so you wanna be in an ebook? an offer from curvy yoga’s anna guest-jelley

Intro

Opps, Again

this is the second time i’ve let a post go out before putting in my finished post

so for those who came to a template, or the removed-from-view page, my sincere apologies

not that i don’t have lots and lots of excuses, and even some explanations! but none are life threatening nor permanently disrupting, so, i’ll get back to the intended post ;-)

*

Curvy Yoga Intro

i came across anna’s call for articles for a new ebook a few weeks ago, and the deadline is now approaching : february 14th, valentines, and my wife’s birthday!

so even the deadline-details practically demand i share this info ;-)

anna guest-jelley has the well-regarded site, curvyyoga, and has been posting relevant important posts on yoga, self-image, and gentle self-acceptance for a good while

*

Curvy Yoga Site

anna’s site says, the curvy yoga site is “for people who want to live the lives they imagine, today. Who don’t want to wait until they’re flexible, skinny, have enough money, etc. to start treating themselves well…”

her site includes an impressive and welcome list of resources, such as video, podcasts, and written instructions for poses, including information on modifications

also included on her resource page, is a list of teachers for curvy bodies

so what does a curvy yoga look like?

take a look -

impressive huh?

*

afaa, in the studies my valentine-wife-baby and i both did, brought us issues to be aware of that sound simple enough, but that without pausing, i had just not thought of

a large mass is slower to get going, and gathers more power and speed once in motion, and therefore, needs awareness and caution regarding range of motion and in coming to rest or reversing directions

there are modifications available for movements that allow a more comfortable and productive reaching and lunging and bending

many of these modifications are also valid for almost anyone who is not in top shape, hasn’t warmed up properly, isn’t limber, has had an injury or illness, is elderly, or simply de-conditioned – i know i’ve been the latter more times than i wanna be again ;-)

and beyond the physical, there is of course so much more -

anna’s site addresses these also…

***

The Invitation from Curvy Yoga

from anna’s site :

AN INVITATION

So here’s my proposal, and I really (really, really!) hope you’re in: I’m going to curate a book of curvy yogi stories from around the world, and I want you to be part of it! I will accept submissions for six weeks and then will put it together in a beautiful, downloadable, free(!) eBook to share far and wide.

there’s much more details on her page about the new ebook, and a way to contact curvy yoga if you have more questions

*

so, if you’ve been wanting to get in on the ebook revolution, have something to say (who doesn’t ;-) ), need to share, and wanna stay in the loop for a free ebook, you gotta consider this ;-)

as mentioned before, the deadline is valentines!

***

Great Sample Article on Curvy Yoga Site

i should add that one of my favorite meaningful articles about yoga, is from anna’s site, from last summer, “Shame-Free Yoga: Yoga for Your Body

i still think about this article, and part of anna’s response to my own comment at the time, the “inclusiveness” of the article

the issues that affect a curvy person are similar to that affecting anyone wanting to regain their health and self-esteem

yes, there are differences, distinctions, things that won’t apply -

yet the similarities, i believe, are worth being aware of…

***

Conclusion

even from way back, as i would struggle from being fairly fit, to falling off the health-wagon, to working my way back again, sometimes with more mental and emotional weight than physical weight, i couldn’t understand why some people made fun of those who were actually out on the track or jogging trail, and now-a-days on the mat, trying

“most” of why, it seems, is lack of understanding -

this call for contributions for people to submit to what will be a free downloadable ebook, is a chance to not only share, but fill in and replace some of the normal mis-understanding and fear we all sometimes have, towards others, and ourselves…

*

Nice Thing ‘Bout Getting Old(er)

nice thing ’bout getting old(er)” is a free ebook, of over a dozen postings from my blog here, organized into information i’ve been learning about aging, fitness, yoga, and creativity…

it’s meant to be referred to, and read here and there, nibbled at -

although the poems can be read straight through ;-)

Final Thoughts

Adan Lerma

awareness, my favorite gift from yoga so far, has been the key for me

and remembering, it really is a process ;-)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

**

Awareness – Gratitude – Inspiration

in Every Day Living

**

Adan Lerma has authored a series of  ebooks using three related titles.  Each title expresses part of a process expressing what we experience in our every day life.

A Month of Mornings Vol 1The first series, “A Month of Mornings” conveys the awareness of waking each day, to the repeating and new events in daily life, and celebrating that.  A cup of coffee.  Heat in winter.  Getting achy or sore, fit or raring to get started, day-to-day, each day.

Expressing his own amazement, Adan says, “It’s incredible how much we are aware of each day we wake.  And how much more we become aware of, as we pay attention to those moments so early in our day.”

Adan says this series began as an experiment, to see what he would experience when he paid attention to just simply waking, each day.  ”The experiment continues each day, each morning,” adds Adan.

Everyday Gratitude Vol 1Then, initially also meant as an experiment, and day-to-day companion, Adan began seeing if he could find a gratitude, one each day, no matter how simple or basic.  From this Adan’s second ebook series grew and became “Everyday Gratitude.”

“My whole experiment worked out in ways I hadn’t expected.  My morning awareness exercise supported and enhanced discovering, sometimes just accepting, those same small style of every day things that can mean so much,” explained Adan.

Each of these two series are projected to have a new volume available approximately every four to six weeks.  Also each series will maintain its own distinctive same cover page, with only the volume number changed.  The covers are both designed by Adan using his own original photography and art.

Everyday Inspirations - PhotoPoems Vol 1About a month into the creation of these two series, Adan says it dawned on him that he could combine two of his creative loves, verse and imagery.

“‘Everyday Inspiration – PhotoPoems’ is literally the result of my other two creative works.  One emphasizes awareness, the other gratitude, and the result is often inspiration,” says Adan.

In this third series of ebooks, Adan presents ten original photographs he has taken in his wife’s home state of Vermont, joined with an original poem for each image.

Each photograph is of an every day scene by or near Adan’s home. As with his photos in his first photography ebook “Photography Plus, a Beginner’s View” the images are what Adan considers non-professional, yet, combined with a matching verse, expresses a simple day-to-day inspiration.

In this third series, Adan will offer a different cover for each release.

All available titles are updated frequently on Yoga-Adan’s My eBooks Page.  An rss feed is available, as is a newsletter.

In addition, Adan’s Amazon Author’s Page provides information on other titles at Amazon Books.

More information about Adan, including his studies and degrees, can be found on his website’s About page.

history of Adan’s writings since the 70s is chronicled on his website.

Small Gratitudes Make the Larger Gratitude

i wrote this sub-title in my post for my second mini ebook series, “everyday gratitudes” and feel it still holds here -

that small gratitudes help make inspirations, of all sizes

there is a process, i believe, involved…

“A Month of Mornings” – “Everyday Gratitude” – “Everyday Inspirations”

i also wrote, in my previous post about my ebook series, “if the poems in ‘a month of mornings‘ are of awareness..the poems of ‘everyday gratitude’ are of a thankfulness of something found from that awareness…”

what results, for me, when i combine awareness and gratitude, with an image, is a special form of inspiration

these are unprofessional level photographs, good i think, but not “expert” -

the images are from those i take going out and about in my daily life

i may have opportunities to see more, but for now, this is good

i enjoy applying an awareness of being grateful, to an image i have found, and seeing what words that inspires in me -

it’s a process, and the process itself, even when frustrating, is inspiring…

Shameless Requests

Reviews

if you are able and would like to, please leave a constructive review on the amazon listing page for “everyday inspirations – photopoems vol 1″

always be honest, and if you can say what or why you liked or even disliked the work, or a portion of it, please say so

the constructive part is important to me ;-)

*

Likes

amazon has a “liked” button at the top of each listing

“if” and only if you liked the selection after download, please consider clicking the “liked” button for me

thank you so much ;-)

*

Feedback

these particular feedbacks, i’m beginning to learn, regarding my listings on amazon, can be very helpful

i woke this morning knowing i needed to make these requests, so some smarter part of me inside knew this would be good to add to this posting

thanks again, i appreciate it!

***

Yoga

Perspective-Fits

one of my most favorite beliefs, is that all these things i do, are only special in that they are unique from me -

and that anyone, any-one can do their own versions of words and images and word-images

the great comforting contradiction in yoga, and in most of the world’s philosophies i think, is how unique we each are, in our oneness…

if true, if really true, we each have unique perspectives we can share that still should align with some degree of understanding, compassion, and acceptance, with everyone else

some “fits” will be more comfortable than other fits, of course ;-)

*

Curvy Yoga

an article i saw this week, from anna guest-jelley, the lady who runs the site curvyyoga, in describing “what enough looks like” made we wonder, in a good way ;-)

she evolved and defined the answer as,

“enough is a moving target..when someone tells you what enough is, that’s the time to go inside and figure out what is actually true for you.”

i suggested, in the comments, that “enough” is akin to the yogic idea of “playing your edge

and wondered if both the creative response of the artist creating a poem or picture, and the reader’s response to that creative result, is sorta like that -

for example, i image a part of my world with my camera, then verse that image with words, and finally share it with others -

essentially, i am saying, this is enough, for me -

i get this, this inspires me -

and it may you, too!

but isn’t that, then, the signal, the opportunity, the thing i’ve “really” shared? a spark of inspiration we give each other, to enable us to “go inside and figure out what is actually true for you” ?

doesn’t mean we won’t both say, oh yea! that’s beautiful, and we both love it -

i mean, i want that, to share something more than just myself feels…

but that doesn’t mean you can’t or shouldn’t go inside yourself, and see what else you might find in you -

why not? ;-)

***

Final Thoughts

Adan Lerma

the poems and pictures in this small book, are one of my most enjoyable discovery exercises

i love finding images i really like and i love finding the right words to fit those images

these photopoems are my visibly seen process of finding inspirations -

in my everyday…

Yoga Injuries – An Article Recap Pointer, via YogaDork

***

Intro

Pros & Cons

i won’t rehash all the various pros and cons of : what kinds of injuries can happen during yoga, why they might happen, when they might happen, if being injured during yoga means it is or isn’t yoga

but i will say i’m really glad people are talking and debating and thinking about it

i’ve had friends and students from texas to vermont, ok, well, from texas and vermont ;-) contact me or tell me they’ve been “in discussion” with their teacher or class about injuries during yoga

so i think that’s great!

The Article

what this article is for, is to point the reader to the best most comprehensive article listing i’ve come across so far

i’ve read “some” of these, and know “some” of the folk involved, digitally anyways ;-)

so yogadork in nyc does a pretty good online job of poking fun of yoga yet providing pretty dependable information to chew on

her article, appropriately named, after a series of like articles from her helped stir the pot the ny times lit a fire under (meaning this issue was always here, just needed heating up), is :

“Complete and Exhaustive Guide: Yoga Community Responds to NYT ‘How Yoga Can Wreck Your Body’”

from this article you can reach a very very wide gamut of opinions and thoughts

folk i’m familiar with and can recommend from my perspective, include jill miller and nancy alder

sites i’m familiar with i’d trust to listen to with an open ear include yoga journal, the kripalu center, recovering yogi, and yoga tune up (the latter also run by jill miller)

***

Listening to Yourself for Guidance

Intro

easily the best and most reachable thing for any one of us to do regarding what to do or not do during yoga to prevent injuries and maximize our experience

ok, now, have said that…

i’m gonna say the following, with it meant mostly for seniors like myself, but also anyone of any age who finds things in what i’ll say that appeals to them – not “too” unlikely, we oldsters were youngsters once ;-)

*

The Problem With “Listening” to Ourselves

i know that i have “listened” to the wisdom in my body many a time in the past, and got hurt

I know that many people my age have the same lingering doubt about fully trusting themselves, i hear it often in class, over coffee, at the check-out line :

“i figured i could do blah-blah-blah, but i guess (hahaha) i really couldn’t (oohhh, that hurts)”

fully trusting the wisdom in our bodies presumes we know what and how to hear what’s being said, and translate it properly through over half a dozen decades of mis-steps, warnings from others, injuries, and just plain natural accidents

we know we don’t know what condition our condition is in, to paraphrase an old song from “the day” -

how strong or what weak points our spine has -

which joints have lost more mass than we’d realized -

how our muscles has slowed their response time -

how knowing we know more and yet don’t know enough means we’re gonna take longer making decisions which might mean not moving that mis-aligned knee back in place quick enough

there’s some of the above i didn’t even know i needed to know before i got my fitness certifications

*

Learning What to Listen For

so i’m not saying not to listen to oneself, one’s personal wisdom, the wisdom nature has ingrained in each of our bodies, or, that it’s not possible to have that kind of wisdom available to us

it is, it’s there, we do have it in us, from birth and before

i truly believe that

but it’s not a turnkey listening experience

we get a lot of static and variant messages as we grow up, as we raise our children, as we continue to age

the trick is to learn what to listen for

and for me, if i’m gonna listen to my body, i need more information about my body

how does it talk to me? when is it serious and when is it playing with me, teasing me to see if i’ve got some gumption?

how do i do this without breaking the message machine, my body?

the trick then becomes how to learn to know what to listen for

folks, things like the article above from yoga-dork, with avenues of offered wisdom, is one route

finding teachers that’ll answer questions in a way you trust that your experience then validates as right for you

doing your own research: reading, dvds, classes – there’s tons of stuff

i’ll tell you right now, i’m not a real dumb person, and i’m interested in my health, and like the idea of developing myself into a better person (that’s the spiritual part ;-) ) – and it’s been a tough go

i’m fortunate i have a wife who’s also interested in all this (actually she got me started on learning more through fitness workshops etc)

you can do it alone, but you don’t have to…

*

Nice Thing ‘Bout Getting Old(er)

this is a free ebook i put together organizing some of the article i’ve written on this site about fitness, yoga, aging, and creativity

it’s meant to be a nibble-at-it, reference, enjoy-the-poems collection that hopefully leads you to other learnings, your own things to learn, about you

there’s no affiliate links in it, i won’t know you got it unless you tell me, and i don’t offer it on my website

it’s free at at least three online sites right now

Final Thoughts

Adan Lerma

i’m enjoying doing fitness and yoga classes with my wife, mostly for seniors -

but also for most anyone who’s de-conditioned, i know what that’s like ;-)

and we’ve surprised a few fairly fit classes we subbed at with what we brought to their fitness class they hadn’t expected, especially in terms of awareness and fitness information

i’m also enjoying doing my photography, and writing my poetry

find what you like to do to be and stay more fit

discover things you like to do

and you’ll be a long way toward listening to your own wisdom, from your body and your soul ;-)

Intro

New, Limited Time FREE Offer

Thursday, January 12 through Monday January 16, 2012

not initially meant to be a companion to the “a month of mornings” series, “everyday gratitude vol 1″ can be enjoyed stand-alone, on its own merits and value -

yet, one i create each morning (or so) while the other is based on reflection late in the afternoon or early evening

but, for now, the two are tied, if nothing else, by their mutually exclusive offering through amazon books, by the initiating free-day offer (at least as long amazon allows this option to authors participating in their Select program), and by their alternating release pattern

this developing pattern, of one being released near the end of the month (“a month of mornings”) and the other about mid-month (“everyday gratitude”) is itself, like the poems themselves, an experiment -

a way of myself finding how to handle this creative project

it will probably continue to be interesting ;-)

*

Small Gratitudes Make the Larger Gratitude

not that i don’t believe that an over-whelming gratitude can or should or could happen, to myself or anyone else -

i do

it’s that those of the kind, i’ve found, for me, i can’t predict or plan on…

what i can do, and is within my power, to try at least, is finding the small thing in my day i can honestly, cleanly, purely, say i am grateful for -

a breath, a sensation, a feeling, a thought, a memory, an idea, an intuition, a connection

something

even an image or sound, something that means something to me that reminds me to either be grateful, or realize i already am…

that’s what these poems are about

“A Month of Mornings” – “Everyday Gratitude”

if the poems in “a month of mornings” are of awareness -

the poems of “everyday gratitude” are of a thankfulness of something found from that awareness…

it would be silly for me to even try to determine which is more relevant or important, especially for myself

one feeds the other, over and over, and are probably, i’m guessing, are part and parcel as they say, of each other

my hope is i can continue to feel that feedback loop…

***

Yoga

Oneness

awareness is, i believe, yoga’s prime and greatest gift to us

and gratitude, i sense, is the strongest gift we can give back, in awareness

intuitively, meaning understood gestalt-ly without need of details, i can see they are of a whole

at this point, the only details i feel a need to articulate, are the day-to-day detail of living that intuition

yet, knowing me, and also believing that the mind is just as much a part of our oneness as our feelings heart and intuitions, i don’t preclude that, when it’s right, i’ll try and pick apart the layers to identify those details ;-)

those details are there, i’m just not sure i can see, or understand, those, just yet ;-)

*

Opening a View of Gratitude

i do have an article i wrote last year, speaking to the idea of using visualization and the yogic pose movement of a heart opener, to tap into developing our individual sense of gratitude -

which i followed up with a post on my photography thinking for the photo imagery i used in the article above

and a fun fitness exercise for heart openers with elastic bands gave me another idea

those were fun, felt creative, and involved awareness and gratitude -

but these poems in this series, are a descriptive attempt…

of sensing and grasping my own gratitude itself…

opening my own views of my gratitude…

i share them with the sincere hope that each person will seek and find their own sources and sensations of gratitude in their own every day lives

Do Older People Decide Things More Slowly?

Nice Thing 'Bout Getting Old(er) - Articles, Reviews, Creativity

Do Older People Decide Things More Slowly?

Pictured, free eBook, “Nice Thing ‘Bout Getting Old(er)”

“a beginner’s view : the intent of this blog is to incrementally build a body of thought that works toward integrating various topics, yoga, fitness, and the arts – it’s a process…”

do older people decide things more slowly?

***

Intro

i came across this article, “Who are you calling slow? 70-year-olds can be trained to make accurate decisions as quickly as younger generations” -

and thought, this is another piece of a growing puzzle-image that says, aging doesn’t have to be as bad as most of us have been taught it has to be…

yes, we are aging -

from the moment we’re born -

though, of course, the growth curve when we’re young, certainly out-weighs most sense of aging, at least in the typical sense ;-)

but i think, that’s part of my point, in so many of my articles and posts and free ebook, aging is simply the natural process of changing, almost morphing, into maturation

***

“Who are you calling slow? 70-year-olds can be trained to make accurate decisions as quickly as younger generations”

Slow Deciding Not Inherent

the basic premise in the article, i believe, is, older folk are not necessarily slower in making decisions, but have learned to weigh more variable before making a decision…

makes sense ;-)

the article also says, “They [ seniors ] can have reactions as fast as 25-year-olds, a study reveals”

this, then, is a great article pointing out an extremely important piece of information, not only for people already seniors, but anyone planning on aging ;-)

*

Fear of Making a Mistake

embedded in this idea, of weigh the variables in a decision more deliberately, i think, is also a learned fear of making a mistake, especially a big mistake

a harmful mistake -

experience does teach us many things, usually ;-)

so, it seems, on my part, that this caution, and weighing of factors to make a decision, may be warranted at times…

*

Caution

but what is interesting is, because this well-honored caution may be being applied “too” broadly in our daily activities, we older folk may be taking longer than we “need” to decide “some” things

so, while it is wonderful, and terribly important, to realize, recognize, and accept, that we, as seniors, can and must make some decisions more quickly -

i do believe the factor not mentioned or addressed in the article is: some things maybe should be given more time and attention before deciding

*

Deciding Too Quickly Isn’t Always a Virtue

there are many instances where quick action, quick decisions, are not only useful, but also practical – some vital and some mundane : helping someone in dire need, or what type of drink to have with lunch -

yet, the notion, that some things should be given the time needed to be decided, but not given, is not addressed in the article -

and in all fairness, isn’t addressed, in most discussions about slow decision-making, especially by us seniors ourselves

what about being honked by the car behind us when the light is red, we can turn right, but we’re making sure another car isn’t turning in our path? -

and we know that happens once a day at least!  we start to go out into the intersection, and someone darts out and crosses the path we would’ve taken…

what about being pushed by someone behind us in the grocery store when we’re looking for an item, and the person behind us thinks they know where they are heading and also thinks we’re going too slow down the aisle?

and why is it the judgement of what is too fast or too slow, is usually against the person whose speed is different from one’s own?

and going back to the quick decision about what drink to have at lunch, what about  the initial rushing itself, to gobble up food that’s convenient, and quick, but not good for us?

i certainly recall making some decisions rather quickly when i was younger (even last week!) that cost me…

and maybe there’s an embedded-ness in our culture, where we are subconsciously mimicking machines and technology that are really pre-set to operate at full speed and efficiency, without thinking, and shouldn’t even be emulated by the decision-making process?

*

Balance

ultimately, i believe, a balance, and a juggling of judgment calls about what needs hurrying, and what doesn’t, is what’s needed, by all of us, young and old(er)

what this article, and the study it refers to does do though, is help remove the idea, especially among older people themselves, people like me, that my decisions will necessarily be slower now, as a factor of simply being physically older

that’s extremely encouraging to me ;-)

***

More Reading

it was interesting, in seeing what other articles like this i might find, i found so many!

at the end of this post i’ve placed a number that seem worth seeing and reviewing

many seem to review the same material as this first article i’d found

***

Nice Thing ‘Bout Getting Old(er)

nice thing ’bout getting old(er)” is a free ebook, of over a dozen postings from my blog here, organized into information i’ve been learning about aging, fitness, yoga, and creativity…

it’s meant to be referred to, and read here and there, nibbled at -

although the poems can be read straight through ;-)

***

Final Thoughts

Adan Lerma

keeping active is one of the best ways to keep oneself happy and fit

my activity of choice is yoga, but i also jazzercise with my wife, write poetry, do photography, and paint

i would only encourage you to explore and find those things that are fun for you ;-)

Intro

this is a follow-up on my previous post, when i first made “nice thing ’bout getting old(er)” free

***

Decision to Keep Available as Free

i had already decided that, for the foreseeable future, i would keep “nice thing ’bout getting old(er)” available free as an ebook

recently, all three of my current ebook outlets have re-priced my offering as desired, to a FREE download

the decision to keep this ebook priced as Free involves several things :

  • a desire to have more people see the information inside, which, though available on this site, is more tightly organized, being that it represent only 14-15 articles out of over 200 posts on my blog
  • the belief that the information is important enough to share more easily by being offered for free
  • the hope people will then visit my website for further information, and continue to move toward keeping or making themselves healthy, and enjoying their lives more
  • exposure of my more related creative work in verse and images, that may appeal to that person for purchase or referral
  • the ability to, as i have done with the currently available 2nd edition, enhance the material included with new or improved information
  • and finally, and actually one of my more important and “swaying” reasons to myself : to have an easily available format for people in our classes to access the type of information we try to share and demonstrate in class
below is a review of the currently available online outlets for “nice thing ’bout getting old(er)”

***

Review of Available Outlets

New Yoga-Adan Blog Category

this is now the fourth of what’s become a saga-series in creating and promoting a free ebook offer ;-)

last post, i decided it had earned its own category listing ;-)  the “free ebook” series!

that way, when i do have news on my free ebook, it’ll be easier to find

*

Amazon Books

i’m not familiar with the figures on which source gets the most ebook traffic, i’m getting interesting results on the other outlets below -

but in regard to my own work, and what i have to offer, which are ebooks on poetry, photography, aging and being a young senior ;-) and integrating those interests in what i present to people -

then amazon books has the most reach for me at this time

i’m still surprised when someone says they don’t have an account with amazon, but there’s no doubt as to their ability to show and sell my work to large numbers of people

my amazon books author’s page is a good place to see what i have available there

also, as always, my site’s “my ebooks” page lists new titles and outlets as they develop

amazon books listing

*

Google Books

google is not at this time considered as big a player as amazon or some of the other well-known ebook outlets, but it does provide opportunity for new authors

google books offers one’s ebooks to partners all over the world, which is good

however, the price one sets for one’s books, can be adjusted by agreement of google and their partners, without notice to the author – so that’s an issue to be aware of

both epub and pdf formats of one’s ebooks can be made available, which doesn’t include the kindle i believe, but does many if not most of the other readers on the market

though google doesn’t offer a dedicated author’s page, ala amazon, in writing with one of their team members, they said my author search page on google could be used for the same purpose, until other features are developed

so google is definitely not up to amazon’s finely honed author tools at this time, but we are talking about the company we not only use for tons of searching, but whose browser has just surpassed ie as the world’s browser of choice!

google books listing

*

Smashwords

smashwords, in contrast to both google and amazon, offers multi-format choices for the author to offer his or her work, and for the buyer to choose from

they also, like google, will allow an author to price their particular work for free

that’s a huge benefit

also, smashwords, being a distributor that also offers to sell one’s ebooks on the smashwords site, can place qualifying ebooks in other, major, outlets, like apple, barnes & noble, sony, & kobo

however, each submission must be in a particular format, with fairly restrictive formatting requirements – this is not a deal killer, entirely -

it can mean though, one’s ebook may have to “look” slightly different from intended

and, one may have to reformat one’s ebook over and over til acceptable to be distributed to apple, barnes & noble, kobo, and others – or one can pay someone to prepare the formatting

i myself am struggling with the “qualifying” conversion to have work sent to those major outlets mentioned above, though “nice thing ’bout getting old(er)” is available for free, in all the various formats available, directly from smashwords

it’s available in the following formats :

  • html (online reading)
  • Kindle (mobi format)
  • epub (most of the above well-known vendors)
  • PDF (portable document format)
  • RTF (rich text format)
  • LRF (older sony models)
  • Palm Doc
  • Plain Text

that’s impressive ;-)

smashwords listing

*

Comparison Summary

so there are pluses and minuses dealing with either of the choices above, both for the author and the buyer

for the buyer, or in this case, person seeking the free download, i would suppose access and reader are most important

most any of the outlets are gonna want the person to register, though all are free to register i believe

so format is important

also a person should consider that ereader apps exist that can used on almost any phone, tablet, and computer

a google search turns up lots and lots of choices

so this seems to be more a case of choice, and happy hunting ;-)

*

Future Outlets

it is possible that my ebooks will be available through apple’s ibookstore, or barnes & nobles’ ebook store, but is not imminently in the works

the “my ebooks” page on this site will list new information as available

i anticipate this will happen, but don’t have a timeline right now

please check back, or sign up for our newsletter

thanks so much ;-)

*

My Website

right now, i don’t foresee placing any of my ebooks for sale or download on my site

circumstances would need to change significantly for me to go that route

i’m not against it, more so that i have so much content still needing organizing, digitizing, and formatting into ebook form, that i have no time to deal with that right now -

add new work i’d like to concentrate on, and  it’s just easier and better for me to be able to offer my ebooks through the above outlets

not to mention the additional visibility they afford ;-)

***

Final Thoughts

Adan Lerma

meanwhile ;-) though all my online work is copyrighted, it is up for people to see and read, and, like my wife and myself, hopefully keep learning from -

yes, we learn from our own work, as we practice it, and see how it works, for us too ;-)

thanks so much! i hope you’ll continue visiting the site ;-)

Review of Results

Intro

overall, i’m pleased ;-)

are there still exclusivity concerns? yes, of course

are there still other possible negative unknowns? ditto

but, from my point of view, where i am right now, i’m pleased ;-)

*

Initial Results

010212 Amazon Seller List

010212 Amazon Seller List

hundreds of copies of “a month of mornings vol 1″ were downloaded to be sampled and hopefully enjoyed for free

i’m well aware that, for many authors even, this figure is insignificant, but we start from where we start, or we don’t start!

these numbers represent a nice jump in the number of “new” people sampling my work, particularly my poetry

the last few days, my little volume hit the top 10, #8 i believe, on amazon’s top 100 list of free ebooks!

downloads even happened in england and germany, nice!

in addition, i also saw an increase in actual sales of my other work

thank you so very much!

i appreciate every one who downloaded or thought about downloading “a month of mornings vol 1″ ;-) and hope you enjoyed reading the short series ;-)

*

Future Volumes of  ”A Month of Mornings”

these poems began as simply poems for myself, self-reflections in the morning, and they carry that sense of intimacy in them i believe, which surprised even me somewhat

see what practice can get you? ;-)

so “more material” was and is already in the works

one thing i did not want to do to myself at this point, was “require” myself to create a month’s worth of morning poems each month, that there could be an organic flow, ie, if i needed to skip a morning, i could

so the “schedule” for future releases is “roughly” monthly

but you know i’ll be posting an article about it ;-)

and tweeting, and facebook-ing!

and my newsletter! ;-)

***

Yoga

sharing is such a huge part of participating in a feeling of oneness i believe -

but so is reciprocity, and an exchange, as each as able, to others

so offering affordable ebooks is, for me, fair and right

in addition, i’ve decided to maintain my much larger ebook, “nice thing ’bout getting old(er)” as free for the foreseeable future, and will post an update on that offer later this week

this latter work has a large number of articles from this site, organized into topics, such as aging, fitness, and creativity

i’m also considering, in each future edition, i’ve just recently uploaded the 2nd edition, adding something new i think will be of value and interest to, as i like to say -

“for anyone who’s a senior, or planning on aging” ;-)

dVersePoet Prompt : OpenLinkNight – Week 25, Did Someone Mention Charles Bukowski?

**

if the words endure, they do so because they link the links -

***

Intro, Charles Bukowski, and Me

the guys and gals over at dversepoets have these open mike invitations, where one can create poems to particular prompts or themes

i’ve tried my hand with a few and like their essay-prefaced prompt calls

this particular invite is an open link night, so anything goes (i think) ;-)

brian, who helps run (runs?) the site, wrote the post-new-year new year’s post, and included a quote from charles bukowski

so i took my cue from that inclusion and did my best hispanic-american young-senior mostly-mild-life impression of who, if you’ve read anything of bukowski’s, was probably closer to what my initial immigrant ancestors’ lives were like, rough ready persistent and, eventually,  would’ve been eminently readable

and for those who do know charles bukowski’s readings, no this is nowhere near, close to, or pretending-ly as “authentic-rough” as he was ;-)

this is just me playing him on the internet -

on a blog ;-)

*

brian leaves a much better “taste” of bukowski on his site ;-) with his poem

enjoy!

***

Homage to Charles Bukowski

On the Third Day of a New Year

I sat on the glass

of opportunity

til it cracked.

I didn’t want

a glass of it

to spill & stain

my chest.

I don’t want to

sip & think fine

thoughts.

I wanna

guzzle the mouth of

steins set like barrels.

Those aren’t opportunities.

That’s life.

Now buy me a drink.

Yoga

so much emphasis in yoga is on oneness, i sometimes forget that inclusiveness must not only recognize variety and diversity, but celebrate it

though, in all honesty, i only forget, i feel, for moments ;-)

the teeming-ness of life in our what-seems so homogenous increasingly-global lives, is an easy reminder…

try getting all your friends or family, or your social-media circle of friends to “really” agree on something, you’ll see what i mean (as if you don’t know this already!)

diversity, i believe, in our oneness, is part of what drove charles bukowski

he couldn’t live otherwise than how he was -

yet, it seems to me, he not so much wanted “in” - as felt he already was in -

and why didn’t other people see that ;-)

that’s the way i think we are today in our world today -

we’re already one, but don’t always believe it…

*

Final Thoughts

happy  new new-year’s day-3 everyone!

soon we’ll be one week in, and no going back ;-)

happy new year everyone!

the idea of the poems is, yes, new years is a new beginning, but also has continuity

there seemed, all of a sudden, so many ways i could express this, but they each led to differing modes of image-expression and line-usage, and i had to make a choice

kinda like at new years ;-)

here’s wishing all the best to all of us!

Joe Konrath, Resolutions for Writers 2006-2012

whether you’re interested in writing, or the sudden evolution into ebooks with ereaders the last few years, this is fascinating reading from a writer’s writer

“Every December I do a post about resolutions for writers, and every year I add more of them” begins this years new years resolution post from joe konrath

joe is a self-described genre fiction writer

the resolutions posted, from 2006 through the newest one for 2012, are as enthralling as a work of fiction, yet totally true “and” provide a blow-by-blow historical account of the changes in the publishing industry, from a writer’s pov

dVersepoets New Year’s Post, “Poetics – Endings & EBeginnings”

thought i should be used to it by now, i continue to be amazed at the quality of essay prefacing the prompt for a particular theme created by a working poet from dversepoets

from the essay, by Mark Kerstetter

“Do you, at the end of the year, think about the past or the future?…Perhaps…the present moment is all that we ever have, and it is the poet’s province to memorialize this place: always here, and always unique…we walk forward with eyes in the backs of our heads….”

included in the essay is a beauty of a photo, a poem from conrad aiken, and a youtube audio with the vinyl cover of a young sinatra (as if frank was ever old ;-) )

*

Yoga

so many times i forget, that all my turns and twists and new beginnings, no matter how disparate, end up linked chapters in the larger book that’s my life

everything i’ve done colors everything i think and feel, the mix and mixes mixing like air currents finding where their boundaries dissolve and blend merging into something new, for another while

i find that kinda comforting, though i thought, when first thinking this, i wouldn’t

that i’d resent the losing of the moment remembered -

my moments are still moments, i realize, they just keep connecting to other moments, making up the larger moment that’s the living of my life

i wonder, if that’s, sorta at least, how my one life, becomes one…

*

Final Thoughts

happy new years everyone ;-)

Intro

New Limited Time FREE Offer

December 29, 2011 thru Monday, January 02, 2012

it’s been quite a journey getting to the point where i could fit a work of mine into amazon’s new lending program, and qualify for their (up to) five days of free offering of the participating author’s work on amazon

a month of mornings, vol 1” is a brand new work, that eliminates several problems i had in selecting one of my other already existing works

Review of Previous Attempt

though i have over a dozen ebooks now available, all had some to substantial portions previewed or posted on this site

one of my most important goals in having this website, is for sharing my still very-much-growing awareness of how yoga fitness and the arts integrate -

my first attempt, with “nice thing ’bout getting old(er)” itself is a compilation, and would have meant disrupting too much of my current site

and even those ebooks with minimal work featured on my site, such as poetry books like “poems for lovers loving & being loved” would have meant removing those few selections already posted

because i link between my differing posts, to show continuity, and suggest connections (especially to myself ;-) ) removing “one” work, would have meant numerous busted links and made other articles on my site less effective, and probably very  annoying ;-)

Solution

the solution came about as an awareness recognized of an on-going opportunity

i’m always starting and experimenting with various projects, visual written and even with the yoga classes my wife and i teach

so, among several projects i’m “playing” with, the way one plays with one’s edge in yoga, finding and testing the boundaries of comfort and newness, was one little, almost innocent, tiny endeavor, a poem a day in the morning ;-)

written purely from my point of view, as a person, as a texan newly in vermont, as a young senior, waking each morning, and finding how the day will be for me in those beginning waking minutes

it’s been interesting ;-)

***

Yoga

Oneness

so much so often, in yoga, attention is focussed on negating the outer world, seeing it as transitory, and therefore an illusion, not to be believed in, in contrast to one’s spiritual self, which endures and persists as one with the universe

i like that, that appeals to me, but…

i’ve never believed it could be possible, in a truly “at one” world, that what we experience, what we are, in our daily lives, is not meant to be assimilated and carried with that already immortal part of us, back to, and no disrespect meant, back to whatever it is we go back to

i believe in “it” but don’t really “know” what it is -

i can only feel it and sense it, i think ;-)

Oneness and Months of Mornings

my belief, and amazing to me everyday, is i am who i am, as a spiritual being -

and i am all that i am every moment of every day…

*

the person i am, who wakes each morning, is the same person i remember being since a small child -

i may or may not have approved of that person, myself, any individual morning when i woke, at times happy with myself, at times disappointed in myself, but i knew it was me…

***

Final Thoughts

Adan Lerma

these poems, are the story to myself of myself in my many wakings ;-)

Playfulness in an Ageless Christmas – Original Inspirational Poetry

25 Dec

Adan LermaPlayfulness in an Ageless Christmas – Original Inspirational Poetry.  Also linked to dVersepoet’s dVerse Christmas poem under the tree posting.

“a beginner’s view : the intent of this blog is to incrementally build a body of thought that works toward integrating various topics, yoga, fitness, and the arts – it’s a process…”

playfulness in an ageless christmas – original inspirational poetry

**

if the words endure, they do so because they link the links -

***

Intro

it’s hard to imagine christmas without a vision of a child…

and it’s almost impossible for me to see a child without seeing its playfulness -

and i cannot believe that i, myself, looking back on my own memories of myself, and seeing all the new children bounding now about, that i no longer have that playfulness within me, even if somewhat changed ;-)

i’ve begun to think that, it is the “perceived” loss of our own playfulness, that leads to the two paths of thought i’ve written about, below the poem : celebrity worship, and the younger/older is-wiser side-road

***

Playfulness in an Ageless Christmas

when we were children

sparkles lit upon

all we’d

see

our supple bones

soft-headed fast-growing

gave a playfulness to our lives

bouncing! eager -

from

toy to toy - joy to joy!

life’s promise

radiated

fragrant teas and herbs from

within our hearts

our minds at one with what we felt

and now..that we are older

and our winters have

sometimes

forgotten how long the springs

remain so fertile within us

our bones

now hard-headed slow-growing

less supple

yet

stronger…

give a calmness..to our play

we know

we will smile again and taste

the simple fun of finding

there is always

someone

new

being born

bearing bones of cartilage

and eager to find the feeling of finding

fun

with someone just like us.

Ben Stein

a friend of ours in san antonio, who we met when we lived in galveston, sent me an email ecstatic about something ben stein had said…

i couldn’t find the email, which i’m sure i’ve labeled and stored somewhere safe ;-) but a google search found me numerous references to his christmas thoughts

there were several, all good, but evidently it was one he said a few years ago on the cbs sunday morning show, that our friend in san antonio sent us

one of my favorite lines in that piece is,

“where did the idea come from that we should worship celebrities and we aren’t allowed to worship God as we understand Him?”

*

only thing i’d disagree with him on, is, “I guess that’s a sign that I’m getting old…” -

something some of my fellow old(er) friends are too quick to agree with at times, i think

and, in context, is actually kinda funny when ben stein said it, but…

it’s obvious, from the idealism i grew up with in the 60s, and the idealism we see now in the “occupied” camps around the world, (and disregarding the merits of the idealism in each instance) that celebrity worship, in financial circles as much as in the entertainment world, is not something repellent to the older crowd alone…

playfulness, in the sense of give and take, might here be useful for all of us

*

Yoga

and to be fair, celebrity worship is equally rampant within the yogic community

not too surprising, since yoga, despite claims to the contrary, is still a human attempt to attempt the impossible but necessary -

to make sense of our selves and the world we live in -

…whether 5000 years ago, during british imperialism, or in a modern yoga studio complete with organic mats, certified music, imported incense, and buy-local water and snacks

*

Final Thoughts

this “thinking” then that a view is held or not held because we are older, or because we aren’t older, is simply the same view chasing itself across our years -

it is a celebrity worship of our own years alone…

time is playing with us, teasing us

*

thus, as in this poem, the child is born aching for reciprocal play from those older than itself, and those of us now older, yearn with gratitude of remembrance and welcome, at the sight of (most) little ones ;-)

the spirit of christmas is ageless -

a timeless, giving spirit -

carrying its playfulness to us….

namaste´- con dios – god be with you

Winter

being yesterday was the first full day of winter, thought it was probably time for me to replace my fall foliage leaves image

this is an image of my first snow fall here in burlington, vermont -

i got lucky ;-)

***

Red Berries with Snow

*

Original Image

the original is quite a picture, used it for my post, “First Snow – Original Inspirational & Places Poetry & Video

i guess i should qualify “quite a picture” as quite a picture for me ;-) since i haven’t since much snow in my life time ;-)

but i do really like the contrasts and patterns

*

Text Tool in Photoshop

besides the obvious cropping, and a very tiny bit of lighting adjustment, the major thing i did was play with the “yoga-adan” text on the image

once i’d chosen the font size, placement, and color, playing with the text adjustment options was kinda fun

clicking on the shadow box effect brings up all kinds of adjustment options, lengthening the shadow, the shadow color (which decided i liked red rather than black), and the type of color overlay

from there, other adjustments included textures and gradients and such, none of which i used

i did experiment with the stroke option, liked the inside stroke effect, but eventually opted for adding a bit of the outer glow effect, with a reduced opacity

*

Border

a reduced fill on the color intensity brought the right glow-ish pink i liked to the border

*

i hope ya’ll enjoy the current winter header, and time will tell if it’ll hold all winter, or other enticing images prod me to do another ;-)

happy holidays everyone!

Happy Baby Pose (Ananda Balasana) – Original Yoga Poetry

23 Dec

Adan LermaHappy Baby Pose (Ananda Balasana) – Original Yoga Poetry.  Linked to prompt from dVersepoets

“a beginner’s view : the intent of this blog is to incrementally build a body of thought that works toward integrating various topics, yoga, fitness, and the arts – it’s a process…”

happy baby pose (ananda balasana) – original yoga poetry

**

if the words endure, they do so because they link the links -

***

Intro

the dVersepoets has provided another of their continuing series of prompts, this time on “contrast”

as usual, the poet providing the prompt, this time, victoria c. slotto, provides an interesting essay, with numerous visual and written examples of the use and presentation of contrasts

*

The Prompt

almost immediately, though the essay from dversepoets mentions art and texture, things i personally relish, an image from a poem i was working on came to mind – “happy baby pose

the contrasts i felt thinking of this image, involved the incredible softness of a baby, their delicate expressions -

and yet the immense strength and growth of bones and muscles happening at the same time, which allows us to first crawl, then walk

*

Yoga

the lecture sheila and i attend at the university of vermont recently, actually spoke to the necessity of a child developing its core muscles, to even being able to crawl, much less walk

and here we are, as adults, in fitness and yoga classes, needing to be reminded, made aware of, and recapture, the sense of strength and stability we gained when we first developed those core muscles -

when we were happy babies ;-)

namaste´- con dios – god be with you

***

Happy Baby Pose – Ananda Balasana

happy baby pose

is a pose of contrasts

strength

in playfulness

legs curled, hands securely clasped

on searching feet

airborne

the relaxed back resting

on first mother, earth

the core

felt, and tightened, made aware

ready

for movement when feet and hands

roll

the back to the sky and the heart back

to the earth

it is time to crawl

explore

such a happy baby…

one would think that deciding, then giving away one of one’s eBook projects, all rights intact of course ;-) , would not be that hard!

and maybe other projects like this, short or long-term in offer, might not be

but i think this is it for me, at least in terms of totally free ;-)

nevertheless, i’ve accomplished what i wanted

and needed : a quality promo piece

***

The Process

New Yoga-Adan Blog Category

so here we are, the fourth of what’s become a saga-series in creating and promoting a free ebook offer

i’ve decided it has earned its own category listing ;-)

this is now part of the “free ebook” series!

that way, when i do have news on my free ebook, it’ll be easier to find

*

Google Books

google’s “manage ebooks” tabs are fairly easy to work with, so changing the price for “nice thing ’bout getting old(er)” was pretty easy

as was uploading the newer versions, epub and pdf, with the available ebook titles featured at the rear of the book, with a link to my ebook page on my site with current updated info

i input the price change info this morning, and it appears it is now set to free (late afternoon), not bad!

the version i saw notated is for tablets and ipad, with, i’m guessing, the ereader (flowing text) version still processing

google does offer either a pdf or epub version an author can choose to format and sell from

though google doesn’t offer a dedicated author’s page, ala amazon, in writing with one of their team members, they said my author search page on google could be used for the same purpose, until other features are developed

so google is definitely not up to amazon’s finely honed author tools at this time, but we are talking about the company we not only use for tons of searching, but whose browser has just surpassed ie as the world’s browser of choice!

*

Smashwords

now i took on the more challenging venue

more challenging for me, because the upload format required (currently) is in word doc

biting the bullet, i read through the many word doc format errors needing correcting for my ebook submission to be eligible for distribution to apple, barnes & noble, kobo, sony, etc

font size max of 18, no tabbing, links or images that didn’t “translate” from my epub or pages file to word, yuk ;-)

i finally, after a full day of work on it, got my file for “nice thing ’bout getting old(er)” error msg free, and could request a review for distribution to the above well-known vendors

either way, my free ebook is available from smashwords

anyone can go get one! ;-)

and, it’s available in the following formats :

  • html (online reading)
  • Kindle (mobi format)
  • epub (most of the above well-known vendors)
  • PDF (portable document format)
  • RTF (rich text format)
  • LRF (older sony models)
  • Palm Doc
  • Plain Text

that’s impressive

so please, tell your friends, download your own copy, and if you can, let me know what you think -

email me or post a comment here on this post

***

New Plan

For Me

nothing fancy, unless something weird happens, wait til after christmas, and post how things have gone (any downloads, problems, promising trends, etc)

keep digitizing my back content of poems and, eventually, stories and images

keep creating new work and mixing it into the older work

keep integrating my arts experience with what i see and feel in yoga and fitness

continue with a special new creative project i “may” be able to offer via amazon’s new program, we’ll see ;-)

*

Suggested Reading

i mentioned in my previous “free ebook download” posts, an article with great comments on this whole question of the pros and cons of amazon’s lending library program

other good reads i was able to follow from that article are articles from matthew iden and a lady named skellie -

both working writers, with interesting perspectives and info on writing

*

my own work, especially my now free ebook, “nice thing ’bout getting old(er)” runs the gamut from complex but thorough thought into a fitness or yoga or arts subject (or combining two or more) to simple sayings-poems

and of course all the imagery included is original, either from myself or my wife sheila

enjoy ;-)

***

Final Thoughts

Adan Lerma

giving thanks and being grateful and sharing are, it seems, as intertwined as my views and experience of yoga fitness and the arts

i shouldn’t be surprised should i? ;-)

*

how i managed through the process of finally finding a quality suitable way to present “nice thing ’bout getting old(er)” free, to the public, turns out to be how i manage to work through poses and aerobic routines and breathing exercises and create writings and images…

by being as aware as i can, by being open to creativity…

and by remembering it’s a process…
