“angel baby” – enduring poetry

***

i’ve referenced in prior poems the idea that we often sense our oneness in our everyday lives – that we often meditate without realizing it

and though our goal may be to more consciously meditate in time (i have no real idea where “more consciously” would be “completely conscious”) – with “angel baby” i feel i’ve chosen our most fragile yet most enduring link to oneness

where “cross country” linked me to our external world of trees and air and rocks, and “heart beats” crossed across to another heart, “angel baby” in retrospect, feels like i am balanced, precariously it almost seems, ‘tween a twinkle, winking birth into a day of new days, and an older light, catching glimpse-reminders, where i’ve been, where i’ll be, and when i go, who i am…

*

if the words endure, they do so because they link the links -

Angel Baby

Hands so small the fingernails

are but points of paint.

And lips so shapely so

tiny baby birds sing

through them.

And while sleeping,

those same fresh lips

crease a quick smile, as

to say, “I know you’re watching

me.”  For that’s the essence

of an angel baby:  to give

us a glance, almost a touch,

of heaven’s most precious

promise:  new life.

below is my comment 4 years ago on my work

***

Artist’s Comment: one of our most enduring most requested writings we’ve created

equally as enduring has been my fascination with the image of those tiny finger nails, which provided my starting point for this work

that i refer to the tiny fingernails as “points of paint” didn’t even strike me at the time as so closely tied to my enjoyment of painting

the baby birds & lips reference is a direct association to my oldest daughter as an infant

adan – december 15, 2007

***

i realize now, what had sparked my memory 4 years ago, of why i was reminded in 1994 of my oldest girl, was the birth that year of my oldest granddaughter -

and this image, of my youngest granddaughter, begins to link them all ;-)

the links of what endures does, it seems, endure….

if a picture is worth a thousand words, a painting then, is either worth none, or more than can be said -

and either count could signify like or dislike

so, i’m not gonna try that ;-)

instead -

* i’ll supply a bit of background on the image

* a bit of info on the physical painting: size, medium, brush work, etc as appropriate

* a little history of any prev commentary if available

* if the painting is for sale, donated, sold, or simply in a private collection

* and lastly, but as per my purpose in my blog, integrate what this painting may mean to me, as relating to things-yoga

*

i don’t intend to post my work in any particular order, letting myself enjoy picking an image that simply appeals to me to do

at times i may know or sense my choice is:

because of the time of year, or an article i’ve recently posted or intend to, or the image reminds me of something happening in my life at this time -

if i know, i’ll be sure and say…

otherwise, maybe later, i’d get a glimmer of why the clouds and sun played out the sky i saw that day ;-)

*

not all things are known, or need to be known -

just being where i can seem to know, seems to be enough these days ;-)

enjoy – let me know if you like the image

Why “Swan on Lady Bird Lake” ?

there’s all kind of reasons why i chose “swan on lady bird lake” as my first painting to feature -

one, it was up on the wall – has been for years since the early 2000′s when i painted it

two, one of my favorites ;-)

three, based on a photo i took with my oldest granddaughter, scout, along the hike & bike trail near downtown austin

four, looking at the painting, right now, on the second bedroom’s wall, it closely matches what i describe as a visually-felt state of being

it was an easy choice once my eyes rested on it…

*

Picture Facts

* 16×20 oil on canvas

* painted about 2002

* not for sale

* set in spring in austin

* relatively heavily textured

*

Why I Painted “Swan on Lady Bird Lake”

visual art i create comes from a verbally-complex intuitively-simple part of me

i can usually verbalize and verbalize the whys and whats of a piece of art i create

but it goes back to and comes from the image touching this most consistently conscious part of myself i can remember

this is especially true of visual art i create in paint

the colors and textures and push and pull of brush among pigment is like a self-guided visual meditation

all i require is a concentrated co-ordination of my eye, my hand, and my heart

*

the day was beautiful, austin at its remaining-good-weather best

the day had warmed toward the 90′s but been beat back nearing evening

scout, our oldest granddaughter was visiting, and we’d walked down to (then) town lake  [2] to catch the sights

joggers with bp monitors strapped like a stripe around their chest passed by, mingling with 3-wheel strollers holding tots or pets – shadows were creeping down the banks into the water – and the noise and shudder of all the autos waiting for their lights were…silent

the shuttered power plant along the north bank of the lake (the fragility tamed colorado river dammed further upstream to the west toward the sun toward the hill country) cast smoke-stack shadows reaching past the reflected creeping growth of green

scout spotted a bird, a white swan, the swan of town lake i told her, grinning – you know, like swan lake – no grandpa, that’s lame she grinned yet smiling through her eyes

i took some shots – there’s another one grandpa – click click

evening was cooling and we were getting hungry…

grandma would have supper ready ;-)

*

Details

this was the early years of my switch from acrylics to oil, from harder edges and abstraction – to softening blending sides and i-can-recognize-that images

"Detail, Swan on Lady Bird Lake"

"Detail, Swan on Lady Bird Lake"

i liked experimenting with thickly laid undercoats with ridged passages of color

i liked cross-laying the over-coats in skips and jumps and peek-a-boos

hellos and smiles and surprise expressions

but always touching the heart…

*

Yoga

so is this yoga?

well, at this level of feeling, that i have for both my art and my yoga practice, there’s no doubt for me it is

does it fit all definitions of yoga?

i doubt it ;-)

but then, it doesn’t fit “everyone’s” definition of art either ;-)

footnotes

[1] lady bird lake, austin, tx

the name for the portion of the colorado river that is flow-controlled that passes by downtown, was originally called town lake

except for after heavy rainfalls, a person can actually canoe on the river most of the time

a few years ago, a non-binding vote-in was held, and town lake was renamed in in honor of lady bird johnson, the wife of president johnson from texas – i totally supported that with my own vote for her

lady bird did more to beautify texas (in my lifetime) than any other person i know of

there are actually stretches of texas hwys that are a visual pleasure to drive, esp in the spring time

it is hard to realize, without seeing photos or film of what the banks of town lake looked like before lady bird took charge of making town lake useful for the people of austin, how treeless and muddy and outright dangerous the place was

Intro

i’ve begun to suspect, there’s not an endeavor involving people that doesn’t include or produce a loophole :

* purgatory

* mitigating circumstances

* instant replay

* time-out

* foul ball

* in a pinch

* on the other hand

* grace

* forgiveness

* illusion

* annulment

* we’re only human

and i can’t leave out :

* playing your edge

*

some loopholes are more acceptable, for me, than others, like grace and forgiveness

illusion, in general, doesn’t hold enough for me as a loophole ;-)

***

Playing Your Edge I

Playing Your Edge I

Respectability of Playing Your Edge

playing your edge, one’s edge, my edge, is accepted, respectable

i sure like it ;-)

* the mildly masked competitive spirit is thought to cut only the individual playing; no guilt or fault is assumed

* each person must identify their own edges, how hard how soft (think contemporary art vs a renoir), how firm how malleable

* a person has cultural permission to critique only themselves, and pullback or go-ahead with an effort on their say-so

it’s a great loophole!

***

Playing Your Edge is Like…

playing your edge is like driving in the pitchest dark of a cooling night on an unlit coastal mountain roadway

only the speeding dashing curving streaks of white between the two lanes saying where the road is

crack the window to brush your cheek on ocean air

salty shrieks of seagulls floating effortlessly overhead

or close the car tight, grip the wheel, eyes printing the stripes in the road like landing lights dashed on as you stare at the unknown

or open all the windows and hear your song in the rush of air wrapping eddys round your heart, your eyes as moist as the night cooled air

**

its your edge your call your car, your body

your lights upon the road

*

all else is beyond your control, it’s a loophole….

[1]

***

Playfulness of Playing Your Edge

loophole or not, playing your edge is a wonderful phrase

just having the word “play” in it (so universally understood) makes the phrase so attractive

*

whether i am pushing tentatively, searching for the moment’s boundaries, or pressing determinedly, exploring more range of motion or motivation – i am playing!

i really like that – as a kid, i think i almost always liked playing  [2]

only time i didn’t feel this way, was when i’d be really angry (more often as a teen) – hard to be playful angry….

*

and of course, for me, the real gem of playing my edge, is finding that every part of me, has an edge, and can be playfully “played”

***

Playing Your Edge II

Playing Your Edge II

Big Playground

real big!

yoga’s playground for playing your edge is HUGE!

- physical

- mental

- emotional

- spiritual

- combo’s

*

all the playgrounds are like arenas of awareness -

*

the physical playground is most commonly thought of it seems, with pose work the most obvious aspect

mentally, one’s edge is, for me, most frequently, the lines of reasons between wanting and not wanting to do a movement or pose

emotionally, my edge is more fluid, and can run the gamut from, happy to do a movement, to angry resistance – at times, in a flash flood that strands reason and awareness on a wedged wooden limb bobbing in a the torrent driving for direction or the boundaries of a soft earthen bank

i suppose it’s reasonable and can be argued, that there isn’t an edge to play in regard to spirituality, even one’s own parcel speck of it ;-)

if i was thinking of fully realized beings, that may be true, but really, i have no idea…

so i’m referring more to folk like myself ;-)

so…for me, my “edge” of experience with ”spirituality” is, at best, a process of awareness

*

Combo’s -

okay, now here’s where it gets tricky, yet interesting, for me…

Playing Your Edge III

Playing Your Edge III

say one edge-line, my physical, says it’s tired, needs to rest, didn’t i read my own article about recovery!

and my mental edge-line says, nope, need the cardio and bone compression, or i’m gonna feel more tired later than i do now, or what’s the use of getting all those certifications saying i learned something! so get going!

surprisingly, it’s often my emotional-edge, volatile aspect that it is, that referees -

come on guys! gotta do it, but let’s do it where we’ll be able to do it, and not get our feelings hurt, or our muscles, and not get big-headed about it! -

remember, you’re a young senior now!

there’s some nice things about getting older, so let’s go slow…

warm up…

hey, did you hear the joke about…yea, i know, don’t even know a good joke right now, ok, go ahead, you can smile ;-) yea! maybe little more range of motion there, easy…easy, come on! can’t even see that edge, don’t push it, nice, yea, that’s better, almost done….  [3]

combos are how most my edges are played out -

seems to be so many variables involved, i can only be ready to let awareness of each edge make itself known to me…

*

my spiritual-edge, meanwhile, i imagine ;-) simply lets nature (my integrative process) catch up to whatever’s waiting for me, that which i can handle at that moment

it’s very definitely a process ;-)

*

i left out stuff like chakras, cause really, i have no idea…

though, i do tend to like pictorial representations of them

ray long at daily bandha has had a great chakra posture you have been able to get fairly easy from, but please check for current availability

*

closest i’ve read recently that gives interesting, related viewpoints to my take on playing one’s edge, are from two online yoga sites :

an interview on magazine of yoga with a writer, “practices, alan heathcock” -

“Do not look beyond yourself for validation. Be brave enough to take yourself seriously.”

and a 1st person blog post by nancy alder at flying yogini -

“…teacher uses the same sequence (and language) every time she teaches.  Yet despite the fact that I knew what was coming next, my body was in a totally different place than it was the last time I was there so it felt new.”

the ways each of us recognize, and deal with, our various individualized edges, is incredibly diverse -

yet here, in two remarkably differing experiences, related to us in words from two distinct worlds of life, we recognize, not only their commonality, but that same kernel of connectingness, to us…

*

Being Ourselves, Yet Connecting

Being Ourselves, Yet Connecting

yoga’s loophole, playing your edge, allows us to both be ourselves, yet connect -

we are human, we are of one, we are both….

Playing Your Edge III

Random Questions

are right & left brain differences the ultimate incarnation and source of most our edges?

what does “can’t get a word in edge-wise” really mean?

is being “edgy” too much of a good thing?

is compassion recognition of an edge in desperate search of a fit?

does playing your edge, give you an edge?

*

do you feel, think, or know you have an edge?

share it, live it, write it, paint it, put it to music, walk it! build it!

and yes, smile it ;-)

***

Playfulness, What’s It Good For…

for me, there’s an inherent sense of harmlessness in playfulness…

[1]  an interesting article on uncertainty (unknowns) is “the power of  uncertainty

a nice quote from it is, “The key to true creative problem solving is the ability to work in ambiguity….”

i apologize for not remembering where i saw the mention and link, but i keep thinking it was something from yoga lunchbox

[2]  my only memories counter to that were, when i had time-conflicting playful-activities available at the same time

for example, i was about fourteen, deeply engrossed reading a fictional book, twingingly feeling an urge to pick up my trumpet and play with a few notes on repeat in my head ;-) when a friend showed up at the window (we all had our windows open back then in houston!) wanting to know if i wanted to join a game of baseball down the street

decisions, temptations, life ;-)

[3]  of course, this type conversation, is more commonly experienced as a back & forth exploratory-hunch of what’s best that moment for me – typically quite quick, hardly thought out at al, intuitive

when it does slow to this style of sorta hearing myself, it’s usually because of my studies or new info (like anatomy) that require an integration refinement – gotta internalize it ;-)

Mom at Museum – “Somebody has to do the cleaning”

had to give it a title ;-)

took mom to the mfa houston impressionist exhibit today with my wife and sister; saw a few real gems from monet renoir and company

had a tastey lunch and chat

"Last Supper" Sebastiano Ricci circa 1720

"Last Supper" Sebastiano Ricci circa 1720

what did mom remember ’bout the art show and like best?

a last supper rendition by Sebastiano Ricci circa 1720, that wasn’t even part of the pricey admission

unlike leonardo’s version, this one has a dog eating up front plus a laundry lady to your left as you view the painting

here was one of history’s most imagined-recorded moments  [1] , the last supper, and what caught her eye, was the dog and the laundry lady -

it spoke reality to her; it said, even then, somebody had to do the cleaning…

that’s my mom ;-)

***

if yoga is, partially at least, the development of a balanced sense of the importance of all facets of our life, then my mom, devoutly catholic, has made that attribute her own

yoga, it seems, like oneness, as part of oneness, is like the air -

no one owns it, we all need it….

finally -

decided i’d keep my originating DBA (“doing business as”) i’ve had from the early 80′s, plus re-direct the traffic i’d had for my old art & poetry website, adanlerma.com, to yoga-adan.com also

this provides me a paper, mental, emotional, and spiritual continuity ;-)

*

re-directing my old site’s traffic to here is what clinched the decision to create this post

people searching for old titles of poems or art work or reviews, now know i’m here

and i figured, well, might as well make the best of it ;-) so, here goes -

*

Those searching for previously posted poetry or art :

***

3 cups 40x60, circa early 80's

3 cups 40x60, circa early 80s

poetry titles to do with education (special ed, elementary school teacher, etc), sports (baseball, basketball, etc), family (mom, sister, etc), special occasions (mis quince anos, wedding, etc), and more philosophical work (i know, you’re thinking, more philosophical than this already!) like “riches within, etc) -

there are evidently numerous searches failing to find some poems that were on my previous site, so i’ll try and place those here on my new site first

and -

art images of austin, texas countryside, new york city, san antonio, galveston, and older abstracts -

those are either coming, or already posted, but please be aware, it’s a slow process ;-)

next week, i post my first full featured art work (much like i do my poetry), “Swan on Lady Bird Lake” – a contemporary impressionist piece from 2002

*

to search, try one or more of these :

* the “poetry” or “art” category will be a good way to find them

* another method is via the excellent search box at the top of each page

* and a final method is via the category list near the top right, also on each page

* oh, and there’s a category drop-down search box right above my “tweety bird” twitter tweets ;-)

email newsletter :

if a person would like to be notified of new postings, please sign up for the email newsletter alerts – news of new posts are sent out automatically

*

though i’ll more “consciously” be trying to tie my poetry writings (integrating them) to my growing awareness and interest in yoga and fitness, most people who are familiar with my work and writings, will probably think, “well, he’s just added the name yoga to what he was already saying” -

i can’t much disagree with that ;-)

*

integrating my art work to yoga, is only slightly different, as it’s visual

but my commentary will show, that there also, not much has changed in my views

added, though, will be bits of my photography i hadn’t featured on my previous site

[1]  adam light creations was a temporary name i came up with when trying to name my first real efforts to market my art and other efforts -

the name has happened to stick ;-)

my idea was, that adam light creations reflected :

me – i’m adan, which is spanish for adam; and adam usually means the first, and these marketing beginnings were to be my first consciously made efforts

light – i’d always heard, and believed, that if something had a sense of light to it, visually or impressionistically so within the person, that was a good thing

creations – and these then, were my first creations with the intent to create light in people’s lives

not much’s changed since then, though, as evident, i’ve now consciously added all the fitness work i was interested in back then, like jogging, dance, etc

[2]  ”3 cups” is an early 80′s acrylic on linen canvas painting i did as a series of “cup” images

i’d wanted something that reflected my love of the sea and shells and flowers, and figured “cups” would be a good generic – then people could “choose” what they felt the image represented, if anything ;-)

currently, one of our granddaughters has “dibs” on it ;-)

PREFIX

i had to make a decision -

rewrite my stream-of-consciousness-leaning post

or explain it better, before the body of the post

i chose the latter

*

Why a Summary of this Post :

this particular post, is more stream of consciousness and complex than usual, at least for me

like my visual art, like the way i practice and teach asana work, the process by which i write, is usually more important to me, if i can choose so, than the (current) result

it is my innate “journey” -

within the context of the process, minimal necessary alignment or form or safety, is my only restriction

they are my natural limitations -

the summary below is “the alignment” – the framework i was discovering

the full article below the summary is “the process” – the exploratory discovery

*

SUMMARY

* i am getting old(er)

* getting old(er) has its perks

* one perk is it’s ok to “allow” oneself to listen to one’s body (limitations & inclinations) more fully, within the framework of what’s best for me

* what’s best for me, physically, as in asanas, aerobic, or resistance work, is partially, though importantly, defined by current fitness theory and practice

* current fitness theory and practice says i should listen to my body and modulate my effort and intensity as needed for both improvement, and for recovery

* current fitness theory and practice says, as i age, my necessary needed effort of intensity, to maintain health and fitness, decreases slightly

* aging, experientially and physically, has given me needed insights

* women, as evidenced by the number and quality of blog posts i’ve encountered recently on online yoga blog posts, seem to be expressing many of the same style insights i’ve only recently become more aware of

* most of these blogs are yoga orientated

* most the women writing today are relatively, or much younger, than myself; yet are expressing a similiar demand and right to express themselves as they are (in preference) – where they are (in expertise)

* how?

* how are women as a group creating and achieving a movement in consciousness, unrelated to their ages, that took age to confirm within myself?

* i extrapolate that, as the seasons turn from spring to summer, to fall and winter, and back through again, there’s a shift in consciousness occurring, and women are (currently) at the forefront

* why?

* the common almost unspoken denominator, is there’s a fitness revolution, physically and mentally, and the most effective fitness-factor combining most elements, seems to be yoga

* the women have caught on

* so, playfully, with a symbolic basketball-elbow to the head ;-) i challenge my fellow dude-guys to, well, pick up the slack ;-)

*

below, in my original full article, is the process by which i reached the above, now visible, summary-conclusions

***

Intro

the nice thing ’bout getting old(er) is, it’s a collection of things

a bundle, a grouping, a cluster, a bunch of stuff ;-)

nice not to have to rely on just one item

*

Getting Old is a Relative Thing -

more relative than usually believed

technically, we each are getting older the moment we are born -

even if we don’t feel older

so that’s why the title says “old(er)”

*

but i do feel, at 60, that i’ve “begun” to get old, even if not yet old ;-)

Adan, a Little Older

Adan, a Little Older

what’s prompted me to ponder on this, isn’t my aches and pains or loss of speed or range of motion – those are incremental, and vary, via things like my diet, the weather, my mood

and it’s a mood, an online mood, that’s caught my attention

i’ve noticed, almost like a wave, a tide of postings, mostly by ladies, on the topic of finding a way of allowing themselves to be “where they are” within their practice -

and without a guilty or harpy-inner voice telling them that their practice is “not good enough” or “needs perfecting”

i for one, welcome it

*

if what’s occurring is real, a real change of mood, reflecting first across the pond of yoga, that it’s wrong that ”only” fierce or perfect poses lead one to perfection -

but rather, that perfection of the human experience is in the moment, changing moment to moment – [1]

then, an allowance for “process” becomes possible…

if this surge of standing up for oneself as a process, is a fad, a flash, but a sparkle in an inky night, that’s ok -

but something about how much truth there is in this swell of sentences, about being in one’s own moment, not a guru’s or name-teacher’s or well-intentioned person’s moment, says, this flash will endure -

like the beginnings of a new sun, the flashes gather, a new sustaining light -

*

A Sampler List

among the many sites that have spoken of this self acceptance, via various individuals, mostly female, that either run the site or were a guest on that site, are :

the yoga lunchbox

yogadork

live.love.yoga

recovering yogi

and i guess me too ;-)

*

The Aha! Moment, First Part

so today, impromptuly deciding to attend a jazzercise-aerobic early-in-the-week cross-training -

feeling tired from sorting boxes stored too long to want anymore – i instinctively pulled back on my rom and rpe (rate of perceived exertion), giving myself more time than usual to “warm up” during the routine

and i did ache, and i did question whether i truly now was not only feeling old(er), but was actually being old

i thought to myself, if i am old, well, i am; i work out, i eat well, i rest, so minus a bionic replacement of most my parts ;-) this is where i am, right now

and i thought of the posts above, mostly written by women, as i eased my rom (range of motion) a bit further out on extensions (though not nearly as much as usual, half way through a workout-hour) and suddenly realized how lucky i am to be getting old(er)

let me count the ways, or a few of them ;-)

i don’t need an excuse (like partied too late last night, or forgot the alarm) to ease up

my body more clearly gives me feedback (and sometimes what feels like direct instructions!)

no one expects as much from me…

*

The Aha! Moment, Second Part

but it’s something from fitness to yoga this time, not yoga to dance, that makes the connection for me this time

it’s mingled with the sentiment from the many first hand yoga posts above, pocketing readers’ attention across the yoga-verse of blogs

apparently, this yoga-fitness-feedback loop i write about, is a two-way ac/dc circuit ;-)

*

it’s fairly commonly known, as i’ve written about, in my cross-training and recovery article, that, within a person’s recovery time-period from exercise, a reduced physical capacity commands respect

the body is finite, as every respectable yogi master maintains, so…

Adan Lerma

Adan Lerma

common sense (not willful arrogance) says, when the body’s tired, only so much energy is still available in the musculature, and only so much work is possible

otherwise, “accidents” may happen…

the same corollary, in additon for recovery, is true for children, and even teens below a certain age -

so what about old folk?

or old(er) folk? ;-)

like me?

well of course! says the compassionate gallery of readers!

fitness theory and practice says, one’s maximum heart rate is determined by subtracting one’s age from 220

as one ages, the max hr (heart rate) number decreases, dropping the training heart range as well

not much, but it does -

thus, how much energy i need to experience the same number of daylight and evening hours well, drops also

* my amount of exertion needed to keep myself fit, dips *

i can keep up by slowing down – sorta ;-)

otherwise, the same force and energy used today, that i used five years ago, is much higher up the training range – a range, if exceeded, means creeping toward peak training numbers

and folks, no one goes peak to peak day after day and lives long to tell about it ;-)

*

and no worries, i don’t plan to cheat, and skid too low down my training range

but it’s good to know there’s an appropriate range for my RPEy  [2]

it’s good to know the range, well…ranges, day-to-day ;-)

today, my-yoga thanks my-fitness – aha!

*

Final Thoughts…

…has to do with the ladies who wrote some of the above posts

there’s some of us guys around writing stuff similar, like nick potter on yoga lunchbox (and probably bob weisenberg at elephant journal, but haven’t read enough of his work yet) -

but i gotta admit, either we guys are mostly ignoring the writing on the digital walls, or, like me, have just been taking it for granted that perfection’s in the moment

but not the ladies

their demands of themselves to take back their own authority and decide their own form of yoga experience, strikes me as fresh, attentive, and enduring

i don’t feel this as a pushing away of guys, but rather, a demand for authenticity

but still, why this thread? now?

this boiling to the top of the heated yoga-comment-rooms, these rumbling-rubbings from the rubber mats at home and in the studio?

why this sudden (apparently) surge of web-wide yoga-demand to be as they be, in their personal moments in time?

have the yoga ladies of america and new zealand and europe and elsewhere suddenly contracted a space virus, to soon wrinkle into future-now dorian-grey-portraits of themselves? aging like me into a finally-inevitable acceptance of pace and place?

have they gotten old(er) like me, in years and years and years…?

they don’t look like that’s it ;-)

*

Yoga-Fitness-Yoga Flash Points

no, i believe yoga is returning fitness’ initial surprise aha! moment, is returning the favor back again, and has volleyed back an irresistibly smiling new aha! moment in return…

the individual moments of awareness among the women are happening so densely, a collective-like fuse appears to have been lit  [3]

yoga, the ladies seem to be saying, doesn’t have to be guru-like dominated

kindness and self acceptance must be the rule

within a way to remain healthy

yoga, it’s being found,

accommodates that

*

though

i do think

women are growing

old(er) - it’s of

a maturing

of self

of acceptance

of consciousnesses -

on the mat -

yes

the gals have caught on…

the world is theirs

to make…

*

guys, i think it’s time to pop the top off a fresh one, the game’s on…

Adan - Play Ball!

Adan - Play Ball!

but don’t worry, there’s no losers ;-)

we can all win in yoga -

play ball!

[1]  eric franklin, in his books and website and videos, talks frequently about how even the most conditioned of dancers, experiences their body and movement, differently, even if only slightly so, day-to-day

[2]  i suggested calling this, my Rate of Perceived Exertion for yoga – RPEy in part 3 of my meditation posts ;-)

[3]  i read recently, maybe a tweet, i searched but couldn’t find it, that each of us is responsible for our enlightenment (which i agree with) and that a collective enlightenment is not possible (which i disagree with)

it’s like saying the elements of the sun can fuse and enlighten the dark of space individually, yet not collectively

the collective-timing of individual parts, i believe, creates the collective happening

[4]  oh us guys like doing stuff together much like the girls, even if more so in activities like sports

i think most guys would agree, sports are just a more apparent means of “playing the edge” ;-)

the challenge for yoga then, to interest more guys, is not by creating harder rougher hotter more intense forms of yoga, but allowing each guy to feel the ok to play their own edge, with their own practice, in the direction that interests them

the challenge for yoga teachers is creating the opportunity then the experience to allow that internal edge to appear, be tested, and played with

and that’s something for all of us, male or female – thank goodness ;-)

yoga breathing – nose? mouth? or both?

***

basically, if this was only a question of beliefs, or philosophy, or even spiritual teachings, then my stance would simply be, that’s up to you ;-)

freedom of religion as a belief system, is fundamental to our country -

and constitutionally separate from the “state” -

so, my position, rests on fitness…

*

me me me ;-)

what do i need to be able to do the routines that provide my foundation of health to let me share more than heart felt wishes for the people around me and to myself?

*

Basics

afaa, in their group fitness certification text book, “fitness, theory and practice,” provides some nice pages comparing differences between typical western fitness routines, pilates, and yoga

breathing is one of the comparison / contrasts

*

it appears that not holding one’s breath is agreed by all…

First Breath Connections

First Breath Connections

and, generally speaking -

it appears that the main difference is in regard to the exhalation -

while yoga has traditionally taught nostril breathes for both the inhalations and exhalations  [1] , fitness theory and pilates emphasize exhalations through the mouth

the idea, i believe, is two-fold:

increase the air way for greater air movement

increase the ability to eliminate toxins and waste material

*

yoga, on the other hand, as i’ve heard or seen it taught (early 21st century u.s.a.) -

seems to feel that, if you have to exhale via the mouth, too much exertion or other problems (too much stress, not enough peacefulness, etc) are occurring

that these type exhalations are a signal to stop or change one’s activity

changing one’s activity is usually thought of as slowing down

*

but for me, these are simply variations on intent

for example, if in playing my “edge” (the apparently yogic-correct way of saying being assertive or self-goal-competitive) i determine my edge is receding and i can push further, there may be a short period of further physical conditioning (days? weeks?) where i simply need more air -

or need to expel more co2 -

i would never have reached my “intent” to be able to enjoy the level i enjoyed jogging in my 20′s and 30′s, if i had ceased my efforts when i couldn’t “only” breathe through my nose

*

i’ve thought about this question of the breath since way back -

back to the days when wild turkeys (this is in houston!) would chase me on my bicycle with training wheels and i learned early what ray long is talking about in his chest expansion articles ;-)

back to my junior high sprinting days when i learned a full belly of pizza, and wind sprints didn’t go well together -

back to moments of grief when heaving was the only way to breathe, period…

i’ve been aware of my breath in varying ways and wondered about it for many years, but without anything more than vague wonderings to grasp to…

*

More Recently

…as i re-examined yoga in light of the current fitness information available, that old style yoga adamancy i remembered from the early 70′s, that only one style breathing was appropriate for yoga, came roaring back  [2]

yet lately, it seems like several posts, either brought the subject up explicitly, or that even simple yoga movements kept bringing the subject up to me again for attention

More Breath Connections

More Breath Connections

jill miller’s yoga tune up video (short simple very effective routine & video) -

adding arm movements to bridge pose, co-ordinated with the inhale and exhale -

evoked almost an ache to ask, again, why why why the “how” regarding exhalations and inhalations

core power yoga has a nice article from last dec speaking more directly to my issue, saying “More importantly, the body’s movements…then put your nose to do if you are able to….”

so some people were challenging the notion of one pathway for the breath

*

Pros Regarding Nostril Breathing

undoubtably there are many pluses attached to pure nostril breathing, among them:

filtering the air more adequately than via the mouth

warming the air more completely before it enters the lungs

regulating the oxygen / carbon dioxide flow

calming the mind and heart

serving as a signal when exertion of mind or body creates a need for more pronounced breathing effort

reported astral or subtle energy or spiritual effects  [3]

so what could i quibble with that?

not much really ;-)

it’s the when and why i have trouble with…

*

My Quibble, Individuated Practice

i’ll leave aside i have a deviated septum, since that’s just me ;-)

*

i’ll start with my “why” of why i quibble with nostril-only breathing

let’s say, to begin with, i grew up in houston, worked summers outdoors since i was a young teen, and have known years of months of 100+ days

and no, it wasn’t a dry heat, even in austin ;-)

so “warming” the breath is like putting the ac on in vermont in the winter (my wife’s from vt and i’ll take her word for it ;-) )

filtering the nose?

well, gotta admit, with the allergies i have and the pollutants in the air, that’s probably a good idea, but nostril breathing’s not gonna filter out enough pollen or smut to make enough difference for me -

yet, staying aerobically active, in any aerobic activity, does…

third eye activation?

well, for better or for worse, since my more playful experiments in the early 70′s, i’ll leave this effect for those more inclined to pursue this

if there’s truth to this, it’ll come to me in its own best time, and i’ll be waiting for it ;-)

*

Breath Connection

Breath Connection

*

more important for me then, is the “when” of nostril breathing

like, all the time? really?

true, it may be a great discipline builder, and probably was, in its time

and believe me, if taking full deep breaths via my nose does the trick, yah! for me ;-)

but if not, and i need air, or need to expel it, i do…anyway i can

there’s lots of good info supporting this stance in fitness theory – i believe one day, probably in my lifetime (i’m 60) the separation of fitness theory and the promise of yoga, will be seen as having been, just another illusion ;-)

*

Closing Thoughts, uh, Breaths ;-)

my closing thought involves another early memory of the importance of my breath

age 9 or 10, i was having occasional dreams of drowning -

it was no co-incidence i was learning to swim at the neighborhood public pool, and had carefully been avoiding any depth deeper than the height to my nose ;-)

i’d slid my way along the pool’s rounded tiled edge, skirting my fear by pretending not to notice i’d slipped past my safe depth, and  joined my friends already playing push-pretend; once among them, i forgot my fear, all of us playfully pushing and pulling each other along the slick sun shimmered wet of the pool’s busy edge til a push unseen sent me into deeper water than i wanted to be in to be sinking in to be not-breathing in

i remember staring wide eyed at the clearness of the water, i could see kid’s feet dog-peddling, numbered markings on the pool floor, and my arms and legs rising slowly as my back led me lower

i remember thinking – i’m gonna die i went to confession that morning i was clear no hell for me, i relaxed

my feet touched the firm pool floor

and gently

pushed me to air

*

i knew instinctively, that my faith in having no sin, saved me

i also knew, less instinctively, more guiltily, it was my belief that gave my faith its power to save me – it felt like cheating ;-)

all i’d had to do was believe, and i could breathe

would i be so fortunate all my life ;-)

*

yoga, my yoga, is like that

fortunate in my life, allowing me to breathe more fully – when i believe i can, i do

allowing me to breathe between the sea of feelings and worlds of thought

helping me join what feels like art with what i know is science

letting me picture a pose, pristine in my poised mind

connecting concept with ligament and bone

caring that i’m whole

my yoga is integrating the art of living with the tissues of the living

my yoga says i can breathe any way i need, when i need, so…relax, and breathe….

*

late postscript

one of the better breath articles i’ve come across recently, appealing to me on several levels – knowledge, breathing reference tie-ins to our everyday language, and most importantly for me, it’s balanced reasonable presentation, is judy lasater’s article on yoga journal online, “breathing lessons

[1]  exceptions in yoga show up in particular breathing exercises

i couldn’t find a nice comprehensive listing of the various exceptions allowing mouth-exhalations, but a search among various google searches, like this one, has them showing up in scattered form

exceptions include, the ohm meditative sound, the victorious breath, deep cleansing breaths, and the golden thread exhalation

[2]  was this the fabled “lion’s breath” ?

not quite, not much tension relief going on there ;-)

[3]  my intent in this article is in regard to fitness yoga and the arts, and i assume each person has beliefs they pursue, so i leave the detailing of what these other effects may be to each person

two distinct catalysts prompted this poem to finally happen

i say finally cause i knew from way back i’d eventually write “something” ’bout being a yoga teacher, just didn’t know what or when

*

Roadside View, a Little Clearer

Roadside View, a Little Clearer

first catalyst was right before i began yoga-adan, and, in a conversation with nikki at live.love.yoga blog, who’d read some of my work, she asked when i’d have a yoga teacher poem

the question actually kinda shocked me -

i hadn’t planned on doing any yoga poem in the near term, much less a yoga teacher one

my process is to experience something to it’s natural flash point within me -

often times, the subject or activity, is something that, looking back and looking within, i see had flash-pointed long ago ;-) and i just hadn’t thought to write something on it

other times, as with yoga, despite explicitly yoga-ish experience dating back to the early 70′s, i clearly felt no flash point had been reach

nikki’s question, though, was the first flint that’d struck a spark -

*

then, this past week, in an effort to answer himalayan institute‘s now closed twitter #yogais challenge, i created two responses, and my second effort drew fire, my heart’s fire -

#yogais: yoga is the stillness of motion meant by kindness”

in the resulting poem, only one word changed in the phrase

*

if the words endure, they do so because they link the links -

my poetry writing process

this won’t be much a surprise -

some poems are born full-grown, hair shaved or with makeup, plus diet organically in place ;-)

others get tweaked -

and a few go through verbal boot-camp with enough revisions to make a tv series ;-)

i also frequently like to do variations, though some have strongly resisted any further mutations

this poem

“…a beginner’s view” is just that, a beginning, and just a view -

when this is the case, i usually have a more ambiguous, less concrete, rendition

it’s like an outline

i have images in mind, and tried, briefly, to go straight to that creation -

felt the outline flow into a sequence, like a newly practiced vinyasa, but knew it’s incompleteness by the silence in the sentences, there were none ;-) yet

so instead, when i have vagueness, in my imagery, i concentrate on rhythm, and stream of consciousness, from line to line…

“…speaking

breaths…

linked to living

touches are

the…”

the context cut short, the double meaning flowing from line to line is more apparent

but the links of meaning will still happen, to degrees, on a full reading

this is not magic, or unique to my work, but a fairly common form within poetry, a sort of stream of consciousness  [1]

stream of actualized consciousness?  hmmmm ;-)

that’s also not magic or unique within yoga, but is also commonly (more commonly?) formed within yoga ;-)

*

the connectedness of human activities is everywhere, it’s like the tiny searching roots of the smallest plant, already reaching, and finding, what is needed…

*

i feel, in time, i’ll have more yoga-teacher variations, but they’ll come, and until then, i have other things needing doing, then the new variation will be the thing needing doing ;-)

so i sense, and hope, for no one truly knows, this yoga teacher poem, my first yoga teacher poem, will not be an only bloom…

ps -

my sincere thanks to nikki at life.love.yoga and himalayan institute for their inspirational kick in my muse’s more than usually tight pants ;-)

header art # 2 – 040411

***

below is the full image for this spring’s header on the blog

with my first header, from a painting of a rare snow day on valentine’s day in austin, though it came out well, and i grew to appreciate it, i initially felt badly, cropping the image to fit the header size -

but with this photo, i like both, the cropping worked really well

*

Spring Floral Header 040111

Spring Floral Header 040111

*

the image itself, is from the mid 2000′s, pretty close to the time of the valentine snow day mentioned above – that’s the weather in austin ;-)

i’d planted the pear trees the fall of 2000, and they must’ve like the crazy summer heat and bouts of 20 degree winter freezes, cause they never failed to bloom like this in the spring -

beautiful clusters of tiny white flowers set among the still-soft early spring leaves

the bark had thickened quickly over the few years to this picture

and the scent was faint firm soft and lingered

*

i got many great pictures of these leaves and trees, in the spring and in the fall, and have used their gracious images in several posts already

another spring leaf example is on “asanas (poses) – do i HAVE to do the pose this way? part 1, no…”

good fall leaf color example is on “teaching my first yoga class”

*

and i loved pruning the crossing branches, and covering the ground with fresh mulch each year

it was a process…

*

that’s how yoga is -

all fitness really – dance, zumba, jogging, resistance work…

and i really feel there’s a need to remind or let others know the truth of this, this inter-connectedness of what we people do, what we like doing, with movement and breathing and feeling fit -

but it seems, for me, there’s more process available for me, with yoga

i don’t think it’s more special than other activities, per se, just fits me more so

so there’s more process to, well, process ;-)

*

yoga reminds me of me, needing my leaves and twigs and branches each needing twining and pruning and careful daily guiding so each leaf, each leaf that’s part of the tree, gets to get some light….
