offering each week

the menu of prompts each week, is diverse onto itself, but then, within the recurring motifs, deeper layers of unique divergences open, like glimmers off creases in deep caves lined with precious dusts when light passes over…

more information, in more interesting detail is offered within this week’s prompt, but this is the outline :

On Mondays, the erudite and articulate Chris Galford brings us a look at a different classic poet and poem every week, some familiar, some obscure…

Tuesday’s Open Link Night, where any poet can link any poem on any subject,  is our most poplar feature…

On Thursdays, we alternate two themed link-in spotlights on the craft of poetry…

One is called Form For All, and focuses on the various poetic forms through which we can express ourselves as writers…

The other Thursday attraction is called Meeting the Bar, and is all about the nuts and bolts of writing

Saturdays at the pub starts the weekend off with Poetics, where an alternating team presents various challenges ranging from a word or a concept to specific art or photography…

also amazing, is the diverse links brought up by a simple google search for diversity

nature, itself, must demand it (diversity), as even in-breeding can result in unwelcome results

i would highly encourage anyone interested in creative work, to check out the more detailed prompt above from dVersePoets ;-)

hedgewitch (joy ann jones) then finishes her prompt with a copy of Back Yard by Carl Sandburg, a fine summer read (for those of ya’ll in something south of northern vermont ;-) though we’re ready ;-) )

**

Diversity

yesyesyesyes

nononono

ahhh

to have a break from the routine

yet knowing we

need

the routine

a graceful path with

stone steps along the climb

set at angles asking

for

foot to eye

co-ordination

make a trek a hike

with pauses for

vistas

skies beyond the tree

tops  -

groundings

feet and eyes tracing over

twigs and bits

of moss -

we love the uniformity of a silent wave

of snow

pristine shaped

by billions

of

unique flakes

happy 31st anniversary sheila ;-)

**

below the following poem, is my post for our 30th anniversary last year, on this same date ;-)

sheila and i were one month away from leaving texas for vermont for a bit to be near her family, and to see her home state

we arrived around 5 pm, rented a car, and drove to our new apt, met our landlady for our keys and intros, and walked down the few blocks to church street where the summer’s first festival of jazz was well under way

by the time we were seated out doors under the umbrellas at ken’s pizzas, the cooling dry air felt a bit chilly to us, dropping quickly to near 60, having that morning left houston’s humid nearly 100 degree days ;-)

we still smile remembering the girl taking our order say, “oh it was terrible hot today, hit 90!”

we knew what she meant, but now we really know what she meant ;-)

*

so today, we celebrate not a monumental marker like our 30 year anniversary last year, with a grand family gathering in galveston in perfect 80 degree sunshine, and lots of granddaughters running to and from the pool -

today, the monumental marker is another year, and like the meaning of my recent work of the every-day, this added year, our 31st, is really very much that, a monument in itself, of itself – happy and grateful to have this time…

happy 31st anniversary sheila ;-)

Our 31st Anniversary

*

another year’s gone by and again

so full and yet

still filling with so much

more -

we’ve returned to your growing-up

lands and peoples

walked streets your parents walked when

their whispers were waves of feelings

calling you to leave your wings

and be a baby

for them

we’ve sipped coffee at the deli

they must’ve wandered in

snow stuck to their

boots, flakes

finding

eye-lashes and young necks to melt on -

i’ve walked mountains your father

held your hand on and

talked with you of

how the waterfront has changed since when

your brother was your tag-along

drove bridges you said you’d carried him on your

bicycle

we found new ways to see the summer

felt the fall-ish colors and crispy snows you anew me all new

we came and found continuity in our fitness classes

and soon we’ll discover a new knee for you

a new fit

for our life -

we’ve been in texas and vermont, in

austin galveston houston and burlington

all so completely different in the life they bring

and yet in all the differing climes all the changing skies and

all the ways that summers heat and winters freeze

plus all the ways we age

we’ve always stayed the same

happy 31st anniversary sheila ;-)

i love you ;-)

[ added late 050112 ]

this poem, written the few days leading to today, May 1st, our anniversary, is also being linked to dVersepoets’ OpenLinkNight Week 42 Prompt, hosted by Tashtoo

falling also on may 1st, the prompt is a call “to take May Day 2012 as a day in support of the 99%”

i’m assuming that’s most of us ;-)

tashtoo goes on to write about how important poetry has been in her life, and adds,

“No matter your beliefs, your opinions, your grievances, there is room for your words….”

there is not greater honor of the belief in equality and freedom, i believe, than to encourage all opinions, even those opposed to one’s own

but let us remember, that without substantiation, opinions are just that -

and i believe tashtoo is encouraging of that substantiation and expression by each of us

with that in mind, i feel my tributes this year and last, to my relationship with sheila, carry as much validation of the value of effort and time with another person one cares about, as can be expressed in words and images ;-)

below is last year’s 30th anniversary posting

thanks so much ya’ll ;-)

Intro

The Occasion!

today, may day, is sheila and mine’s 30th anniversary

nearly half our lives already!

*

Preparation

i went back and forth, up and down, around and back, trying to decide how if when i would post about this event

this is what i decided -

since i don’t have enough digital pics to do justice to 30 years i’d only post a few, though one is a compilation of photos i took a photo of!

and, since i have at least four poems, two by each of us, written over the years, about anniversaries, i’d post that, 2 of @ by each of us

the “wedding blessing” would work as well, but it’s already posted ;-)

rather than re-word our orignal poems, especially sheila’s! i’ve opted to just do a short commentary, making them personal, for us…

i hope ya’ll enjoy them as much as we have living and creating them ;-)

***

The Poems

all originals by either myself or sheila

short current anniversary-commentary follow each poem

The Photos

also all original

though the details vary, so the photography-detailing, how i played the edges, ala my post, playing my edge with photography, variations, are in the footnotes

*

Anniversary

Anniversaries are a time

of celebrating and

remembering

all the good times

and good things. Of

rejoicing all the bad

ones overcome.

Only, don’t

let it be

just today.

Help each other

celebrate each other.

Help each other

remember each other.

And help recreate

each other’s tomorrow

today and forever.

© 1994-2011 adam light creations – adan lerma

*

there’s a strong sense of shared-ness and recognition that, even if not necessary, for enlightenment surviving or simply existing, we can help each other

actually, knowing it’s a choice, it means even more i think…

This Anniversary

This anniversary is

different from the others.

Not because it’s so many years -

Not because it marks a milestone –

Not because we’re doing

anything special to celebrate.

This time something

really clicked -

Something we’ve wanted for so long

happened.

Something brought us

the closest we’ve ever been.

Yes, this anniversary

is really “something”.

© 1997-2011 adam light creations / sheila lerma

*

sheila wrote this just because she wanted to

many of our poems we’d sell and personalize in the 90′s, were written in response to requests

this poem was one she said she felt compelled to write, and says she still can’t quite place the words as to why this is so

i’ll take her word for it ;-)

First Anniversary

The vows were spoken,

the bond was made

“only” a year ago.

Since then has come a

unique understanding

that only the two of you

can really know.

Dreams spun together -

Plans forged ahead

on a path that’s just begun.

Looking forward to sharing

many more years of caring

like this very special

Year Number One.

©  1997-2011 adam light creations / sheila lerma

*

sheila did write this poem in response to an occasion, i believe our oldest girl’s first wedding anniversary

yet the sentiments are those i’ve heard her express to me many a time, about us

i think she’s right :

“year number one” and “year number thirty” -

are but number-markings set apart

all else remains the same

the path is always…

just beginning…

Our Anniversary of Meeting

I remember the light

around

and in your eyes.

I remember

the quickened interest

in

my own heart and eye.

And I remember imagining -

in a flash flown by -

remembering this, our first moment,

many many times

in times then still so far off.

And I’ll remember all this

now, at

our anniversary of meeting,

as when those dreams of

future memories

had begun becoming one, like us.

*

yea, i know ;-) not a wedding anniversary writing, but i guess i could argue, when did we become married, spiritually anyways ;-)

and i really did imagine, back then, when i first saw her, her shirt’s laced high collar touching lightly on her neck, auburn light brown hair pulled back gently across her light skin, that i would remember this moment in the future, and remember knowing i would remember then, now

happy 30th anniversary sheila ;-)

footnotes

[1]  a pic we had someone take of us this past nov (2011)

besides cropping, i blurred the whole image, then history brushed our faces back in

most heavy photoshop users know they can adjust brush size via the bracket key “["

but if you don't, and use photoshop a lot, don't feel bad, i only found out a few months ago when i finally got tired of not using a keyboard shortcut, and did a search via photoshop's help search ;-)

this was kinda fun literally playing with edges i brought back into focus

a sharpening swipe on my eyes, and a smudge swipe (or two) on the bags under my eyes, and wallah! got the focus i wanted!

[2]  sheila loves putting together collages of actual printed photos, playing with the selection and arrangement

i took advantage of that and grabbed a nice shot of many of our years together

each photo had its own light/dark balancing, so i did a gestalt that evened most of the darkness from the older pics, then bracketed a dodge brush smaller and larger and back, lightening our faces, followed by swipes with the sponge tool where the lightening made the faces too red

dodging the poster board edges around the various photos gave them a neat spotlight glow i like

i had the distinct sensation of feeling that the photos, with that glow around them, plus the memories and feelings they evoked, were like stars seen at night, twinkles of light pulling at the heart, only this time, i knew why…

[3]  final photo dates back to 1981, or so

i left the old-time glare-glaze on the image, rather than removing it, because i felt it enhanced the sensation of our past

the cigarette was also left in, to show where i’ve come from – 19 years of smoking since a late teen, to finally quitting march 1983 – that story will come ;-)

i marginally saturated the color, sharpened and softened and re-sharpend gestaltly, finishing via a slight pull-back with the fade tool (love that feature)

if ever a doubt what a cutie-pie sheila is, here’s proof ;-)

just match it with the first photo 30 years later!

“Community” – Original Love Poetry

**

dVerse Poets Pub : Open Link Night, Week 41

hosted by Brian Miller

“we all need those connections—that community—whether in time of trial or celebration. That is the essence of OpenLinkNight for me. When I click on your link, I don’t know what to expect, but I open that door…

“When I leave that comment, I don’t know if you need it, or if you will return one to my place, but I open the conversation. Thank you to all those that are building that community here, one conversation at a time….”

*

i myself, have been diving deeply into visual work, fitness classes, and even formatting my first hard copy trade book of one of my ebook poem collections

brian, one of the founders of dversepoets, like one of my daughters, recently took a fun-challenging group of young-uns on one of those i-can’t-believe-i-went-with-them trips, that we old(er) folk sometimes remember better than the kids ;-)

that, those trips we make with our little ones, are among the deepest community we make…

those are a sharing across generations, time, and ages, that sticks like spring pollen on our heart’s memory cells

i didn’t have a specific thing in mind for my poem, other than its title, not a usual pattern for me, but i could feel the swell of feelings, like the way wading in chest high water on flat beaches like galveston feels -

and then one realizes why they’re called swells ;-)

**

Community

fresh off the visual wagon and

onto the sleigh of words

backed-up

laughing and playing like

cars on galveston’s beaches back

in the 60s

radios blaring beach boys and beatles

and

bottles of beer held to the

summer light

no one

thought about

leaving broken glass

sharp edges for tender feet

in the soft sand

*

those times

aren’t

gone

they cycle like the seasons the moon

the earth round the sun

the cry for community was

strong enough

back then

to

drown the worries

it wasn’t the first time

hope sprung

in the

wells of people’s’ eye-hearts

it won’t be the

last -

that, we already know ;-)

joseph provides some interesting commentary of his poetry-process history co-mingled with his friendship with one of dVersepoets’ two founding poets, claudia schoenfeld

included are some thoughts on the value and quality of the online artistic friendships he has enjoyed seeing develop, especially on the thriving poetic site dVerse poets pub has become

i myself was wiggling for a way to showcase an image from a new series i am just starting, “impressions of gratitude” -

the new series should finally allow me, i am hoping, to resume my love of creating impressionist images, in this case via photography and digital enhancement (vs oil painting, which i’ve not abandoned ;-) )

add that i can then add a small verse, and i am close to a joining very dear to my heart

dVerse Poets Poetics Prompt : New View For You

hosted by brian miller, featuring photo prompts from Tracey Grumbach

brian, one of the originators of the dVersepoets site online, had a short intro to this particular prompt, which, considering how long i’ve been battling this congestion/cold/sinus/allergy/yuk feeling, is good timing ;-)

“Tracey hails from Maryland, a former home to me and has received a bit of acclaim for her works as well. Just jump over to her siteto see some more goodness.”

i’m always tempted to use all the images in these prompts, as they’re (for me) the most fun, but i did make a half sensible promise to be more considerate of my time and energy while i’m recovering, so i’ve picked this one image from tracey’s fine work

a glance at her website indicates much more in terms of interesting imagery

i wondered

as i wandered among my

fevered thoughts and chilled beliefs

if

any of this

would matter anyways

a

natural question i assume

then

when i saw the clean

neatly styled carefully parked

red and white new bike

- parked -

without a rider

yet obviously placed there

by someone…

i knew

and

thought about

the

poems and stories

paintings photos and

knick knacks i’d pieced together

over the decades of my lifetime

and knew

someone

would know i’d been here too

dVersepoets Prompt – dVerse Meeting the Bar

hosted by Victoria C. Slotto :

victoria presents one of my most favorite topics, the sense of being in the moment

she begins with a statement i myself feel fully :

“I am not a Buddhist, per se. Aspects of Buddhism, however, have inspired me for many years, in particular, mindfulness meditation….”

then showcases examples of being in the now - snippets of data awash in each of the five senses, followed by a poem by louise hastings illustrating the pull of the seasons in one woman’s now

*

Mindfulness, Heart and Mind

victoria’s excellent intro brought to mind a couple of twangs of my own regarding mindfulness -

one, how often various proponents focus only on the heart and disparage the mind

my own feeling, which i express often here on my site ;-) is that ideally, a blending, almost a respect and compassion, between the two, would be even better

carol horton has one of my favorite articles, regarding right and left brain, which i think equally applies (and which she posted on her site a year to the date tomorrow!)

two, is my idea of how / where creativity takes place; but first, this background material, from victoria :

“the words we commit to paper or hard drive are born in the present moment. In order to create, we need to carve out a place and time of silence. We need to slow down and notice details, to block out distraction, and open up to inspiration. Silence, awareness, focus….”

a problem potentially occurs semantically when silence is interpreted as only being able to be when one is literally alone, with no disturbing sound around -

this problem potentially re-occurs in the final three words “silence, awareness, focus” -

Silence

silence, to me, has meant the silencing of both the mind and the heart

the human heart is wonderful, as is the human mind, and both have shown the capacity for infinite good, and evil – which might well be the definition of being human ;-)

the silencing of both, allows awareness, and with focus, i believe, creates the opening for each person’s best road of approach in that moment, either the mind or the heart, or, in those rare wonderful times, both the mind and the heart

anyway ;-) that’s my theory, and my experience

which, i recognize, doesn’t mean i’m not missing something

Accepting Individuality Within Oneness

but i must work with what i have, believe, and can accomplish

when i’ve sensed this most, are in momentous crowds, and the moments before sleep

weird huh? ;-)

***

Live in the Moment Before I Sleep

the cotton sheets crinkle they’re

so crisp

cool

to my touch

sheila’s asleep ill for

a few days

her breathing’s rough

but her scent is

warm

the bed cool

beneath me as i

slip-pull

into

our bed

sleep is the moment

where one

lives

broadest in time

my slowing breath

a slow bellows

beckons

the past, my slightly hunched

shoulders ease, rest back

upon the soft cover

sighing

i was five then-now the

fever so high angels

swirled above me

aside my

parents praying beside

me

sheila stirs restless resting

uneasy

shhh shhh

my mother laid her hands across my

forehead my dad watching

with softened eyes

shhh shhh

i touch sheila to ease her

sleep-jerky fever

shh shh

the

breath is easier and

darkness comes

wrapped

in light streaked silk

and

morning

comes

after the long moment of night

dVersepoets Prompt – Open Link Night ~ Week 37

hosted by Natasha Head :

natasha’s intro-prompt essay is a nice read into one poet’s sense of the need to create

“At this point in the realm of the real world, I have been put into the position where I am able to live my nightmare…and I’m surviving it. Each punch and kick to the teeth are just poems waiting to be written, and all I have to do is make it to Tuesday where I get to share, to lighten the load and find the inspiration within YOUR words to carry me through.”

i’ve always felt dverse poets pub is one of the more supportive arts sites i’ve come across, maybe the most in terms of poetry itself -

my recent expansions into the digital world only continue to strengthen that belief ;-)

at this late time, to still submit to this installment of open link night, one hundred forty-nine poets have submitted work for their peers to review and enjoy

there’s a level of trust and respect needed, that builds that kind of response, and dVerse poets pub has just that -

below, is my own little bit of experiment, mixing dialog and description, dropping prose into poem, and hinting at atmosphere

should i have added a pinch more adjectives? similes? exposition? an image? imagery? music?

could i have? yes, but should i have?

sometimes the freedom to simply play with a feeling, find an idea, and swatch a few lines, is all i really wanted / needed to do -

this time ;-)

- hmmm, no light bulb -

“their feet must get colder than their

my wife, sniffling from her cold

dVerse Poets Pub Prompt : Patterns Pictures and Poems

hosted by james rainsford

combining words and images, two of my most enduring art loves (two others being dance and music) is one of my favorite creative outlets

james, from the uk, and an elder it appears (from his site) presents just what i needed, an excuse uh, opportunity ;-) to 1) do a photopoem, and 2) use an image i really like, but was probably not gonna use in any of my upcoming photopoem books

i’ve link-marked “photopoem books” for those reading, as a heads up that my newest photopoem book from my “everyday inspirations” is free starting tomorrow, mon-fri, march 26-30, for five days ;-) sneaky huh? ;-)

anyway, james’ intro essay into dversepoets’ prompt, is really interesting

plus, he is a photographer himself

what’s interesting to me, and kinda substantiates what i’ve felt about much of the arts for a long time, is there’s many ways to approach an art, and still “get it right” – since the thing to get right is getting in touch with one self’s own creative mode

james himself likes to create a poem, then search for an image he can capture or use to compliment it :

“I don’t work to a set pattern to create a poem or photo. Mostly the poem comes first, and then I either select an image from my photo library, or occasionally venture out with my camera to try and capture a relevant moment.”

while i like to identify an image, tinker with it to my liking, then let it prompt me for the right words for that moment in me

either works, or both alternately ;-)

like james, i don’t think there’s a set pattern

the patterns are in us, are organic, and like the templates that i think yoga poses are, alter and adjust day to day, as we do, as the poem the image the pose and ourselves, are one piece

a google search continues to bring up interesting ideas about photopoems

here then is my own image and verse

i should add that james does supply some fabulous images that a poet is welcome to use if they don’t have or want to use one of their own

the setting for my image is the waterfront park area in burlington, along lake champlain vermont

thanks ya’ll ;-)

dVersepoets Prompt – Open Link Night ~ Week 36

hosted by Claudia Schoenfeld

one of the founders of dversepoets, with brian miller, claudia welcomes us to open link night with a prose-poem of a welcome-prompt :

“I let you in on a little secret.. my fav OLN times are when the doors just open and you have to be careful not to get run over, when poets with ink-smeared hands and sheets of paper wrapped around them spill into the door, try to find a chair, hug, chatter and laugh,  say hello to old friends, welcome newcomers and order their first poetic pint…ahhhh…what a pleasure….”

reading the rest is alone worth the visit to this fine poetry site -

and who knows, you may catch the madness of words that mean more than meant, that flip readers minds into visions within themselves, that conjure up feelings felt once, and now remembered twice…

like sports, you can always come back and try again ;-)

obviously, i am taking poetic license, when i say only our own choice can stop us, i don’t mean we could still return to ice skating or other demanding activity, in the same way or right away, if we broke our leg or suffered a stroke

what i do mean though, is we can choose to return if physically able

or we can return to a level of activity within what we are able

if we choose to, because we can choose to do so

should we?

well, for me, that begins to be the inner realm of individual preferences

there are as many sports as people can come up with

even playing with words or images is sport-like

and yoga?

again, for me

there’s a reason, in yoga, it’s called,

dVersepoets Prompt – Meeting the Bar: Filling in the Gaps

hosted by charles miller

my originating poem for this poem, is “march madness” written a few days ago

charles posits that (my bolding),

“More modern poets make up for this disjunction between life and poetry by filling their poems with more and more personal, historical, social, or other details. Many poems try to fill in the gaps left by the disjunction between the moment of poetry and real life by providing enough detail to let you know what gave rise to the poem. No doubt, we aren’t talking about causal events like a chemical producing a reaction but cause defined in terms of meaning, not always directly discernible by observers or instruments.”

he gives examples of “more” meaning using work from ts eliot and dante

of the latter, he says,

“You’ll notice that I haven’t used the term commentary for what Dante does in this work. This is because I don’t think he’s doing literary criticism or dissecting his work like a literary critic does. Instead, he’s trying to show us how all the pieces fit together….”

the prompt intro is a richly written piece of interest to most any poet, and the prompt itself is challenging yet intriguing

this then, is my poem about my previous poem about sports and team work and individualism, why i relished celebrating all that is something that’s sometimes thought of as “just playing sports” ;-)

dVersepoets Prompt – Open Link Night ~ Week 35

hosted by brian miller

one of the founders of dversepoets, with claudia schoenfeld, brian says this about open link night,

“Welcome to OpenLinkNight!

“What’s that?

“Great question, and if you are just stumbling upon us you are in for a treat. Not because of anything we do but because of you. OpenLinkNight is the poets willing to lay their hearts to the pen, the wind that blows through the doors every week at 3 pm EST and whips into a whirlwind of verse for 33 hours.”

this is, from my experience, a great place to try out your verses, in a community of other poets whose intent is to support, critique, and be respectful – the latter something not always easy to be found ;-)

brian goes on to add,

“OpenLinkNight is all about you. It is about the poets that make this a special place by talking back in the comments, by visiting each other. By interacting.

Interaction is where the magic happens….”

this is often, i’ve found, an active diverse creative group that’s gonna look at your work; i encourage you to give them a try, it’s free ;-)

below is my creative effort of the day for the open link prompt

sports is on my mind, in a large work of poems i recently posted, “101 sports poems,” in a newer sports work in-progress, in the opening of baseball season, the upcoming olympics this summer, and so much more

starting now, of course, is the college playoff mania that stretches to early april

so with that in mind ;-) i give you, my march madness ;-)

dVersepoets Prompt – Poetics – Poetics 1999

hosted by shawna from rosemarymint

inspired by “a book called The Best American Poetry, edited by David Lehman and Robert Bly” shawna explains that she hadn’t noticed the “1999″ on the book’s cover, in the upper right hand side

understandable, i think ;-)

shawna goes on to ask, what were we doing and thinking and loving or anything ;-) in 1999?

and adds a nice quote of concern from robert bly, this being a short excerpt of that quote, which easily merits a full reading,

“When the irreplaceable flavor of a given decade disappears, our language loses its vigor and becomes merely useful.…”

i won’t try and measure any vigor or descent into “merely useful” my work may have or not have now, but…

thinking back, watching the form and style i used from the early 90s on in my poems, i feel i’ve kept some of both of how i felt and how i expressed it, back then, before i became a young senior ;-)

what has changed, is how and what i’m more aware of, which really makes me wonder what the heck is still on the road ahead!

i’m just gonna go ahead, and assume it’s good ;-)

dVersepoets Prompt – Open Link Night ~ Week 34

hosted by

open link night is a favorite, cause one can write anything, topic wise, within reason i assume ;-)

tonight’s essay by the host at dversepoets pub does talk about the loneliness of a writer’s life, the interior-ness of it, and has some great quotes from hemingway and henry louis mencken

the latter says,

while we are conversing and laughing with ourselves, we manage to shed our loneliness . . . to scatter it as we go along”

while the old man of the sea, adds,

he does his work alone and if he is a good enough writer he must face eternity, or the lack of it, each day.”

so i of course have decided to play both devil’s advocate and confound’er ;-) meaning i meander ’round what “alone” might mean, and if it’s ever really avoidable, even when among everyone else…

it’s a tough question

yoga says we’re all one, yet many schools of yoga say the ego must be dropped behind, along with emotions and thoughts – not too appealing, i thought we were all one ;-)

maybe, we’re meant to transform what we come in contact with, best we can anyways ;-)

so my challenge, was to create something entertaining, spark some interesting imagery, roll some pleasing word-rhythms, and yet intrigue the question of do we really create our best work when most alone, or are we alone anyway, and aloneness is just an excuse…except when we really are alone and must cope with that -

it all confuses me

which is probably as clear as i can be about it!

poetry, at least, can entertain and provide diversions of form and sound and pace and image – we can at least feel good about leaning towards knowing, all along knowing, even sometimes proudly acknowledging, we really don’t know…

but we know we’d be cowards if we didn’t at least try ;-)

so here’s my go -

***

We Write Alone, We Speak Together…

great literature, like
all things moving and
pounding our hearts, like
the rounded moon striking
our earth, changes everything
*
is it truly only possible to create
such impact, alone?
*
are we not alone when we
breathe our own air
among a stadium
of screaming
fellow fans or
among a dance floor of
studied looks from glances
shrouded as distance checks
on tiny turns around the
floor?
*
or
is it degree-of-aloneness like
the size of the moon that
strikes the oceans
making macro-
looks of drops of milk
drops
making crowns when splashed?
*
but what of the Iliad or spoken centuries of
korans and bibles and testaments of
moons striking whole peoples’
dreams of survival
*
were not those words whispered ’round
campfires sized like buildings
warming thousands
not
alone?
*
did the utterances in public minimize
the force on civilizations germinating freedom
in ancient greece or royal rome?
*
or can it be argued, posited, positioned,
speculated, post hoc, someone, a
man, a woman, a child,
first
wrote the words
into the air
alone
*
to be spoken on the ancient widescreen
of burliness and wild hair spun to
whip the air with callings
unconcerned with
aloneness…
*
can we ever not be alone
yet be with one
with
everyone?
*
or
do we really speak in most
aloneness
when we hope
to be with that
someone
always with us when we’re alone…

dVersepoets Prompt – Poetics – Awareness of the Experience

hosted by sheila and walter w smith

i had already told folk i was just too busy to post,  though i did visit and experience some great responses to the prompt on dversepoets today

yet i was able to finish my projects for the coming week, some big chunks of stuff needing getting done in prep -

and though i still have some personal projects that need getting started (much less being getting done ;-) ) i’ve just kept returning to the prompt, one i like so much, becoming aware of one’s personal response to the moment, and in this case particularly, to images

the sets of images i’ll use here, to create a photopoem as i like to call it ;-) are provided by walter, a digital artist who’s variety of texture color tone and degrees of layering-restructuring, is really a delight

i’ve rarely ever used anyone else’s images for my photopoem work, mostly because i feel i won’t have the internal emotional impact of using images i’ve chosen with my own seeing, my own eye, my own desire -

but i felt this was worth the exception, and risk, of just plain falling flat as a dry leaf run over by a semi ;-)

here goes -

***

They Weren’t My Images, I Thought

i didn’t draw my eye to this and capture it like

ice cream melting off a summer cone in texas

hurriedly hungrily reckless to its usefulness or arty-

ness

though once i stopped and sat my mind on it

which is how my heart likes for me to

co-ordinate, behave, myself

and found i agreed to disagree with myself

not wanting to remove pain that taught

me what pain is, learning me to

teach myself the value of

my uncertain future

even if

uncertain mostly to me

anyways

and

gazing on the rolling golden round disrupting

- playfully i decided -

the ruffled purpled oceans flower shells dancing dolphin like

betrayed the first site’s thoughts – confirming my own pit-nicky

bias -

pain remembered is pain honored not forgotten

even winter’s harshest stripes of white whipping cold-welts

passes -

the floral layering leafed with greens carrying scents of seeds

birds gladly drop to earth, the patterned

look -

a washing-machine’s gentle rinse of the tillings the

soul

took uninvited

but accepted under the oval rainbow of the light

wind fluttering waves and spray and wisps

of cotton breathing in the salted air

saving us our moisture

in the needy heat

not forgetting the primal

pain

*

but setting it back wet

into its ocean

i cross the bridge of colors set upon the

the darkness where

in light

all color comes

and

in pigment

all

color

returns

the spectrum playing itself upon the retina’s

of someone else’s eyes

i thought

but i saw them too

the else’s images

they asked me

if i did

really did

remember the pain twisted moments set in muscle

and i said, yes, but more the release and remembrance

of the ocean waters i’d seen before

and more

the ruffled layers with rolling

lavendars

and

more the sign of caution

asking us

if we really truly can remove ourselves from ourselves

no -

i said

and the images were mine….

dVersepoets Prompt – Translucent Poetics: Writing Spoken Words

hosted by claudia schoenfeld and ami mattison

ami, a spoken word poet artist, describes how spoken word poetry differs from traditionally expected written poetry :

excerpt,

“Spoken word is intended for a listening audience. Thus, it must somehow manage to speak itself in a way that makes its various images and metaphors easily apparent, or accessible, to any listener and not necessarily to someone “schooled” in poetry or even spoken word…

“translucency, or poetic transparency is a key element of spoken word poetry….”

ami goes on to of course acknowledge similarities, but then progresses to describe the use of first person narrative to achieve success, ie, communication, with a live audience

as a person who has done a touch of community theatre, and a few years of summer outdoor amphitheater work in galveston, i can relate to how much it must mean to ami to do this type of poetry

maybe one day i’ll merge that old interest of mine with this old interest of mine ;-)

I Spoke My Mind, Kinda

so i said, you gotta be…

and she cut me off

like a third arm

with no sleeve

to fit in

you’d think cause i smiled and

nodded my head she’d

cut me some slack

but all she kept saying was

“you told me you loved her, you

told me you loved her! you’d protect

her!”

i do i did i told her again, again each

time she said “you told me you

loved her!”

how could i tell her her cat and my

cat turned out made for each

other

love ain’t something i plan you know…

Open Link Night

Open Link Night, Week 33 ~ from dVersepoets, hosted by joy ann jones (hedgewitch) is a more than usually welcome prompt for me this week

i’d been debating, whether to, “jump in” with an article on the latest twist of yoga headlines, these from another scorcher from the nytimes, “yoga and sex scandals: no surprise here,” or to instead, do a poem via one of dversepoets’ many fine prompts

open link night, and the recycling of one of my yoga poems, “evolution of a pose,” gave me a chance to merge the two, save some time, and let me go out dinner with my wife for a beautiful sunset here in burlington vermont ;-)

Yoga and Sex

my intent, if i’d done a “pure” yoga article reviewing the hubbub, was to link to the more interesting and comprehensive folk, such as :

yogadork’s “William J Broad on John Friend Scandal: Yoga is a Sex Cult and We’re All Ignorant Minions” -

and carol horton’s “Back to Basics: Yoga as I know it, 101” -

and an article i first saw from nancy alder, and is also linked to by yogadork, “Christopher Wallis addresses “Factual Errors” in NY Times Article: Yoga and Sex Scandals

My Take

my own take is, depending on your view, either too simplistic, or too involved ;-) or maybe just right ;-)

for what it’s worth, this is where i stand regarding yoga

1) my understanding of yoga is, like most things in my life, except for a few constants, an evolving understanding – so i’m open to change, have changed (some), and expect i’ll have a few adjustments still along the way

2) my favorite (short) quote about yoga i’ve seen several times, and saw again today on the mindbodygreen site :

it’s from the dalai lama,

“There is no need for temples, no need for complicated philosophies. My brain and my heart are my temples; my philosophy is kindness.”

3) many of the ideas feelings and precepts in yoga, i learned and heard growing up, so yoga is not a sole depository of human wisdom

4) people argue constantly about something with a big “Y” yoga and a little “y” yoga; i default to dalai’s quote above if you need an authority, i’d still think it’s a needless debate if you don’t ;-)

5) getting rabid about sex not being part of yoga is as wrong as being rabid that it is

sex is part of and responsive to eating breathing sports art dance music literature gazing into your lovers eyes and eating a delicious meal, oops, i’m back to eating, now that’s where there’s no real surprise ;-)

6) arguing about the history of yoga, in detail, is like pointless – we don’t even know if JFK was killed by a lone gunman, or in cahoots with others – generalities is the best we can do

i currently write a daily morning poem, and a later-in-the-day gratitude poem, and when i re-read them, i’m shocked at what i remembered vaguely, and what i didn’t remember in detail at all! – though i know whatever it is that happened, i absorbed

7) my physical and, by unavoidable natural connection, emotional mental health is enhanced by physical activity -

as my emotional and mental health enhances my physical health -

yoga does this, as does dance and music and writing and good company and, oh, yes, eating ;-) eating well anyways ;-)

there’s more, i’m sure, but it’s close to time for my wife and i to go eat, with a great coupon of course ;-) from living social - they don’t pay me to say that, i say it because i am grateful for a decent deal from a company i’ve had fair dealings with several times

just like the yoga ladies i mention above as reference probably don’t always agree with my take on things, but i admire them and what they offer for discourse and pondering

and that’s how i feel about yoga, it doesn’t agree with all of me -

i can’t do headstands, hold myself afloat with one hand, or twist the same both directions, but i admire what it does for me, in my breathing, in my stretching, in its (usual) compassion toward self and others, and its advocation of awareness

with that in mind, i offer you a poem that deeply fit me as it creatively came out, ala dalai’s words, of brain and heart – renamed only slightly to clarify it’s a “yoga” pose i’m writing about ;-)

my thanks to dVersepoets for offering a poet’s-option open mike prompt

it’s like offering an open-pose session of yoga -

the yoga of poetry ;-)

Evolution of a Pose

As a tiny child

(I am told)

I

liked to lift

my chest

off

the floor

and peek about

and smile at those around me.

*

As a quietly raucous teen

(i’ve been reminded)

i’d lift my chest

from the

hot

beach sands

that are galveston

to peer around

at my peers.

*

As a young man intent

on learning asanas

i’d lift prone from

the mat

to

the third chakra

i knew must be in there

…somewhere.

A

cobra

i was, i was told.

Maybe, with smiling fangs?

i wondered…

*

In the service

i’d lift my chest

with my breath as

i pressed my finger

on the trigger.

I was a

cobra

now

i thought.

*

As a dad

i’d lift

my head

as my children

learned to lift their head

then their chest,

core muscles moving

them

to the crawling mobile stage -

and i recall

(i would tell them)

they’d lift their chest

off

the floor

and peek about

and smile..at all those around them.

*

The cobra pose is but

a stage of skin

between

the playful peeking child

and the grateful mom and dad.

The pose

is the peeking child

within.

Nothing more.  And never nothing less.

The Prompt, “Sculpting a Poem“ from dVersepoets

victoria c slotto, hosts dversepoets’ prompt, “sculpting a poem” and gives a brief overview of sculpture’s uses and forms, with many nice links to both 3D and 2D artists known for their work in sculpture

i also happened to pick up a new word, when victoria asked for an “ekphrastic poem” -

ie, a poem that comments upon another art form

*

Tips

among the several tips victoria suggests, i centered on two :

• Create a poem that is multi-dimensional, that is, one that can be read on more than one level.

• Choose one of the above “tools” such as texture or shape and allow it to shine in your poem.

*

dVersepoets

from a few months exposure and experience, i can say that as a group, and individually, the quality of interactions with other poets, both in the content of commentary and in the tone of those critiques, this is a supportive imaginative entertaining group with a lot of creative talent

if you’ve had a hankering to be involved with other writers, esp poetry, i feel i can say this has worked for me ;-)

***

The Shape of Gratitude

the form, the shape, is

inside the stone

i’ve heard, a famous sculptor

once said -

if gratitude is in

the stone of life

how is it found, discovered

in the mix of crumbly and diamond

hard

molecules packed like stone?

does gratitude find the fissure and

split what needs shedding revealing

the expectant-waiting, now

let loose to

breathe?

does

gratitude

softly cloth-scrub the knobby grains and

accept the wave and weave of daily

living

set in stone?

will gratitude

learn

it may be

the real mix is the mesh

of what’s desired and what’s available?

can even angels claim soul’s rights

into any birth?

or is sculpted stone

simply

fluid grace set to rest?

the shape of gratitude is

both

the question, and the answer…
