First Snow
first snow
came thickly
quietly
blankets of white
across the lands and lawns
woven through a
winter night’s
length
woven wet
in waves
of whispered flakes
wafted in flurries
specks – streaks
wandering stitches
stretching
sidewalk edges to their
lawns
the grasses to their graveled ways.
first snow stayed several
days.
quietly
laid
expertly
by its architect
like white quieted birds lined
along all the wet dark branches
brightening them -
slipped
like
covers upon the roofs
with white trim along eaves
highlighting
where we live and play
outlining
with crystals caught in light
all our lives our
hopes anew in warmed quiet comfort.

I live in a tropical country, so my first snow experience was nothing short of magical. I remember that experience after reading this poem. Thank you.
my first too, if i don’t count a three day freak snowfall in houston in ’71
so i counted “this” snowfall as my real first, glad it sparked your memory of your first too
quite an array of interesting photos w/verse on your site! best wishes
These are great lines:
like white quieted birds lined
along all the wet dark branches
brightening them -
it’s esp nice that those were the words that gave me the most pause
thank you much!
